Welcome to our 1,200-mile summer road trip from Manchester to Paris and back. In this video, you’ll see what it’s like to take a family of 4 on a 2-week road trip in a Long Range Tesla Model 3. The good, the bad, and the ugly!
We only used Tesla Superchargers and free destination chargers so you’ll see whether this caused any range anxiety on our trip. I’ll also show you some scenarios where Tesla’s Automatic Emergency Braking kicked in so you can weigh in as to whether it was the right thing to do or not.
We’ll also see whether all our family’s stuff will fit in the boot or not! Starting from Manchester we’ll head down to Windsor, then across to Dover, across the channel by ferry, and straight down the west coast of France and its fantastic beaches!
FYI, here's a list of the places we went to along the coast in case you want to visit yourself:
    - Cap Blanc Nez
    - Wissant
    - Fort D'Ambleteuse
    - Wimereaux
    - Boulogne-sur-Mer
    - Plage d'Hardelot
    - Plage de Berck
    - National Nature Reserve of the Somme
We’ll then drive inland to the champagne region and when we get to Paris, I’ll share some handy charging tips on taking a Tesla to Center Parcs & Disneyland Paris.
Help support me and the channel by buying the below recommended Tesla accessories I use. Buy from either Amazon or AliExpress. FYI, I've never had a problem ordering from AliExpress, all orders arrived fine, just takes a little longer but you can save a tonne by buying them directly.

The second day I had my MY, I drove from Lisbon to the Algarve and then to St Malo and subsequently Warwick.
Long journeys with the Tesla supercharger network utterly easy.

Took my M3 to VN too and used the charging, which was very handy. Rather than using a regular travel adapter, it's recommended to get a specialist adapter designed for the constant high current. Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone watches this and thinks it's a good idea to use a regular one. V interesting to see the braking incidents and that they didn't happen again. I've only had them on AP.

Great and inspiring video. We ordered the Standard Range Model Y and as far as i can see, its only a few extra stops on a long road trip. When chosing the standard range, we could also stay under the limit before extra taxes were put on the car + the extra horse powers cost a lot in insurance here in Denmark.

Thanks for a great video, loved the views and your journey really brought back memories as I'm from Manchester but moved to France back in 2008. I must admit I've not watched many Tesla content videos recently as we've literally just taken delivery of our new multi coat red Model 3 and am still getting used to all its technology. I had forgotten all about the rainbow road so just about to go out and see if I can find it on my car. Thanks again for the great content and as a PSG supporter it was a nice bonus to see them included in your video 😀

Excellent and enjoyable video. Appreciate your video editing too. For the Tesla AEB, it seemed too abrupt compared with the way my Model S handles pedestrians in close proximity. In my road trip to "Flying Goose Mountain" with lots of people walking nearby, the proximity alarm went off instead of any emergency braking. Btw, this is a "road trip" in Hong Kong (if you can call it a road trip!).
Anyway, thanks for a wonderful video. Subscribed.

Yes, I’d be interested as to how the Tesla would handle it nowadays (this was filmed 8 months ago) as I think the software has been tweaked to favour proximity warnings too.
I get plenty of proximity warning alarms so imagine it’d start with that at least rather than just straight to AEB.

Check your tyres don’t have sound deadening foam inside them or tyreweld might not work.
I regularly drive our M3LR from French Pyrenees to England. I leave home with 100% charge, stop at Saintes Supercharger with about 15-20% for about 45mins, then to Nantes Supercharger for a top back up to 80% and some lunch and then the last full charge at Rennes before driving to St Malo ferry. This means I have loads in the battery when I arrive in UK. All Superchargers I use for this journey, are in Hotel car parks and this means leaving the motorways to get to them. The cost of using public chargers means EV charging costs are at parity with petrol and diesel mpg. I can drive the same route in a 1.5 turbo diesel with a full tank.

Brilliant video - thinking about doing a very similar trip! Extremely well filmed and edited too :). Did you find many non-Tesla cars charging at the superchargers? Once concern is that due to charge port locations, other cars might need to park sideways across 3 chargers which would mean chargers are listed as available in the Tesla Navigation but are blocked on arrival.

btw, if you have the blue 16A connector for your granny charger it’s possible to get a EU 16A plug to 16A blue socket. This increases the charge rate up from the 2kWh that the GB plug limits you to.
Check out caravan cables for a suitable one. Make sure it’s rated for 16A as some are too thin.

Great video quality and editing! I drove my TM3 LR 21 to Lake Como last Summer and had a similarly smooth experience - with free charging. A couple of friendly advices: 1) In the notes on top, I suggest you record your equipment for the benefit of the viewer. Several of us will wonder e.g. what camera and mic etc. were used for the excellent video. 2) The quality is too good to be marred with repeated and not so subtle attempts to get us to engage ("let me know below....") - we get that it increases points and pay, but let the quality speak for itself, and be the magnet, focus and attraction - also; most likely it will be easier to get repeated viewers that way. Again - a friendly advice that might come handy. Wish you and your family the best.

I really love the colour of your car. It's a stunning car. Did you take off the hubcaps that came with the car or are those low profile wheels? What is the anti tilt for? Is that a security feature?

    • @rickontesla
      @rickontesla  Před 2 lety +1

      Answers below 🙂:
      - Connectivity worked fine in France.
      - Paid contactless for toll roads (Halifax Clarity card)
      - Took the aero covers off and put on the 5 arm clamps which look great IMO. They're not low profile wheels.
      - Yeah, anti-tilt is to stop someone craning your Tesla on to a low loader truck and doing one with it!

No, we didn't wash the car at all whilst we were away (apart from scraping a few bugs off the number plate). Hello Rick, Very nice Video, shows definitely that Tesla has the upper hand when it comes to convenience with their Superchargers!! I have a Model 3 Standard+ in Canada Just outside of Ottawa, Ontario and planning a trip next year to France/Netherlands/Spain and maybe even Portugal and was thinking of renting a Tesla there for the 2 or 3 weeks of the trip. Is that a possible thing and is it decent price or exorbitant ripoff?? (PS Europeans are often challenged when they come to Canada with our distances, If I go visit my Papa who live in the same province as myself (Ontario) our weekend visit is easily 1200 Km- The reverse is true also I discovered when for our Honeymoon in France in2014 with an RV my wife was so surprised that by the time she found out where we were on the Michelin Map, I had passed it 10 minutes before!! The breathalyser is a wonderfully french bit of stupidity. You were legally required to carry it, but there was no prescribed punishment for not doing so. If that's the case I'll just setup my garage to be able to remotely manage Turo rentals and rent my Tesla on that to offset the rental cost in Europe. You charged first time when you had 54%? That's gonna be some slow charging. You can easily drive to 10%, or close to that, can't imagine there was not chargers for 44% charge distance...
Second charge at 42%? You are talking about charge rate while you charge at way to high a percentage.
Charge rate show above 85%, that's also bad charging, charge no higher than 80% and don't charge above 20%. Preferably around 5%, but you can have some margin and charge at 10%.
Third charge at 39% to 97%, at least 4 times longer than what you should be doing.
You doubled charging time from what you needed at minimum.
When charging at V3, there's no influence of other cars charging, you get max charge all the time. Only V2 with A and B are affected to share charge. (V2 has two charging cables and max 150kW rate, V3 has one cable and 250kW rate. V2 shares max range between every A and B duo, so 1A and 1B occupied means you split 150kW. V3 has a lot more capacity and will most likely never see you lose time or much charging speed.)
When at V2 charge your charge speed is only affected by the person to either your left or right, if you share the same number and use A and B, so what you are saying doesn't make a lot of sense. If a charge park is fully occupied accept the B next to your A, you get max speed, it's the only thing you should care about.
Charging stationary to 100% and leaving car there for hours, better if you don't charge to 100%, but if you do time it so you leave close to fully charged and not leave it there for hours.
Fifth charge from 50%, again you talk about charge speed but you start charge at wrong percentage...
For somebody wanting to really prepare, you seem to not know certain key things about charging speed, the different Tesla stalls and at what percentage you should charge to what percentages.

      @rickontesla  Před 2 lety +1
