IU is a Korean national treasure. Please do a deeper dive. She has been through so much. Her songs are like entries in her diary. So much tragedy. So much success.
Love IU so much.. BLUEMING is about like texting. Like how everything she threw over the fence was blue and what was sent to her was grey. Just like texts on a iPhone. And at the beginning she was woken up to a "earthquake" it was like a phone vibrating coz she had a message, which is why she got up and ran to her mailbox! Hope that makes the MV make more sense!
IU's KILLING VOICE would be the best start imo. This would give you a little idea on what to expect from her discography and vocals, just from the medley. then from there you can get in to the MVs and Live performances.

IU was only 14-15 years old when she sang Lost Child which was way beyond her years and showed how talented artist she was even back then. IU always changes up the genre and best in live versions so I recommend check out her live clips from the concerts, special clips, etc, she has many contents, happy listening!

I have nothing but respect for this woman, becoming one of the most influential and respected artists in Korea despite her rough past growing up and tough beginning as an artist. She is very talented as a singer, lyricist and producer and so intelligent. Please consider checking out her iconic album 'Palette' which one AOTY against big names like EXO and BTS.

I found IU by watching Moon Lovers and Hotel de Luna and was like she is an amazing actress so I looked her up. After watching a video about her life and how she struggled so much but reached her dreams I was so inspired by her...then I heard her voice and was like "how can a person be so talented and also a genuine amazing person"? I guess this is why they call her a national treasure

IU never really promoted her music to the west that's why she's mostly known there as an actress because of the popularity of her kdramas but in Korea Iu is an icon in the music industry. Iu was given the reins by her agency , making major decisions in her career as a singer. Iu mostly writes and directs the albums she releases. She's highly acclaimed for her meaningful songs, one of the most awarded singers in korea.
OMG FINALLY. I swear i waited 2 years for this.
I prefer her slower and darker tracks personally, eg Through The Night, Eight, My Old Story, Ending Story, etc. Though I also really like Twenty Three, You and I, Above The Time and Every End Of The Day. Basically her entire discography lmao.
Her lyrics are worth diving into as well! Also, pls do check out her live performances!! Her pitch is near perfect its crazy.
Here is a short Primer on IU. She did debute in 2008 with a beautiful song that wasn't well received at the time. Considered by many to be inappropriate and certainly unexpected from a young teen kpop artist, who were expected at that time to be cutesy. The MV for the song Lost Child was not released as a result until 3 years later.
IU,s road to her debute was not an easy one. The family suffered financial hardship and as a result IU and her brother lived with their grandmother in a 1 room apartment until the roaches focred them out.
IU started auditioning when she was 13 and was rejected 20 times befores being signed by a small company. She trained for only 9 months before debuting and very short time as many kpop artist can spend 5 to 10 years training before debuting.
After her debute the company went back and created the cutesy IU, which was a period of her career she really didn't like. Wearing the costumes and singing those songs. But she started to gain national attention in Korea.
In 2014 she took control of her music including writing, composing and producing. Her she left the cutsey IU behind and started singing more of her own work and covering songs that had special meaning to for.
In 2014 the New York Times in article covering the Kpop Convention in LA that year wrote of IU that she was showing the way forward for the Kpop industry.
IU has dominated the charts in Korea and there is no one even close in terms of the number of #1 hits, of lenght of time her songs have been on the top 100 charts (also 700 weeks).
IU is ranked as the wealthiest Kpop star in Korea. Last year she paid for an apartment in one of the newest building in Seoul and paid its $10,000,000 price in cash.
She became the 1st female korean performer to headline a show at the Seoul Olympic stadium this past Sept.
In January of this year Rolling Stone Magazine released an update to there list of the 200 Greatest Singers of Alk Time. IU became the 1st Korean to make that list.
But the thing about IU, that separates her from ALL her contemporaries are those things that you can't even describe. As I tell people often there is more to IU than meets the eye. Within her small 5ft 3 inch frame is something special that flows from her and impacts the her fans and others.
Discovering IU is a wonderous trip down the rabbit hole for those who actually invest the time to find out about her and listen to her music and watch her acting.
Many people who I have said these things to about IU are almost always non believers at the start. And it is a lot fun to watch them become more and more lost in her world. I hope you take up the journey.
2 last things for now. IU is one of the truely rare artist in that she sounds even better live. He MV,'s are filled with metaphors and symbolism that add even more to the story she is telling. In fact there are a number of songs that are actually like chapters to the story. Blueming is one of those songs. Blueming is part 3 of a story that IU started back in 2011 with the song You and I, which contained in it the date of Dec 31st 2019. IU released a song in Dec of 2019 (part of her Love Poem album) called Above the Time which is the continuation of You & I. Blueming was also part of that album. There is also a case to be made that her single Strawberry Moon released in Sept of 2021 was the final chapter. Many of her songs have back stories that if you don't know what it is you will completely miss the meaning. Songs like Eight which has a happy beat but is about her struggles with the 3 suicide deaths of friends, Love Poem about helping a freind through hard times just by being present, and My Sea about the struggles of becoming who you are.

IU’s killing voice is wonderful, but I’d recommend waiting until you know more of her songs to check it out! I really think you should check out Above The Time, Through The Night, & Lilac- but my main recs would be Good Day, The Red Shoes, Twenty Three and Palette, they’re just iconic.
IU might be the most influential K-Pop artist, she is the idol for idols, "nation's little sister". One of THE iconic career defining song in her early years was "Good Day". My personal favorite song from her is "Lilac" the MV as well as the dance practice). "Eight" is another very big one (with a very sad meaning behind it, there is a "explained" video from DKDKTV). With IU TV she has endless vlog / behind the scenes content at times hilarious. With IU Palette she has a great interview / variety show of her own (one of the last guests was New Jeans). As for live performances: "Eight" from her Golden Hour Concert from 2021 and "Blueming" from her Love Poem Concert in 2019 are both MUST WATCHES. :D For Golden Hour concert: "Eight" performance and then the two behind the scenes episodes might be the perfect combination. There is so much here...
EDIT: "Hotel Del Luna" and "My Mister" are her best K-Dramas to date btw... if you love her in crazy outfits / stylings... Hotel Del Luna for sure :D
I am SO down for this journey. Honestly, any pick is good as far as IU songs are concerned, but here are some things you might like to know:
The MVs for "You & I (2011)" and "Above The Time (2019)" are connected storylines and should be watched in the order they're released.
She has an "Age" series of songs where she talks about her thought process at certain ages of her life. These songs are "Twenty-Three (2015)", "Palette (2017)", and "Eight (2020)".
Speaking of Twenty-Three, 2015 is the year when she officially started taking creative control for her music. She writes all of her songs, composes a lot of it, and she is a main producer for all her albums. She still wrote and composed some songs before 2015 (like Friday, my favorite IU song ever), but nowadays she writes most of- if not all of them. Not saying one era is better than the other, but you'll definitely notice a change in music styles from that point on.

I've read this somewhere, iu's blueming is one of the songs out there is written so smartly by her, the meaning behind it, the interpretation she used with chat message; the blue one when we send it and the grey one we received, when first time i heard this song i was confused too 😅
Palette and Dear Name are a couple of my favorites. Also SHINee did a beautiful cover of Dear Name when they were on IU’s show called IU’s Palette that I would love to see your reaction to.
Honestly you had a pretty good snapshot to start with. Recommendations from here would be 'My Sea' and 'Hold my hand', two of her all time best and 'Strawberry moon', a recent one that I really enjoyed.

Love this! so excited. Through the Night is still one of my favorite slower songs of hers. Some music of hers I can put on and snuggle up on my couch with tea or coffee and mellow out and then some is upbeat or even take you on a journey. Lol. She has some songs where she talks about her age and where she is in life at that time hopefully someone can correct or add to this if there is more but I think it starts with 23 then pallette (where she is 25) the eight (where she is 28) that would be a cool video to do

Her live music more amazing, please check out her Love Poem Concert-2019 & Golden Hour Concert-2022. She is considered as Idol of the Idols & highly respected artist out there in Korea because of her personality. There is always a fight between different Idol’s Fandom but I think every Fandom likes IU.
what i really love about iu music is it's so honest and i don't know, but her voice itself sucks you into her own world. IU writes almost all her songs that it looks like her diary. Around the blueming era, fans started speculating that she might be in a getting-to-know phase with someone.... and that's exactly right. This year, it was revealed that she's in a relationship with a famous actor.... A "CELEBRITY" ;)

Great song choice for this round of reacting to IU, these (except for Lost Child) were examples of her happy songs. On the contrary she also has songs which will make you cry. If ever you decide to do another round of IU, you should check out her ballads cause they're so good too. And the back stories behind it will make you cry. Her MVs are equally stunning as it's not just beautiful but full of symbolisms too

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Hearts Ryeo is my all time favorite kdrama. I watch it at least a couple of times a year.
If I'm not mistaken from what I've read before, BBIBBI is about the sasaengs, d*spatch, just some "fans" who don't understand the boundary between an idol and a fan. She was talking to them stop following her with their phones and cameras mobbing her face with those, and to stop making rumors about her when they don't even know any single thing in her private life.
