Very well done, Freddy! I just discovered Paul’s CZcams channel. I’m very happy to see your video here, as it came up in my radar since finding Paul’s. All the best to family and friends. Very happy for you from USA.
Well done ... I was just surfing CZcams when your excellent vid popped up. I now have a solution for nexts years greenhouse at our summer res. Of coarse we should all have a cheers to Bucky
Nice dome! I built a 40 foot dome but covered it with Polyurethane rigid foam board and Densdeck on top of that so panel making was a bit more involved. I want to make one like yours for a greenhouse tho. I like the design and my first question about the film looks like its already been answered. Nice work!
great work done mate!! and the more amazing was that you did it into a small space!!....you are a referent! regards from under southern cross....Chile!.
Hiya there, thank you very much for watching and commenting. Maybe in the summer I’ll make a follow up on use and maintenance. In the winter it’s my dump for dirty and wet bike clothes...F
I got me one of those done and it was worth every single penny!! Every single time I get in is like a new experience, my pets love to sleep inside. And acup of coffee in the morning tastes like heaven
I'm part way through building mine. Quite fast once you've built the jigs, I've spent a week on it so far and built all the pentagon triangles. I expect it will take 3 weeks in total for it to be complete. I'm doing the 6m GD27 using 3"x2" treated timber. It's good fun and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the space for one. A bit laborious but not hard at all, anyone could build one.
I am planning on building a greenhouse and am unsure on whether to build a poly tunnel, stick-built with window panes, or a grow dome. I like the geodesic dome structures and can see potential in utilizing the vertical space for tall vining plants. I like the idea of having an area in the greenhouse to sit at a table while dinning on salads and drinking wine.
Nice work, looks great. I like the use of DPC, good idea. Can I ask where you purchased the sheet polythene from? It looks quite thick so should stand up to the weather well.
Well done! I imagine you may even be able to replace damaged triangular sections of the poly if that becomes necessary, but I believe your prediction is correct - you'll enjoy that dome for years to come, naysayers can go build their own.
The poly is wrapped around the edge of the triangle and stapled so you`ll have to remove the triangle before you can remove the staples ;) This construction method is also prone to leak where adjacent triangles meet and also at the vertices. Tape is appled over the joints as a fix but its not a reliable long term solution to what is really a design issue...
Everyone that sits in my dome says that it gives them a very tranquil feeling. It is extremely relaxing just to sit there and drink your morning cup of coffee. Mine is a 16' 5/8ths dome made with 1/2" electrical conduit with no cover. Freddy you are right, they are worth all the time and effort you put into one.
I like that you don’t use hubs to hold this together. I’m building one with the same idea. It makes sense to me that the hubs are the weakest part of the structure. When you join the sides, It is a stronger design. Great job!
well done Freddy, saying hi from San Antonio TX , human s are under-rated. Don't be measured from your feet to the top of your head, but rather from the top of your head to the sky. thanks
I got the G 15 plans, haven't built it yet though. I really like the base for yours though. That style base would allow me to fill those voids in the panels with insulative Aircrete.
Hiya, thank you very much for watching my channel. Regarding the base...I had limiting space and needed to have two access points (doors) as the dome is situated between the house and our log cabin in the back of the garden. The base made that possible as it lifted the dome by about 3foot. It also makes the inside interestingly spacious. Good luck with your build. F
Well done and thanx and a hat tip from across the pond. The details you documented with your camera were absolutely wonderful and have helped me immeasurably. No question that your toils were not wasted in the least and well worth the time, and patience, spent. Thank you ever so much. BTW what was the bevel angle on the longitudinal lengths of the struts?
Hi Phil, thank you very much for the encouraging words. I'm glad that my video help you in your own endeavour. Can I recommend Paul Robinson's website GEO_DOME.co.uk. Paul sells his plans at very affordable price and provides you with all the needed measurements for the dome. He's really good. Hope this helps. F
Good day!! It's been 5 years since you created your dom. Great Video. Inspiration for us.. could you please share the experience you had ...how the Dom is holding
Hi there, thank you very much for checking out my channel. I didn’t keep very tight records on the budget, but I would say somewhere around the £1000 mark...it’s the time that it takes to fix the plastic on the frames that I underestimated...
Hiya, the plastic will year after a certain amount of years for sure. There’s a few places where it has already done so. However I resorted to a different solution. I bought a big sun screen and covered the Dome with it. For the purpose I’m using it, it is the right solution. It keeps it even more dry on rainy days and in the summer it provides needed shade. I might look in a different solution though in a later stage...

@@TheOldDog Did you ever consider installing the "original" film on the inside, with an outer film, as you describe here as your repair, as a means to create some insulation? I live in the cold and would need to insulate a bit for this to work.

Hi Dario, thank you very much for visiting my channel. I can’t do it this week, however I’ll try next week to make a video about your request. Thank you for expressing your appreciation. We’ll talk soon on the video...Freddy
It is a 3v dome, for calculation try this "www.byexample.net/library/calculators/geodesic_dome_calculator/?domeRadius=5&domeUnits=meters" or google "dome calculator".
Very inspiring, I've wanted to build a dome for many years. Does the plastic sheeting rip often? I would think snow and heavy winds would cause them to break? Would you recommend har/rigid plastic sheets?
Hi There, thank you very much for watching my video. My Dome is up now I think for it's third year and the first plastic is still on. I live at the end of a windy corridor coming from the seaside and the wind can be seriously violent, but the dome nor the poly has moved an inch. As long as you put enough time in fixing it properly as recommended by Paul Robinson in his videos...Also there's poly in different thicknesses and UV resistance. It's worth looking into that as well. Regarding snow we only had maybe once or twice for a couple of days the fun of snow, so I have not much experience on that issue. For that short time and maybe 1" thick. Hope this reply helps you to have a go at it, it's really rewarding when the project is finished and you can have the benefit and use of it. F
Hi there, thank you very much for looking at our channel. Yes the cover is a plastic sheet on a roll. Polythene with UV resistance. The roll is about 4foot wide. It’s not possible to cover the pentagons and hexagons in one go. As the polythene need to be pulled and stretched before fixing to the timbre. Hope this helps you in your own endeavour. If you would have more questions don’t hesitate to ask away. Have a nice day.

Hi There thank you very much for looking at our video. I agreed when I bought the plans not to share them. But you can purchase them very cheap on the following website. Geo-dome.co.uk. Good luck.
Great Job, looks nice. Just one comment. By using silicone between the frames you made it harder to take the frames apart for replacing the poly film. I'm wondering if the joints wouldn't be watertight enough without the silicone?
Hiya, thank you very much for looking at our video. Sorry for the delayed reply. The plastic in itself is preventing for a real watertight finish. Hi there, thank you very much for watching the video. I have purchased a large waterproof sun shade. That covers it now. Perfect solution for our use. Have a nice one and stay safe. F
Nice work! Just one question, I saw that there are small gaps between the panels, do you have problems with heavy rain and water dripping through these gaps or do the screws provide enough pressure to combat that problem?
Hi there, thank you very much for looking at our video. After you have connected the timbers with the screws you still need apply a sealing tape over the joints on the outside. Which is only good for one season. (One year). The timber contracts and expands over the year and the change of climate. That and the heat from the sun in summer will eventually reduce the adhesion of the sealing tape. Resulting in leakage. Sealing needs to be redone or as I have resolved the problem you purchase a large sunshade and cover the dome with it, does the job perfectly for me. It provides shade for when we sit in the dome in summer and it makes it waterproof. F
@@TheOldDog Panel domes are good for rigid coverings. For flexible coverings hub and strut is a better option, no tape required and you can replace the some or all of the poly without dismantling the dome because it isnt trapped between the triangles ;) The sunshade may help but it doesnt solve the underlying issue with the dome. The sunshade will reduce the light intensity when its sunny but also when its pouring with rain.

Panel domes are good for rigid coverings. For flexible coverings hub and strut is a better option, no tape required and you can replace the some or all of the poly without dismantling the dome because it isnt trapped between the triangles ;) The sunshade may help but it doesnt solve the underlying issue with the dome. How you find the angle of the lines? (Looks like when you split woods on table saw , the blade doesn't adjusted at 90 degre )
Hiya, thank you very much for looking at the video and your great comments. Actually I followed a plan from Paul who sells them online. And in the plan he provides all the needed angles one needs to cut the timber at. Once the blade is set you just rip all the pieces. Freddy
@@TheOldDog Do you have the link to the plan please? Many thanks :-)
Rachel Photography hiya, I did buy the plans from the following website geo-dome.co.uk. The agreement is that when you buy a plan you do not redistribute it. And I do respect the owners directives. Thank you very much for looking at our video. Freddy
