I punched a hole on an old American power strip in the exact same way, trying to turn it on. Unfortunately I got shocked, fortunately I'm in the American continent so 120v didn't kill me lmao
The amps are the ones that kill you.
Volts don’t kill anyway.
Now glue it all back together.

This specific power strip with the plastic rivets likes to disintegrate, I had two of them, it's not just the sun. The Kopp and Kontavill ones are ok/good, but the best power strips are the Kontaset ones (there are at least 20 different Kontaset versions, but all of them have replaceble cables and basicly indestructible). (It's an old hungarian brand, but you can find used ones for cheap and they are better than most of the new ones.)

I got a very small amount of water with a little bleach in it on my kettle when i was cleaning the worktop, the next time i went to make tea, lots of little white granules were floating around on the top of the hot water, I looked at the spout of the kettle and noticed that it was rough looking, when i rubbed it a little, it disintegrated to dust size pieces. I'm glad i noticed it or i could have been ingesting the stuff. I since found out that certain plastics don't do well when they come into contact with certain household chemicals. I now use a stainless steel model.

That happened to a TV I was padding up on a local move once, l leaned over it to grab the corner of the pad and my hand went through the top of it, I got the blame and the company gave them a replacement TV.
had such a case. 10 years behind double glas officebuilding window. disintegrated when removing a ventilation fan.
The sunlight broke down the plastic at a molecular level.
Wow, I've never seen anything like that before. That's an example of what UV light can do to plastic.

at least it has a GS "Geprüfte Sicherheit" stamped into the mold.

I remember seeing something similar happen to one or more power boards like that (but with Type G sockets), where there were damage to the sockets themselves, and someone just taped over the damaged sockets (as well as the switches on individually switched boards).
Well, I guess that's how the cookie crumbles...! 🤷♂️
Had one as well that suffered the same fate, don’t even think it was exposed to the sun or heat for that matter… It was branded Brennensthul, witch in my world typically stands for quality… I remember grabbing it to move it, and it just fell apart in my hands, it was even thinner plastic than yours. I was just bloody lucky that it was disconnected from the wall outlet.
Wow, interesting! I thought Brennenstuhl was one of the better brands for these things, but it seems like they are not perfect either...
@@DrCassette It was a three-way strip like yours but without the switch, bought in the 90’s, I guess even they had/have a range of these smaller ones with reduced price-quality. I’m sure the bigger, heavy duty ones holds up to the quality we expect from them!
I've got an early 90's one from Brennenstuhl, 5-way and it still is fine. This one is also exposed to daily sunlight through one of my windows.

A few years ago this is exactly what happened to an electrical outlet just like this one in my parents' country house. In fact, mine fell apart even more easily than this one. Both the top and bottom. I was amazed by this. How is it possible for plastic to fall apart like this? And the danger if the electrical outlet is plugged in. I've never seen anything like it. The pleasure it gave me to break this electrical outlet in my hands and at the same time angry for having such cheap material. And I didn't even remember to film.
I'm not sure but I think that in the case of my parents' electrical outlet it was not in the sun but subjected to very low temperatures during the winter and very high temperatures in the summer for years.
Same with vacuümcleaner and aquarium filter 💦 split open after 4 years.

Doktor, save the power switch and the power cord.
I didn't trust the power switch, and the power cord was quite dirty. So I didn't keep them. I have plenty of other switches and power cords :)
I just accidently forgot a black/transparent cassette case outside yesterday after listening to a few cassettes in the garden - after I noticed that today, it already was too late, the black plastic part got molten by the sun and therefore is completely deformed now. Luckily it wasn't the cassette itself that spent the entire day out in the sun.
Also, I've got a 4x power strip at my grandparents house which is totally yellowed on the top side of it's housing and the plug.
How is the UV supposed to have destroyed the plastic when it is opaque?

That's one way to open it when you have not got the correct security screwdriver.
And that's one more justification to why I build my own powerstrips...
I had the exact same thing happen to one extension cord very similar to that one. We have lots of them, one decided to degrade this way. I only found out when I grabbed it to push the button and my thumb just went through the side (right where the exposed mains contacts are). It just crumbled like a cookie, just like yours. Must be some missing chemical from a batch of plastic or something?

I guess modern plastic is designed to disintegrate in the sun. I have a small Bissel portable upholstery cleaner that I used to clean my car. I stored it on the porch where it got exposed to a lot of sun and when I went to use it the water tank broke apart in my hand.

and falls apart when you get round to using it.
this even happens with buckets, plant pots, car parts and storage containers.
and as far as power bars are concerned, i'm still cursing a Chinese 4 plug power bar
it slowly melted inside over a period of time, and eventually the Live contacted the Earth.
modern contact breakers on my house supply werte triggered
but not quickly enoughas it took out 2 high end workstations and a laser printer that were connected to the power bar when the contact finally touched.
I guess that wasn't European made plastic. Ridiculous how we produced regular plastic that could stay out 20 years and still have plasticity and we're importing such rubbish from elsewhere and letting our industries ruin.
