Come down the rabbit hole with Genevieve Stokes! The 21-year-old singer-songwriter is one of alternative pop’s brightest stars. She garnered acclaim from the likes of Complex and Earmilk all while gaining 7 million streams independently after uploading songs to SoundCloud while in high school. After signing to Atlantic Records, Stokes released her critically acclaimed debut EP, Swimming Lessons, in 2021. The seven-song project carried a delicate balance of nostalgia and angst, translating her high school experience into a mature and evocative collection of songs.
Stokes opens up a new world of imagination with her forthcoming EP Catching Rabbits, a dreamy exploration of what it means to heal and unlock your inner child. Inspired by the likes of Regina Spektor and Fiona Apple, Stokes creates vivid, emotional and complex sonic tapestries that transport you to another world right along with her. Born and raised in Portland, Maine, Stokes’ hometown has had a massive effect on her music.
Storybook and fairy tale allusions seep through the lyrics and visuals of Catching Rabbits, a much-needed escape from the darkness she was clawing out of while writing it. She began struggling with her mental health after her first EP came out, and writing Catching Rabbits allowed Stokes to find the “vibrancy in life” again and reconnect with her childhood imagination.
Stokes, of course, grew up loving fairytales like Alice in Wonderland and especially loved the phrase “chasing rabbits.” She chose the title Catching Rabbits to flip the other phrase on its head and embody the idea of “chasing the impossible in life.” The EP opens with first single “Habits,” a whimsical exploration of the split light and darkness she was experiencing as the EP was being penned: the demise of a relationship juxtaposed with the beauty and promise of spring created an interesting dynamic in both Stokes’ reality and music.

this is literally beyond beautiful. i saw some tiktok comments from people claiming they were mad or disappointed in the full version of the song because it wasn’t extremely slow paced. Your songs produce such a distinct feel of uniqueness. It's so charming and lovely. Makes the scattered emotions of the world a little bit more whole.

It’s sad how much I relate to this because the person I am dating never really pays attention unless they need help with mental help but never wants to hang out or call. They never even listen when I talk about my feelings. The relationship feels one sided. I listen to this song all the time and it makes feel better. They never understand that I would do so much for them. I love them but idk if they actually love me back.

I used this song for my Grandma’s funeral. This song reminded me how my Grandma loved me and cared for me much. She have a kind, sweet, and a strong soul. She helped all of her relatives and let them stay in her house for 2 years with their kids. And she let her take care of them, fed them, and let them stayed and slept with my mom and my uncle. She had take care all of their children as it was her own. But when she was diagnosed with Stroke no one was there to helped her only my Mom and I, until her last 2 breath no one visited my Grandma. And I will never forgive them for what they did. The chorus reminds me of our memories, and her smile. We may not celebrate with her this new year’s eve but we will celebrate every year with her in our hearts. You will be always remembered and loved in our souls and hearts, Nanay. I miss you already, Nanay Tessie.

This is a great song period, I heard the sound on a video and expected something slow and sad but when listing to the actual song it's marvelous. It expresses raw emotion through simple words and notes and the chorus is stunningly beautiful. Expressing emotions in simple words that may take ages to write. I truly love this song and it's stuck in my head lmao it's emotional and sweet and I love it regardless of other peoples expectations.

I find this version reflects the lyrics more imo
i love the bubbly feel and then how it slows down during the chorus! i know everyone wanted it to be acoustic and slow paced, and i think a version like that would be great, but this is perfect as it is and i love it.
i am head over heels for this song and how the way it makes me feel. it provokes thoughts and corners of potential memories that i can only dream of. i love the subtle changes throughout the song and how the melody and lyrics are so different yet they coincide so beautifully.
