  • In Part 1 of this 3 Part tutorial video, I show you how I airbrushed the 3 headed dragon using iwata & sagola airbrushes, trident paint, paper and vinyl masks all on a custom chopper front fender. By the end of this video you will understand how I airbrushed the 'white underpainting', providing an accurate foundation for further detailing of the artwork.

    Hi Carson, hope you are well, long time since Ive messaged from the UK, been busy painting my old Austin 1958 Van (purple candy!) for months. Just got back to doing some fine airbrush work and catching up on a few months vids' from you. Enjoyed seeing the step by steps, I saw you moved, hope the baby is okay and life is bearable :) I managed to step up to a micron iwata SB which is 1.8 and about as good as I can get. Im still struggling with fine detail though, particularly the build up with white and the repeats with highlights and darks. I use createx, went over to the illustration paints, using plenty of reducer, sometimes a touch of their 4030 balancing product, pressures from 5psi up to 20 but even then I cant find that sweet spot like you achieve. Im sieving it through a stocking as well, just in case! The constant tip dry, or minor blocking means I spend more time clearing than I do painting. Having to blast paint through it, take it partly apart, blow it through etc. Any detailed tips that might help? You dont seem to have anything like the issues I get.

      Hi Phil great to hear from you again and great job on doing your Austin in Candy that’s a huge undertaking 👌🏻
      In regards to mix and tip drying, it’s really difficult to give a 100% accurate formula as each individuals set up is different, including climate where you are painting, compressor ie . Psi and also what moisture filters etc..you are using will all depend on your outcome.
      I tend to mix most of my colours at a ratio of around 30%paint and 70% reducer for fine detail at around 15psi and near 1:1 ratio or slightly more reducer for general airbrushing and about 30-40 psi.
      Just keep playing around until you find that sweet spot, I know that’s not much help but it may take time and error but it will be worth it in the end, all the best cheers Carsten 👍🏻

      @@AirbrushAsylum Hi Carsten :) Sorry, I mispelt your name before, should know better by now, I always feel compelled to write Carson, guess its an unusual name! Yes I know the format for this of course, listened and watched every video of yours, which are of course simply the best anywhere on the internet, I mean that sincerely too. I find, and I see the same in this dragon of yours on screen at times, whenever I put white (or a tinted coloured white) or a reduced and transparented black, that either of these colours dont seem part of the painting somehow. They almost seem to sit on top, seperate and not blending into the paintings. I guess its because the contain none or little of the pigments of the colours around them. Watching your part 3 dragon, the final black and trans layer, the dark tones at places seem to dirty the image and the deep lines dont blend. But somehow, when you have done it all, it suddenly works! Mine are becoming a mess and not clean/crisp like yours. Not really sure how to fix it or improve that part. Ive got a fire dragon, ie orange/red tones, Im trying to do a highlight and white stands out like a flag on top, and anything tinted looks pink. I mixed red, burnt sienna, black illustration for the dark, but it still stands separate or muddies everything. Where yours looks plasticy, wet, glossy and clean, mine looks blurred, flat and grubby lol. Oh well!

    I am an Airbrush Asylum addict!!! With the Sagola...are you keeping a constant eye on the paint...or do you go until it runs dry? And does the paint stay in the reservoir well? I love the design...I was just wondering about this airbrush after seeing you use it in this and other videos. The only review I can find on the Sagola XTECH100 is in Spanish. Thank you for all you do!!!

    • @AirbrushAsylum
      @AirbrushAsylum  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Brandon thanks for your comment and yes I use it until the paint runs out , the 100 is a nice brush the only thing I noticed is that the needle is much softer than iwata so be careful with it and keep a sharpen air handy 👍🏻

      @@AirbrushAsylum ...Thanks so much for replying!!! Dang...I was hoping the 100 was going to be a little more robust. The price point is not bad...but I don't want to fight something that's finicky.
      Again...thank you for all you do....I know it requires a lot of work on your part!!!
