이번에 일본 크리스마스에는 안 쉬고 따로 쉬는 날이 있는 것 같은데 그거 보니까 각 나라 쉬는 날은 언제 있는지가 궁금해졌어요. 대표적으로 미국, 한국, 일본, 중국 아님 유럽쪽도 궁금해졌어여 ㅎㅎ
School uniforms always seem cute in theory, but it can also be very traumatizing for some. When I went to school in Japan I didn't want to wear skirts, bc I don't like showing my legs (also there were so many pervs on the trains trying to take upskirt-pictures), but I wasn't even allowed to wear tights EVER, not even in winter. So not only was I forced to show skin that I didn't want to show, I was also freezing my butt off in winter bc I wasn't allowed to wear pants either, the winter skirt is just slightly longer T_T It's really archaic in a way, bc although I like the idea behind uniforms (same clothing for ppl from all backgrounds, less bullying etc.), the way it's executed is often just really sexist and old-fashioned :( There were schools in other prefectures that had rules that girls had to wear white underwear under their skirts :/
Went to an American school we were forced dress code because they thought it would crack down on bullying however, as the years went on, the dress code got stricter and then we could only wear certain color pants and certain color colored shirts, but for females it was kind of embarrassing because they only options were white or black pants so if you ever accidentally hurt your period or your period it was kind of embarrassing
Korean school hours are so wild! 😮 And for what?? I think it’s impossible for the human brain to actually study that long lol
We don't have these kinds of academies like they do in Korea in Germany. What they offer instead in Germany is for example places students can go to do their home work (to help them focus or to help if they have questions) or you can have like a teacher that helps you with a certain topic. But I think the focus on these things is for the rather "weak" students or the ones who have a hard time focusing instead of the stronger students using these kinds of offers.
Same in Poland
Honestly, I think it’s better in the long run to show students why studying hard is important rather than a heavy handed, high performance approach. A very strict education system is useful when countries are industrializing, but when they’re developed it becomes a double edged sword.
Not to mention, the Korean school system’s costliness and misery it creates is probably at least 33% why birth rates are so low.

In Spain it really depends though. What the girl said is mostly true, but for example, teachers didn’t come to our room when I was in High School. In fact, we didn’t have A room for our class. We just shifted rooms every new period, as well as the teachers. No one had their room, not students nor teachers.
And the school schedule can also vary between different schools. For example, my High School started at 8:20 am and would have 6 different periods (6 classes) until 2:10 pm. Some days there was this 7th period and we had to stay until 3:10 pm. Other days we didn’t have that, so everyone hated the days that had that 7th period. In Spain, a normal time to have lunch is 2 pm, so everyone would eat after school, but the days you have to stay for the 7th period would always be horrible because you get home late and eat late. There is no time to eat at school, only a break from 11-11:30 am to eat something small, talk with friends or whatever.
Also, related to how you dress up, you really can do whatever. I’ve seen boys go with a swimsuit the first days of September, or girls basically wearing a super small top that almost looks like a bra. I think that teachers will only say something if it’s hyper exaggerated like only wearing underwear or if boys try to go to school without a shirt
Just wanted to add, there are some public schools and private schools in America that have elementary from K-6th, middle 7-8 (sometimes 7-9), and high school from 9-12 (sometimes 10-12). 🙂

고등학교때 여름방학, 겨울방학도 쉬는건 1~2주일 정도밖에 못쉬고 학교나와서 공부해야 했습니다 (반강제라 쓰고 강제라 읽는다 ㄸㄹㄹ)

지나가던 00인데요 소진님이 설명하신게 정확한데 아마 세대 차이거나 아닌가 싶네요 여름, 겨울 방학은 무조건 한달이상이였구 봄방학은 졸업과 종업시즌에 맞춰서 2주정도 됐어요. 찾아보니까 2000년대 초에는 한달이상이였는데 요즘은 3주정도 되더라구요

In Spain there is a canteen in public schools, but it is usually in primary school and they are paid for separately. In public high school, there is no canteen and students eat at home. When I was little at school we had a split shift, from 9 to 1 and from 2 to 4, and many of us ate at home (it was a small town and in five minutes walking you were home) but over time they realized that especially when The summer heat began in those afternoon hours, the students did not perform well, and the shift began.
High school times really differ in the US. I live in Georgia were Dave is from, but my HS there started at 7AM (but you're expected to be IN class at 6:50) and ended at 2:10PM; Lunch break was about 30 minutes). But in my other high school It started at 8:50 and ended at 2:15; Lunch Break was 1 hour long (my other high school was grade 8-12, since we didn't have middle school there)

We get to school at 9h. Recess. Around 10:20 (its been 20 years ahaha) we had snack for 20 minutes then recess for 30 minutes??? Maybe? (got switched in grade 3) at 11:15 or whatever were 2 more periods then repeat. Lunch then recess. Then 2 more periods. Not sure the length. Less than an hour??? Then last recess before the buses.
And that was just my Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 in 1 school. I'll make a new comment maybe about the next school

The advantage of students going to classes instead of the teachers coming to one class is that you can customize each student's whole curriculum. For instance, in my senior year I was in regular academic literature, history, and physics; and honors French and Calculus. If we were divided by general class standing, I'd have to be either in a science course I couldn't do well in (I'll fully admit to being in lower history and lit classes because I was lazy, not because I didn't understand) or being stuck in lower levels of French and math because of my lack of success in completely unrelated classes.
This isn't to say America has the best system, of course. It's harder to standardize education and know what a high school graduate will and won't be able to do when each one takes a different set of classes, and Dave is 100% right about getting from class to class being confusing and time consuming (especially in a big school like mine was). I'm just saying it's not that it's completely wrong either; both systems have good and bad points. (Other problems with US education notwithstanding.)
Australia is totally different,
We have primary school which is kindergarten - year 6. Then highschool is year 7 - year 12, middle school doesn't exist
It’s kinda the same in Spain, actually. We don’t have a word for “Middle School”. We call everything high school from 12-18 y/o (I don’t really understand the system with grades). But what the girl said in the video is true, that there are 2 educations in High school: ESO (which means “Obligatory Secondary Education”, and are 4 years) and Bachillerato (which is not mandatory but mostly everyone does it, and are the 2 years to prepare for college)
Same with New Zealand 🇳🇿 we also use year levels just like the UK 🇬🇧 and instead of middle school(for 7th to 11th graders) we have intermediate(for 7th to 8th graders) while 6th graders are still in primary/elementary school

I think the US varies by the local jurisdiction of your school. From where I went, Elementary was until 6th grade, Middle until 8th, and High until Senior (12th)
thats how it was for me too. I went to school in Southern California. Also, eating areas were outside, we didnt have indoor cafeterias
@@nicholasbrown4109 Yup. I'm from DC Metro Area and we also did not have an outdoor dining area. But we did have an indoor cafeteria and we could quickly drive out and get some Chipotle lol
in Malaysia, compulsory education is only until Primary 6:
Primary- 6 years: primary 1-6
Secondary (lower)- 3-4 years: Transition*, Form 1-3
Secondary (upper)- 2 years: Form 4-5- O-level equivalent
6th form/ pre-U- 1.5 years: lower & upper 6- A-levels equivalent
*between Primary 6 and Form 1, if you fail to pass our national language, there’s another year of Transition before you can start attending Form 1.
That’s why one can be as old as 21 yo, when they finally enter the first year of their first degree, while peers from other countries could have already graduated uni🥲
우리세대는 옛날교복세대인데, 일제의 잔재라고 해서없어지고, 학교마다 다른 요즘이 정말로 더 세련되고 괜찬아 보이네요.

In my county in Alabama, public schools had uniforms. Typically a school color polo, khakis, and specific types of shoes: girls were allowed tartan skirts in school colors. They claimed it was to reduce wealthier kids with nicer clothes treating less fortunate kids differently, but that was bs because the well off kids had name brand uniforms like Hollister, American Eagle, etc. everyone else had walmart clothing that was perfectly fine, just not expensive.

In Brazil, elementary education lasts until the 5th year, elementary school II goes until the 9th year, then there are three years, first, second and third year of high school.
We definitely weren’t allowed to have any “unnatural” hair colors in school in the U. S. even when they did away with the dress code, except modesty rules. And no tattoos could be visible. That was high school. Junior high we were required to wear belts and tuck our shirts in, and in elementary we had to wear solid color shorts with collars and only jeans, khakis, or navy skirts.
I remember that Spanish lady she's one of the panelists in 7.7 Billion love with Kim Heechul, Yoon In Na and Shin Dong Yeop 😊
Where I live in America, a lot of the kids in the local indian community attended Kumon. Kumon is like a math and english learning center that seems similar to Korean after-school academies (e.g. they give you additional homework). I don't think it's as stressful though 😅

One thing about American schools is that classes available can depend on how rich the school is too. I went to a somewhat poor middle school that didn't have an art class as an elective until I was in 7th grade. And only 8th graders were allowed to take the class. Thankfully, I was able to take the class the next year when I got to 8th grade, but my younger brother 2 years younger than me couldn't take it due to the school not having enough funds to keep it going.
also, you stated that high school was easy for Americans with university being more difficult. In my experience, High school was easy yes, but I feel like I learned so more more in university than I did High School. So much to the point that I felt like I waisted 4 years of my life by going to high school. Like, I took a Trig class in my senior year and barely ended up a B grade. Barely even a year later, I take the same class in college and got an A+. It could be that University professors are just better teachers, but I enjoyed college way more than high school.

내가 다녔던 초등학교는 1학년 6학년 애들만 급식실에서 먹고 나머지 학년은 교실에서 먹었음 중학생때도 급식실 없어서 급식차 끌고 와서 밥 먹고 고등학생때는 바닥도 시멘트라 실내화 유일하게 신었을때가 강당갔을때고 수저도 급식실에 다 있어서 수저도 안챙겨가도 됐었음 우리 고등학교가 입학했을때 두발 자유화라고 소문나서 다른 동네 애들도 엄청 왔었는데 입학하고 반년있다가 전학가는 애들 많았었고(두발 자유화가 아니였음) 동복 카라 라운드 선 넘으면 안됐고 그 흔한 반티도 없었음 우리때 그렇게 만들어 달라고 난리쳤었는데도 끝까지 안 만들어줬는데 고등학교 졸업하고 2년 뒤쯤에 동네에서 후배들 지나가는데 학교티 있는거보고 진작에 만들어주지 싶던데
요즘은 한국에 봄방학이 없어지고 있어요 아예 그냥 1월달에 방학하고 3월까지 쭉 쉬는 겨울방학? 처럼 변하고 있어서 저도 중고등학교 때 그랬었거든요 봄방학 얘기하니까 생각났네요
Dave's experience of US schools is a little unique as well! I had Elementary from grades 1-6, junior high* from 7-8, and high school from 9-12. *Junior high is usually 2 years, grades 7-8. Middle school is usually 3 years, either 6-8 or 7-9, taking one year from either the local ES or HS.
Also, as a girl, I assure you there were a LOT of clothing rules--skirts and shorts can't be shorter than your fingertips, shoulders straps at least 2 inches, no midriffs, no sheer materials, no low necklines/no cleavage, no offensive words or symbols, etc.
And we do have PE uniform in public school! I'm surprised Dave didn't mention that, because his school almost certainly had that as well. And if you attend a poor/underfunded school, usually in the intercity, those elementary schools will have a uniform to help the families save money.
You had uniform for gym class? We just wore whatever. I've actually never heard of that lol.
@@jeffffff For JHS and HS, yeah. That's interesting to hear, everyone I've ever talked to had a similar situation to mine but I'm not that surprised to hear it's not universal. There seems very little that's universal among US public schools...

저희 학교는 금요일에는 교복 자유였었어요. 월요일부터 목요일까지는 교복이 필수지만 금요일은 교복 입어도 되고 사복 입어도 됐었어요. 이렇게 영상으로 보니까 새롭네요^^
I’m from NZ 🇳🇿 and our school system here and in Australia 🇦🇺 is the same as UK 🇬🇧 (especially since the UK school system use year levels(from years 1 to 13) instead of grades(1st to 12th grade) used in the USA 🇺🇸 and we do too), it might confuse those who are used to the US grades 😊
사실 스페인에서 고등학교마다 다른데 보통 9시부터 1시까지 수업하고 1시~3시까지 점심 시간이 이라서 수업이 없는데 다음에 3시부터 5시까지 수업도 있어요. 근데 어떤 고등학교는 8시30~2시까지 하고 점심 시간이 없어서 그냥 수업이 끝나요.

90년대생인데 저흰 학생수가 많아서 식당 자리가 부족해서 초딩때 반에서 학생들이 반찬,국,밥 퍼서 배식 했던 기억나요 ㅎㅎ
거기다가 매번 토요일 학교도 갔다가 격주(2주에 한번 토요일 학교 감)로 바뀌고
고딩때는 야자 10시까지 하고
토요일에는 반강제로 자습하고
일요일에도 학교 열려있긴 했어요.

제가 고등학교 때는 격주5일제라 매달 셋째 주 토요일이 CA(부활동)였네요. 생각해 보면 놀토라는 단어가 이때 생긴 거네요 노는 토요일 줄임말로ㅋㅋㅋ. 학창 시절에 정말 많은 게 바뀌었네요 ᄏᄏᄏ 고등학교 때 "국기에 대한 경례"도 바뀌어서 다시 외워야 했는데 ㅋㅋㅋ

Hi dave, it would be nice to have another contents different 학창시절 for different states. even in same country "US" things are differents per states. I think that elementry school and jr. high school years are depends on the states. in CA (so-cal to be more exact) elementary school years are 1~ 6 and jr. high years are 7, 8 and high schools are 9 to 12. and also the "단임선생님" i think that depends on the states or school districts ? as well. i was here in the states (CA) since 7th (jr. high) never had such. it was pretty much same as college system with minor difference such as "no tuition" and "detation / suspension" kind of things. even the "급식" was depends on the school districts. i transferred to different high school (different school district) at jr in high school, and that high school did not had 급식 when previous high school had it. it's kinda interesting how school systems are different even in the same country
wowww my high school started at 7:30 and ended at 2:30 but if you had a part time job you could leave as early as 12. absolutely nobody would stay at school later than 2:30, it was a rush to go home!

요즘 세대는 모르겠는데 제가 미국에서 초중학교때 엄마가 한국음식 싸줄때마다 주변애들이 놀려서 그냥 버린적 몇번있었는데.. 교환해서 먹었을수 있는 환경이면 좀 더 좋았을듯

I believe Korea has the most competitive academic system, its just insane. China is probably a close second. Then comes the other East Asian countries/regions like Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.

한국은 동아리마저도 그냥 고등학교 스펙 쌓기용임. 그리고 한다 해도 한 학기에 아홉번? 나도 고등학교 때 스펙 쌓기용으로 수학동아리, 전자동아리 같은 재미없는 것만 함. 재밌는 동아리 자체가 별로 없고 하려고 해도 교사들이 뜯어말림. 진짜 쓰레기 같은 나라

Hey Dave, I think a good thing that you could’ve mentioned about American school lunches is the main reason that we serve our lunches kindergarten through high school is because America has a bad problem with kids not being able to eat at home either because their family doesn’t make enough money or because the parents are just bad parents so a lot of American schools serve lunch regardless of grade so that we kids have the option to at least have one meal a day
