  • Please support me on Patreon, let's get from Camel to Leviathan! / mtg_phil Today we are taking a look at the deck whose name speaks for itself - 42 Lands, and what lands they are (spoiler alert: most of them are Forests for the sake of Living Lands).
The recipe here looks good on paper: use the unfair Fastbond, play as many lands as you want to, draw 7, play more lands, pump them and swing them, untap them with Candelabra of Tawnos, use Maze of Ith and Island of Wak-Wak for defensive purposes! There is even an obscure, yet incredibly memorable combo of Living Plane + Karakas + Living Plane, which is a powerful hard lock for your opponent.
But how does it work in reality? Watch the games after the deck tech and find out!

Great deck design! I've see some variations with stasis/time vault as well. Looks like a fun game plan to pilot - like a puzzle.

Thank you! I've never seen a Stasis version of lands. It's true that it works like a puzzle and it's very easy to get things wrong and not be able to reverse that

Regarding library of Alexandria, it’s clearly the most busted card in all of old school.
I really don’t understand formats with one strip because it leaves too many chances for library to be left unchecked and warp games.
Their justification is that strip warps games on its own, but leaving library unchecked is way more warping of a game state than using multiple strip mine. It also leaves Mithras factory unchecked for a lot of games and that card on its own can totally dominate games turn after turn, especially when it pumps.
Factory should be restricted and loa should be banned, if strip mine is restricted. Brian Weissman is 100% correct
Therefore 4 strip mine is corrdct

I do agree that Library has broken many games, I deem Mishras even more annoying since they are absolutely everywhere and can only be taken out by a few cards.
However, 4 Strip Mines make the format much more aggro and fast-paced, especially with recursion and more land destruction. Therfore, some archetypes become unplayable under EC rules, that's the rationale favored by such rulesets as Atlantic and Swedish.

@@mtgphil42 then loa should be banned as well as restrict factory. Thats the correct balance. You literally will lose a game if you don’t draw your own single strip mine, to an active and repeated library of alexandria and bigger creatures like Juzam will die all day long to pumped factories

"Why 42...", because it's the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything!

Absolutely brilliant!! How did you confirm that this combo was indeed known back in the 90s?

Thank you! Actually, now that you've mentioned it, I feel a bit puzzled because I learned about this combo from a friend of mine that I asked whether it was his invention, and he told me it was a known combo. However, that didn't mean that the combo was known back in the 90s - it wouldn't even work back then as the legendary rule for creatures worked based on the creature type rather than a supertype. Therefore, Tabernacle wouldn't have become a legendary creature and you couldn't bounce it with Karakas. To think that they would have enabled it in the same set would be too good, so it looks like it is more of a bug than a feature.
The supertype of legendary creatures was introduced in the Kamigawa block where they had a lot of those.
The earliest mention of the combo I could find is on the French combo page, dated 2006. The author is somewhat surprised by fact that nobody had thought of it before, but it does make perfect sense because it couldn't work until late 2004 when Champions of Kamigawa were released: www.magiccorporation.com/gathering-combos-view-9677-the-tabernacle-at-pendrell-vale-karakas-living-plane.html

Neat deck, does is just fold to Moat?

      @mtgphil42  Před 6 měsíci

Sadly, yes, it also dies to Earthquake and even Sandstorm. :D I can't see it winning a match in a tournament, really, so there's no sideboard, but if your opponent gets really unlucky, I guess anything can happen.
