[ONEPLUS OPEN REVIEW]
In the rarefied, near-$2000 air of the ultra-high-end US foldable market, Americans have only ever had two options: the super skinny Samsung Galaxy Fold … or the pudgy, peculiar Google Pixel Fold.
Today, into that obvious “Opening” comes the most compelling device from OnePlus I’ve ever covered: a large-format foldable that rides like a regular phone when it’s closed, with a refreshing take on multitasking when it’s open … and a camera that finally lives up to its colossal casing.
I’m Michael Fisher and I’ve been daily-driving a Galaxy Fold since … well, since the first one! But I think the OnePlus Open may well be my next phone.
[ABOUT THIS VIDEO]
This video was produced following three weeks with a OnePlus Open review sample provided by OnePlus. Pre-production sample running pre-release software. The device received one software update during the review process, and was evaluated based upon version CPH2551_13.2.0.9(EX01).
OnePlus hosted a press event in New York City for the OnePlus Open pre-briefing, which included a camera-testing boat excursion during which food and drink were provided.

When you wait only for one CZcamsr because he is just awesome: script, editing, background music, attention to detail, authenticity....and the list goes on! We appreciate you, Michael.
Seconded
I am always here for his articulation. I sometimes find myself stopping to watch his videos before watching others.
Well said. I was just saying that Mr. Mobile's reviews never disappoint.
Agreed 💯
Frfr!
When there is a foldable phone on the market, i always think of you and check if you already reviewed the unit. You are the foldable authority
I think it's just me 🤣
Same here!
True story
Same here when i saw the announcement I wondered what would mr mobile would say about it ❤️👍🏻
He's just the authority full stop!
Open Canvas is by far the best implementation of multitasking yet. It's far more intuitive and is much suited for foldables and touch screen than even iPad OS. I hope this can be implemented in their tablets too cause it just make sense.
as interesting as it looks to me, as a fold user, I don't love that there isn't 'also' an option to have 3 apps all on screen at once without shifting. I would love this option, but I do personally need 3 concurrently available at least once a week for some tasks.
Would be willing to give it a try tho
Open Canvas makes Stage Manager look like child’s play.
@@coltonbyu i think there is, but you’d need to put them all in a smaller size
@@coltonbyu same
@@auliamate Yeah, at least its something, but thats not ideal
I'd like to see this "OPEN CANVAS" come to tablets as well. It's such a smart approach, that may not be 100% there right now, but I just can't see how this isn't the thing everyone else apes for their next foldable updates and devices.
100% agree!
It reminds me of the way you can swipe between desktops in OSX and Gnome-linux. If they added that ability to foldables, that would be incredibly powerful
I think the whole concept would scale up really well to a tablet-sized device. Even a fold-out tablet would be interesting to see done this way.
hope Samsung copies OP Open and Open Canvas. and hope Open Canvas comes to their OnePlus Pad!
Me too. I remember seeing concept videos in 2009 from UI design firms about having multiple programs of various widths, side by side in a long ribbon you could move between. It's taken a while but we're hopefully finally approaching it becoming a mature UX paradigm.
As Milk says some multiple-desktop implementations have had a similar feel for a while, but that kinda forces you to do everything in full-screen apps or manually tile your windows.
I do think floating windows is not the best approach on a touch screen, but the fact this supports multiple widths is huge imo. Not every app needs to be full screen. But a single width for a column mode doesn't always work either. Having as many side by side as can work depending on the app is an obvious step. And getting it working without a bunch of setup before-hand is key.
I hope this starts a price war among the manufacturers and we can start seeing foldable reach the 1,200 dollar price range within the next couple of years. Or even hopefully sub 1,000 dollar versions. I mean we're already seeing it with Motorola razor 2023.
Maybe not that far. Honor already priced their downgraded foldables with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 under $1000 in China.
@@leanlifer exactly, 1000 is already a realistic price in China, it's crazy how overpriced foldables are in the west
The $600 Motorola Razr says hi.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M I literally pointed out the Motorola razor in my comment.
Bruh razor had been in the market for a very long time. They are flip phones not foldable phone
Michael is one of the very last tech CZcamsrs who is completely honest and reliable. Thanks for what you are doing.
I appreciate it, but I think most of my contemporaries are very honest and reliable as well!
@@TheMrMobile You are all class 👏
Bruhhh
OnePlus done a real good job with the Open. Just ordered mine.
It's an outstanding effort, easily my favorite OnePlus of all time.
Still using my Pixel Fold acquired through a T-MOBILE carrier deal.
I just got my z fold 5 last month. I'm really bummed I missed the one plus fold by so little time, but my last phone was totally broken and i didn't have a choice but to replace it right away. I will be looking to switch off Samsung for the wider outer screen maybe by next year though!
@@TheMrMobileI agree completely, it's a fantastic phone, great software, and fantastic build quality as well, I have a RAZR plus as well, as like your good self, I love folding phones
It's the best Foldable smartphone out right now.
As much as I love viewing the opinions of other tech tubers, I consider MrMobile is THE authoritative figure when it comes to foldables. His evangelism of the platform gave me the confidence of getting my own foldable, the Fold 5. I have never been happier with a phone, and I will find it hard to move back to the old candy bar design.
Thank you for taking your time, not just to be accurate in your review, but for such a great production of your reviews. You've become my go to authority on foldables and continue to put out fun and accurate information
Man, this might be the first android phone to pull me away from Samsung. I've been a fold user since the fold 2 but am about 85% sure I'm going to trade it in for a preorder of the Open. The regular sized front screen is enough for me, but the lightweight, brighter screen, faster charging (I don't use wireless charging much) and larger inner screen. Some of the foldable software looks really cool, too. Great vid.
I thought so too for a moment. But Dex, Bixby routines, secure folder, spen and Samsung notes are irreplaceable for me at the moment.
I agree. I've had the Fold 2, Fold 3 and Fold 4. Have skipped the 5 and traded in for an S22 Ultra because all my Fold screens broke. I have been waiting for someone else to come along (with EU/UK availability) with a foldable phone with a proper front screen, decent multitasking and at least passable software. My OnePlus Open is ordered and I'm finally leaving Samsung.
@@adskee69 "all my Fold screens broke" how?? I hope it is a user error and not a reliability issue for such expensive devices.
@@BakrAli10 unfortunately not user error, I treat my phones extremely well. The first two developed small cracks down the fold. First it was just the screen protector, but after I removed it, on the screen itself. My wife had the same with her Flip 3. The third one failed completely down the fold - black fluid down the middle, also physical damage internally that could be felt under the display. 100% not my fault, spontaneous catastrophic failure. All replaced under warranty. And every time Samsung would send it away for a week or more, and wipe everything. Incredibly frustrating.
I love foldables but moved back to a slab for this reason. Highly unreliable. I don't know if the OP will be better, but I'm prepared to try it because the outer screen is so much better than the Fold. But this time I'll keep my S22 Ultra as a backup in case it breaks. OPs repair process won't be any quicker from what I've read.
@@adskee69 sorry for your experience. Have ZF3 since its release and no issue at all. The only thing I had to do is replace the internal screen protector once as it was peeling off which is $20. Even none of my folks rocking F3 o F4 have any issues.
The Open review I've been waiting for, from the tech tuber who loves all things foldable! This device is looking very promising. Thanks Michael!
Nicely done! I love all the photos! Especially of all the tech guys and family..
I used to not think much about wireless charging, but now that a lot of cars support it, I think it is a should or must have. Jumping in your car and plopping your phone down when you are in a hurry is just too convenient
Or you can take the extra 5 seconds to plug in a cord 🤷♂️
Exactly.. I got 2 year old model this year and it has wireless charging pad and my current phone uses it nicely
I really dont care about wireless charging. I got my dad a 14 pro max and showed him wireless charging. He seemed impressed for a few minutes, then just plugged in the wire. Its not a deal breaker for most people.
I have the feeling they've tested it and found out the due to the camera bump most charging pads will have a problem charging it...
@@ThomasTheTankEngine22agreed
As a person who had the first generation find n until a few weeks ago, I'm incredibly excited for this device. It was difficult to get a hold of the find n, but I absolutely loved it and only ended up getting rid of it because my routine changed in a way that made the China specific software quirks annoying to deal with. To see that the design of the device is gorgeous, the cameras work just as well as I loved on my find n, and all of my favorite parts about the software are carried over, but with the more annoying parts removed, I am absolutely going to save up for it. It's literally the perfect device for me, even in hardware since I don't really care about wireless charging (I don't know why but even on devices I have that supported. I prefer to use wired charging).
An additional note, I used it that entire time as a heavy user, and a rhythm gamer who is hard on my devices' screens, with no case on the device, and the only damage to it was some scratches on the back that were fairly deep because I used the phone in a ceramics class and ended up scratching the back glass with fired ceramic by accident. The hinge is no joke, holds its own really well and prevents the inner screen cracking since it's a tear drop, not a crease.
Fantastic as always, Mr. Fisher!
Love the detailed impartial analysis that doesn't feel overwhelming.
This was the video I’d been waiting for. The king of the foldable phone world. Did not disappoint, looking forward to seeing what it’s like to live with compared to the Fold
The last point on Samsung being complacent is something I definitely agree with. I *know* that they're capable of a lot more than this so hopefully we'll see something more exciting from them soon.
yea, I hate how people say they're just playing the safe game when I think its just them cheaping out on r&d. Yet they still keep the hefty pricing.
14:00 that's the sentence I've been waiting for since the inception of foldables
7:10 peeped the brew 8-bit watch on your desk. I see you have good taste in more than just phones
I said it once and I'll say it again, Mr Mobile is the most complete tech reviewer out there: class, delivery, voice, charisma. Hats off👮
Great review as usual. One additional observation about the lack of wireless charging. When I sold my Oppo Find N2, I was pissed that Swappa knocked my phone out of the pristine category simply because the usb c port showed normal use micro scratches. A small detail, but one that could cost you a few hundred bucks if you resale after a year or so like I do.
I can see it being common to only wirelessly charge for the resale value in the future. Which is an ironic price incentive, since the extra heat from wireless charging definitely stresses the battery and circuitry more than a few tiny scuffs around a charge port. But as you say, it's all about the cosmetics.
Your foldable reviews are the best!
Love the anchorman reference at 0:58! 😂😂 Another awesome review!
This is definitely my all-around favorite foldable as of right now. I got the OnePlus tablet and I'm enjoying the crap out of this thing. I'd much prefer to use it over my Galaxy tab S8 Pro and really enjoy how you do the split screen I just sliding your two fingers down the middle
I have a OnePlus 7pro since 1'st week was launched in shops. I have absolutely ZERO reasons to upgrade......
Is still a rocket! And value for money is unbeatable..... 😂😂😂💪
I'm due for an upgrade on my Flip4, which is now damaged unfortunately. (Manufacturers issue I'm trying to get fixed.) I still have no idea what to choose. But your videos helped me decide on the Flip4 a year ago, because of how concise and informative they are.
I'm planning on getting some hands-on time with my considerations, but I am 50/50 on a flips or folds at the moment. Both have pros and cons. After my Flip4 though there's no way I can go back to a regular phone. Foldables are the future and I love them.
Good to get your review on it. Foldables are still too expensive for me to step into but it might happen someday and I'm glad you'll probably be reviewing every model that comes out :)
Thanks!
I'm glad to say you're one of the top 3 phone reviewers I always look forward to watch.
Amazing content as always. 🔥
Many thanks!
Good job as always Michael. I pulled the trigger on the One plus Open and got $270 off as well as an additional $60 off in deals. i got their tablet for $347 along with the free buds and 100 watt charger all for $2030. Not a bad deal. I have to wait until the 27th, but that works. I look forward to it. Keep up the great work.
What carriers will it work with? I live near Illinois/ Wisconsin wondering what carrier it will work with?
@@GrupoSentenciadeWKGN, It should work with, at least, T Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. I don't know about the others, but I would be surprised if it didn't work with Mint and some of the other smaller MVNOs as well. T Mobile for sure though as that is what I have.
This is just awesome, thanks for such an amazing work Michael!
Still the best phone reviewer on youtube. Covers ALL the aspects while the others only talk about the design and the cameras. Thank you, for being awesome, Mr. Fisher !
Purchased. Managed the get it for $750 after trading in the Razr Plus.
I really like Samsung multitasking already but this implementation looks amazing. It does look like it requires some getting used to but makes me like it even more.
Anything new that you've never tried before requires getting used to. That's how you learn and build muscle memory.
Therefore, that's a weak argument for anyone hesitating to buy the OnePlus Open just because of it having additional OPTIONAL multitasking features.
Your videos are so relaxing and very informative!
The look, sound and info provided in this review is other worldly! Well Done, Mr. Mobile! 🙂
Im watching on my OnePlus open😊
How to get that live wallpaper? I m using also open.😊
The problem with the trade in is it takes away your backup plan for if and when the foldable breaks. It feels like trading in your water bottle for a single use pop can. Sure the pop is more exciting, but water is safe
Yes, I am like you. I keep my old phone as a backup that I stick a data card in and use for satnav and music. If I have a breakage, like when I broke my Pixel 7 Pro display, then I have a secondary device to jump to.
I'm in the tech minority but I have a really old phone that doesn't work that I'm trading in for the $200, then I'm selling my current phone (P7) on eBay, and I still have my P2 in case anything goes wrong.
So if you have 3 old phones this works well in your favor ;)
More and more people have a backup phone nowadays.
It's even smarter to have a backup phone if you're buying a foldable phone.
Love the hardware! The circular camera lens, the vibration slider, IR blaster, and the size. Perfect
Michael speaking to Jean-Luc Picard like that!!? LOL love the fandom cameos!
Which wallpaper app is running in background?
I won't to know 2 :)
This gadget will be Killer when 2nd gen comes out😮😮
I love watching your videos. Soothing, cinematic, story telling, looks like a movie intro… your reviews are incredible different and I love your style.. keep giving up your good content🎈❤️❤️❤️
The bath clip at 2:45 really was the best at what Mr. Mobile does.. I’m sure he looked at every angle, every element of that wash.. and the background music throughout the video got me dancing a bit.. totally made me forget what phone he was reviewing 😅
Not a good sign that review units' screens are already breaking. The early adoption risks have always been there. Ver 2.0 of this device will have my interest if Fold 6 doesn't have a built in S Pen silo. Thank you One+ for the added competition.
Have been busy building this review for several days straight, so haven't seen other coverage. Shame to hear about that. Just MKBHD though so far, right?
You realize this is every folding phone? The Fold V had the same issues and every Samsung fold has had blackening down the middle. Half of the people I sold them too at my last job always came to do an early upgrade or to do a warranty claim. Heck had a customer whose screen that blackened after 1 week after getting it and Samsung told them to get lost. Felt bad for the guy for an $1,800 dead weight.
This has happened on a much larger scale for the Galaxy Folds and is a major issue. I saw that one reviewer had two Galaxy Folds and both had to be returned. There will be issues as foldable are still risky.
@@TheMrMobilefingers crossed that MKBHD'S screen issue was an outlier defect unit! I'm really hopeful on the open as it's the first phone that has excited me from one plus in over 4 years since the 7 pro.
Great review! I like the outside look of the open. That crease on foldables still drives me crazy. I know that is just a given for foldables, but if I'm paying almost $2K for a phone I don't want a ravine running through the screen. This is even weirder because I loved the surface Duo series. The two separate screens didn't bother me, but a single screen with a crease does. I know it doesn't make sense.
It makes perfect sense. I saw the crease in every shot angle. No thank you.
Your productions are simply out of the world. Pleasure to watch
On the photo at 10:19 inside the restaurant, there is a MASSIVE image quality improvement of the OnePlus over the other two phones when you look at the ceiling's suspended lamps and the way the highlights were perfectly recovered, and are not blown out unlike the other two phones. Also, the natural bokeh is much better and the overall image much more film like without over contrast or sharpening.
The review I have been waiting for as you are a foldable user. This is the OnePlus device I've been waiting for. The camera is impressive in your review and you covered all the key points. Aftercare support and service like you said is the only issue for me especially with a foldable. Samsung has got this part right with experience centres which do repairs in-house and sometimes on the same day. If OnePlus has a good system fir this then I'll consider it for my next upgrade. I just hope they bring the black colour to the UK soon.
I pulled the trigger on one but very skeptical it can replace my 1tb fold 5. Other than the outer screen im not overly hopeful lol. Was waiting for your video to drop since you are the formost expert of all things foldable!
Man Michael, you hit the spot every time. My Tony Stark under the phone reviewers. Your style, opinion, so honest.
Love the quality! Keep it up and keep taking your time for your reviews.

This was a great honest thought sharing video. Kudos
I was just waiting for your review, you are great.
Thanks for mentioning call reception. Barely any reviewers ever mention that in their reviews for pretty much an essential feature of any phone.
Thanks as always for your comprehensive reviews! I've been holding out for a viable non-Samsung upgrade path into Foldables from the Note 9 I'm still clinging on to (still a great phone, even years later!), and this is looking pretty compelling. The stylus will be missed though, and of course RIP to ol' boy Jack...
Might still hold out juuust a bit longer though to see if Pixel and OnePlus will overcome some of those first-gen niggles with their respective "Fold 2"s.
Man what a review , great as always but where is pixel 8 review waiting for that one
Best channel in the world for fold/flip phone reviews. PERIOD. Michael we love you!
I gotta say that this MrMobile review of OnePlus' first foldable was a great one!
Oh, and it's really nice to know that some of the other tech bloggers are featured in this awesome video review!
What a perfect review ,could not be better than this explanation of every details, will go with pixel fold thank you
“I just _love_ classic twenty-third century design; black finish, silver highlights…”
I really enjoy your reviews, there a must see before I decide on purchasing any mobile phones. Great job Mr. Mobile!
Michael, I bought the OPPO find N 2 based on your review and just pre ordered the Oneplus open for my wife's birthday. Thank you for the awesome videos!
Legit one of the best places for CZcams tech reviews.
That reference to Mad Men in the video title - awesome 😂
So pumped for the pixel 8 pro review!!!
This channel is the most professional and most well done ive seen and ive watched everyone. Youre my go to for mobile phones especially my beloved motorola.
This is the one tablet style foldable I would consider (besides the OPPO equivalent). I generally prefer the flip style phones but that multitasking interface is just so well thought out
Thank you as ever Michael!
Awesome review as always. Michael never disappoints!
Great to see more competition in the foldable space! Wish I could see these in person at T-Mobile
Nice work as always
Great video and great phone! I got to test it a bit in OnePlus event here in Finland this week. So great phone!
Always great review MM..... Ordered my Open at launch.... Keeping the Fold 4 as the secondary device
Super quality pictures and video , thanks
I'm genuinely excited to see this phone come to market. I feel like foldable need the stylus to be complete. This one having a great set of cameras is what I wish samsung would bring. I'm holding onto my Fold3 until good cameras AND stylus arrive together.
Never been a more easier choice, new Mr mobile video or...nah no other choice I'm already here. These videos are just pure ART
Great review, Micheal
I hope your pixel 8 (pro) review(s) will be online soon, too! 😉👍
Really glad to see foldables getting better and better. Now, if only the price could keep dropping as well :P
Awesome vid as always! My favourite reviewer
Yesss, the review of this phone I've been waiting for. Mr. Mobile the authority on foldables!
Well Michael you made us really wait for this one
The ONLY reviewer I’ve been waiting for to put up this phone for review
Hi Michael great review I just subscribed to your video's I was wondering what carries u can take to for service?
This phone looks amazing. I might even be tempted to upgrade to it and get my first fold. I also got a smile out of the “Jean-Luc Picard” call Easter egg. Cheers, Ian.
Excellent review, just found this channel. Just subbed 😂
I've been waiting for this review especially after your durability video.
I traded in my LGG8X dual screen (I'm keeping the LGV60 dual screen because it has 8K video).
I cancelled my Pixel 8 Pro order because I was only getting it to get the watch until I could trade it in one day for a Pixel Fold 2 with the hopeful inclusion of the same cameras... But that could mean being stuck with a plain bar phone missing my multitasking power usage I enjoyed having dual screen LG phones for the past 5years.
That being said, I feel the size is basically an LGG8X with the similar software functionality of the LGV60. Splitting screens with floating windows was very important to me.
I'm glad I waited because the One Plus was on my radar and I'm happy I ordered it with the blessing of you and the rest of the tech reviewer community. There were far less complaints over this than the Pixel 8 pro and the camera has finally lived to to it's name badge.
I ordered the Pixel watch separately instead.
The phone so awesome, it is probably the only one with sponsor at the end. Well done, 1+
Excellent review as always. Glad to see some more competition among the foldables. Have a great weekend.
Would also enjoy hearing your thoughts on the Fold 5 now after using it a couple of months.
Thank you for the video review! Fold 4 user here. As I commented on Marques Brownlee's channel, I'm wondering if the OnePlus's manufacturers screen protector on the inside is going to start to bubble up and come detached along the center crease. This is starting to happen to Samsung Fold phones and it happen to mine after 13 months of use. Thanks again!
Love your reviews! Whenever a new foldable comes out, the FIRST thing I do is check your channel! Love your reviews!❤
As a Fold 5 user, I want that multitasking canvas. And not just for my phone. I want it for my iPad and PC. How come no one has done this before? It looks so good and intuitive.
Interesting device, it has a lot more going for it than I would have guessed. The camera bump is obnoxious though, in my opinion. Cheers, Michael. Looking forward to Pixel 8 Pro full review hopefully?
I get mine tomorrow, I can't wait
This is some amazing review. When are you planning to review the Pixel 8 Pro? Pretty sure many of them are waiting for your review on this phone :)
I came here yesterday looking for this video and it wasn't here and I was like no way lol I'm glad it dropped today though.
Fantastic review as always Michael. Really really impressed with this phone. Perfect form factor to me and that black back... My god it's blackberry vibes all day long! The repairs offer a slight concern but... As a companion device or even owning a spare it may not be that painful.
Gotta say I kind love how skinny the Samsung fold makes it a lot easier to use and type one handed
Great video man!
What a superb review! Although I understand you are stuck with having the same home screen on inner and outer screens?
Michael Fisher the foldable form factor champion, brilliant review!
