If you use the small blade, you’ll automatically be doing Tip No. 1, cutting close to the ricasso, because the small blade is shorter, so you can’t cut as far toward the tip as you can with the large blade.
By the way, I bought your “Bushcrafting Projects” book, and I like it.

👉🏻 hellooo Felix! Stupid CZcams stopped recommending you, so I haven’t seen you in a while. I know most of what you showed, but I remember when you talked about the slicing motion.
I’m used to using tools, and I have to admit, I looked at carving like using a chisel, which doesn’t slide as it cuts. When you pointed out that a slicing action is more efficient, it totally made sense.
    Have a great week!

    Felix, great tips as Always!
    The shoving
Slicing motion also applies to using a machete as well. A few years ago I handed my nephew a machat hunting camp and asked him to cut some brush. A few minutes later returned saying that the blade was too dull to work. Knowing that was not true, I walked over to a small sapling and cut it into with one casual swing. His mouth dropped open!
He had been unsuccessfully hacking much smaller branches with the blade hitting at 90 degrees and no slicing motion.
I showed him how to hit the branches he wanted to cut at about a 30 to 40 degree angle, similar to the angle one would use to whittle a piece off the limb. Then I explained that he needed to swing the blade so that it also hit the item he wanted to cut with a little bit of a slicing action that draged a bit of the blade over the surface to be cut. He had much better results after that and a little practice.
I have seen others do the and thing ABC excert a lot of energy to cut just a few branches. Once you get your technique down, the machete does much of the cutting using just is own weight, you just have to steer it.
I'll keep your lessons from this video in mind while carving and when teaching others to use a machete.
BTW, I've heard other bushcrafters referring to the area between your torso and your knees as The Triangle of Death!

From the groin to the tips of both knees is what we call the triangle of death. Don't carve there as there are large arteries and veins located there that can cause you to bleed out before you can get help. Always carve in front of the knees or on the outside of the thigh so a slip will be going away from your legs. Also make sure you are clear of other people.

    Hallo Felix,

10:20 I make the distinction between a slicing cut and a skewed cut, the second position is skewed, where the first could be a push cut or a slicing cut.. Both slicing and skewed will boost cutting compared to a square push cut.

    Hoi Felix!
    Super Video! 👍
