I'm lit now yeeet
Lol
Even better Saurman hid his smoking habit from Gandalf like a teenager sneaking puffs behind his parents' backs. From _Unfinished Tales_ "Yet he dreaded lest this should be discovered, and his own mockery turned against him, so that he would be laughed at for imitating Gandalf, and scorned for doing so by stealth."
Those wizards sure know how. To party!
I could have sworn he was about to say "be sure to celebrate Bilbo and Frodo's birthday by smoking some pipe weed yourselves"
I honor them everyday. When I wake up, when I'm about to eat, when I'm about to sleep.
I smoke my pipe weed before every breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper all in the name of the shire.
@@captsploof for the Shire.
Oh I’m smoking some weed alright lol
It's tobacco, so.... 🤷♂️
Tolkien even wrote deep lore/story for tobacco? Incredible. Not surprising at all, considering his thoroughness, but still incredible.
Pretty sure he was just a fiend 😂
He himself loved smoking as much as Bilbo
So that's explain why Aragorn was smoking Pipeweed, an little nod towards his Numeronian side. And why Gandalf likes smoking it, because of his fondness towards the Hobbits.
Even the little things have great impacts. 💛
Saruman was just a casual user, keeping it on the DL.
I'm smoking up rn let's go
It's a small tidbit that just makes certain scenes in the movies even more better now lol had no idea until this vid that pipeweed originated from there. It definitely makes Alot of sense now . Would be nice to see the mentioning of it and how they bring some to Middle Earth (or at least a story of it later ) in the Rings of Power. They're going through with stuff like Mithril, would be nice to get a small nudge nudge of a showing of pipeweed being seen . Would make it an awesome transition to the movies Especially with the intro of Bilbo writing his book in LOTR fellowship of the ring extended edition about the Hobbits.
Saruman’s first experience with pipeweed was actually oregano. He never forgave Gandalf.
@@CantankerousDave Almost spat out my coffee. This explains a great deal of many things. Thanks for the laugh!
Fun fact: there used to be a local tobacconist in my area who sold blends with names based on Lord of the Rings. My dad, who used to smoke a pipe on occasion, said the Old Toby variety was the best. So that settles which is really the finest weed of the South Farthing as far as I’m concerned. 😉
The Country Squire currently sells middle earth themed tobacco blends. I think they are based on Mississippi.
- old Toby
- green dragon
- Rivendell
- second breakfast
- Kingsford
- bag end
Haha! That’s awesome!
Same here. I like the mithril.
@@tfritz92 their Old Toby is amazing!
We have some of that Longbottom Leaf, smokes like a dream.
Probably the best scene in Fellowship is when Saruman calls out Gandalf "Your love of the halflings leaf has clearly slowed your mind" and Gandalf just glosses over it, keeps talking, and never denies it lol.
Gandalf is a true stoner. He let's the foolish remarks roll of his back and takes another puff of pipe weed.
Does tobacco slow ones mind? No.
Marijuana does.
It doesn't slow me that much and it makes me happy! Like being that old, I would also do drugs all the time.
Yeah!! That’s a great line! Was just watching that part again last night 😆
@@TSVTheHive well thats bullshit 😂😂
Tolkien clearly defined "pipe-weed" as tobacco-like.... *But, as a stoner, I also loved how Peter Jackson always made it seem more like cannabis in the LOTR trilogy.
Yeah, especially the part where Saruman says "Your love of the halflings' leaf has slowed your mind" clearly refers to weed's effects on memory, not tobacco. I always liked this subtle change as well :)
In the Hobbit it is straight called tobacco.
I never liked that. It seemed pretty disrespectful, actually.
@@LemGray square as hell ⬜
@@DakodBleu 🤣somebody ain't a fan of them frosty nugz
For any fellow pipe-smokers, Tolkien's favorite tobacco was Capstan Blue, and C.S. Lewis's favorite was Three Nuns. And the Country Squire in Jackson, Mississippi has created several blends in honor of Middle Earth, including Old Toby, Rivendell, Green Dragon, Kingsfoil, and Bag End, all of which can be purchased online (I like Green Dragon the best).
Capstan blue is probably my favorite Virginia flake
Just smoke weed instead.
My favorite is Fruit & Nuts...a local blend
Happy Hobbit Day Matt! Thanks for all you do man. Pipe-weed is a simple yet fitting topic for the day. Cheers!
A shame thinking about it if Pipeweed did sunk along with Numenor and became an extinct plant when Eru Illuvatar deleted it from existence.
Bilbo and Gandalf wouldn't have a hobby that they can enjoy together when they have a good time in the Shire
If Sauron was chilling there before that he must have never smoked or the problems may have ended way back then
@@Peterkrack Sauron after smoking Pipeweed: Conquering Middleearth and creating it new with My own concept of order? Nah, I want more Pipeweed and a second breakfast.
@@JonathanGhost42 wait.... did Sauron EAT???
@@user-ni8ge9wo2b I dont know, but as a being that had a material form he probably could.
The real question is: Did Sauron poop?
"Smoke rises from the mountain of doom"...Sauron smoking some pipe-weed
It's utterly impossible to see artwork of the Shire and not have that wonderful Peter Jackson score swell up inside my head.
*Howard Shore score, but I still take your point.
Maybe Hobbits have such resistance to the One Ring because they're constantly blazed :D
Hey, all! Be sure to check out the rest of the Hobbit Day vids from some of my great Tolkien CZcamsr friends! czcams.com/play/PLBCsLcBwXZ_olx0ws0bTUsuGZTKRX7Y27.html
Happy Hobbit Day to you and all the Nerds that come with you 💚
Tolkien was an avid tobacco pipe smoker, especially enjoying Capstan Medium pipe tobacco (now sold as Capstan Original Navy Cut; aka Capstan Blue)…”the smoke of the burning leaves of a herb, which they called pipe-weed or leaf, a variety probably of Nicotiana.” When Merry and Pippen opened that barrel of Longbottom Leaf, those were some glorious tobacco leaves. :)
When i was young we would get our hands on Capstan Navy Full Strength, they're the strongest cigarette I've smoked in 35 yrs
@@sirfairplay9153 wow, I bet so! I don’t smoke cigs, but I do still enjoy the relaxation of the pipe, and pipe tobacco tasting.
I grew my own tobacco last season and named one Old Toby and one Longbottom leaf, 2 different fermentations.
The cultivation of good tobacco is just beginning once you have harvested it. Tobacco, once bought by business is washed, dried & then aged in controlled environment for at least four years before packaging. Producing fine tobacco is as involved a process as making fine wine.
I smoke pipe tobacco and have bought all the blends I can find that have LOTR inspired names. I’m a sucker for them. Fortunately most of them have a nice room note and taste delicious.
Matt I loved this so much! I learned so much about its history that I had no idea about! Like Numenor history. Amazing info and history! Also, loved the music timing. Great video my friend!

The fact that you drew the greenway in blue just will not let me sleep
Just got back home from my adventure to the longbottom dispensary myself. Perfect topic at the moment.
We always appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos. These videos are awesome. Brilliantly made. We know it takes a lot of time and hard work to make these videos.
As a bit of trivia the pipe tobacco used during the LotR movies was PS24 Nougat by Peter Stokkebye which is a bulk aromatic tobacco still readily available today. There is a podcast episode on Pipes Magazine Radio Show detailing how Brian Levine figured out what Sean Astin wanted and had a pallet of "pipeweed" delivered to the set in New Zealand. There are many tobacconist across the country who carry offerings meant to mimic the tobaccos of middle earth. Some of the best are from the Country Squire in Jackson Mississippi along with the limited edition tins from G.L. Pease who had blended everything from "Aragorn" to "Smaugweed" along with a "Balrog" blend and even "Shelob's Lair". Many if not all of these are English mixtures featuring Latakia which can be quite pungent. Clearly Tolkien was an avid pipe smoker whose tobacco of choice was Capstan Blue when it was produced by W.D & H.O. Wills. In 2013 the Mac Baren company revived this all-Virginia blend and it's still available today. I'd be remiss if I failed to mention Doctor of Pipes, Mark Irwin's 2012 book titled "Pipe Smoking in Middle Earth" which highlights every account Tolkien ever penned regarding the subject which actually spans about 112 pages. If interested I recommend checking out some of the content on @Hobbiton Piper 's YT channel for some additional information on the subject. If you decide to pick up a pipe and try it for yourself just remember it similar to a cigar in the fact that you don't need to inhale...also Tolkien probably wouldn't want you to. :D
Thank you for making these , love everyone you post something new ❤🥰🥰🥰
my love of the halfling leaf is currently addling my brain as i watch this
Love the video, my friend! Always a great teacher!
Happy Hobbit Day Nerd of the Rings very happy to see this video!
Great video Matt! 🙌
This was a cool one to see. Next we'll need to see one about all the different drinks in Middle Earth haha
Found this channel, Love this channel! Thank you!!!
"All that could be discovered about it in antiquity was put together by Meriadoc Brandybuck (later Master of Buckland), and since he and the TOBACCO of the Southfarthing play a part in the history that follows..." It's right there in the concerning pipe weed section of the prologue
he meant that wacko tobacco, he couldn't write about marijuana, as it had just been made illegal in 1937. Which makes more sense, think about how much the hobbits love food and drink and they walk around barefoot and love nature. THEY'RE STONER HIPPIES, you dimwit. They eat like ten meals a day!
Thanks Nerd of the Rings! Happy Hobbit day 😄
Yooooo the thing I wanted to see on every channel where people smoke weed thank you so much nerd of the rings
This was a very refreshing video!❤️
Thanks for so much fun!
Nice of u to shout out other channels. We are all geeks and nerds and should be one in our love of Tolkiens universe.
Longbottom Leaf, Old Toby, and Southern Star were all available at the South Farthing Dispensary
This is beautiful. I shall light up a big bowl of Old Toby in celebration! 🍁💨
This is so fun and wholesome! Thank you 😁
I never knew about the star leaf. So much detail about the history and interactions! Youve really done your homework. Now Id like to see you do a video on the elf wine distribution. Especially in Mirkwood.
Great video!
Thanks for the video. Very informative! Happy Hobbit Day! 😎😎
Great Topic!!
You're love of the halfling's leaf has clearly slowed your mind.
this is always one of the best days of the year 🙂
Great vid you should do more vids of other crops, items and weapons or buildings
Was not expecting this😂 awesome!
Bilbo's birthday is on the equinox this year? Happy equinox!
And happy birthday, Bilbo.
Star-shaped, Hmmmmm.... that made sense.
Also, thank you for this video, the more I learn about Middle-Earth, the more I realize how much I don't know.
Happy Hobbit Day!
Well, tobacco won't have you crave for a second breakfast, so it's all up to your imagination 😉
The “Old Toby” reference, and him being Tobold the Old, always spoke to “tobacco” to me. Any stoner reference is just that ..stoner stuff
I like noting Saruman's hypocrisy! Happy Hobbit Day!
Love it, for the Hobits!
Thank you.
I am a smoker (Marlboro Red cigarettes), but I recently purchased a LOTR style pipe at the Bristol renaissance faire in WI. Although its still not a healthy recommendation, I will say that it is MUCH less harmful and also much more enjoyable than cigarettes. Its helping me really cut down on the harmful intake. If you're a smoker and you are looking to cut back but not stop entirely, look into getting a pipe. If you don't smoke though, don't start. Its pretty gross.
Happy Hobbit Day y'all
NotR, you are truly a scholar.
Enjoying some pipe-weed the now :) Love these vids.
I have disappointed so many people by telling them pipe-weed is just tobacco.
Well if you have child sized lungs like a hobbit a it’s probably enough to get a head high and get back to work
Its just like Tea and Covfefe, many variable contribute to each plantation having its own unique taste.
It's not tobacco; it's weed. You have to remember that weed had a terrible stigma for the last seventy plus years and so no one would ever admit that it was weed and they just went on fooling each other and themselves telling everyone it's tobacco but let's be honest, Tolkien would have never gotten this far if he was only smoking tobacco. If it was pipe tobacco he would have called it pipe tobacco but he called it pipe weed because it's wacky tobaccy.
@@NinjaSushi2 Nah, he smoked pipe tobacco himself. Tobacco has historically been called weed for centuries. It's a relatively new, U.S. invention (from the first half of the 20th century to be precise) to call cannabis 'weed'.
then stop calling pipe weed
it is ... or .. is. not!
hahaha
change the name!? . hemp is both ! a weed and more along the lines tobacco
AYE i have been wanting to know about pipeweed!
The irony of Saruman!
Love your content! Just a note that about halfway through you say a different age than is shown in the upper right (if it hasn’t been mentioned)
I always thought Saruman telling Gandalf to quit smoking it was hilarious seeing as homie bought so much he controlled the darn shires economy like AYYYY YOOOOOO how fly you wanna get my guy
Great channel
I thought about pipe-weed this past week and wondered what it actually was. Would never has guessed you would ever cover it. Here we are. Cheers!
I'm puffing on a bit of G. L. Pease's Blackpoint mixture in my Chacom pipe while watching this video. Have a relaxing Hobbit day, everyone! :)
So cool to see how much solidarity exists between Tolkien CZcamsrs. Lovely art shown here. It makes a nice change of pace from the epic fare and reminds of those warm, comfortable chapters that first drew me into the books. Happy Hobbit day!
HAPPY HOBBIT DAY
This proves that even Tobacco has a long and detailed history in Tolkiens writings
Ohh this is somthing I can get behind.
The video I didn’t know I needed
Glad to be one of the first here thank you for giving us so much lore for our beloved series
Yes! Extra from NOTR! They need more like hobbit day, so I can enjoy more amazing content!😁😁
I loves me some pipe full of the Long Bottom Leaf! Keep on smokin' it!!
It's the "Kings foil" that is the good stuff.
I work at a dispensary in Colorado and we have a strain called honey hive (now called honey hiker) that comes from a phenotype called LBL aka long bottom leaf...
Really guys we knew this needed to be spoken about...Good Old Toby finest in the shire.
Wonderful and entertaining... Thank you sir... ^_^
Brilliant
In the movies' it's Marijuana. Saruman made a reference to gandalf's enjoyment of the hobbit pipe weed affected his memory and judgement.
I almost made my own video on pipe-weed a couple years ago but it wouldn't have been on Hobbit Day 😉 Happy Hobbit Day!
For everyone thinking that it's pot just because it appears to help the characters "veg out", pipe and cigar tobacco have their own calming properties, that's why people smoke them. Definitely not as extreme as pot but in Tolkien's world, it would make sense that the tobacco is almost supernaturally potent. Hell, in our ordinary world, if you smoke a dark enough cigar or enough pipe tobacco, you can get pretty damn woozy.
Native Americans smoked tobacco for its mind-altering effects. Of course, that was long before Big Tobacco put their chemicals on and in it.
awesome
Very nice video
'Sweet galenas' was brought from Numenor & cultivated in Gondor for its fragrant flowers. A flower is not a leaf. The Numenoreans did not cultivate 'sweet galenas' to smoke its leaf. The common name 'Westmansweed' derived from its growing wild in Gondor - i.e. it was in places considered a weed - a plant out of place. It was Hobbits who cultivated the plant for its leaves to smoke in wood or clay pipes.
May the Leaf be with You!
Thank you for helping to finally put that debate to rest. Tolkien’s depiction of Hobbits were supposed to depict folk who loved the small pleasures of the classic English gentleman (sunny days, nature, gardening, tobacco, good food, warm fire, etc). Tolkien was a pipe smoker himself and relished in the classic English pleasantries in which tobacco was a large part of his culture. There is no reason to believe that he would have smoked Marijuana at all let alone insert it in his text.
What is Marijuana if not just magic tobacco 🤔
You are not sure about that.
There was an online shop that I ordered Strider's pipe and Middle Earth blend tabacco from. I don't know if they still exist. But I do enjoy the pipe tabacco.
This is cool
Lmfao thanks for the video man
In case not already spoken..JRR Tolkien is known to have preferred Capstan Blue Flake tobacco (still in production) and on more than one photo is seen enjoying Peterson of Ireland brand pipes. All I know is you can't read The Hobbit or TLOR proper without both in hand. Only wish Peterson would make [The Gandolf] pipe but apparently Vauen of Germany picked up the "paton" when Jackson needed props for the movie...they (Vauen) went all out and produced every last known lore pipe to spec & rustications using quality material proper...so yeah you will spend a good amount to aquire one or all. Anyway great vid! Smoke em if you got em! 🔥 🌬💨
Mae Govannen! 👋 Cheers on Hobbit Day 2022! 🍯🍻
Happy Hobbit day!!!

Wonderful video, Matt! What’s the name of the song in the first couple minutes of the video? It’s gorgeous.
Haha was just researching this last night
Never knew such a small thing could have such a back story! Awesome video.
I like the idea that Pipe-weed is the mary jane variety, something about hobbits getting high and having the munchies makes more sense. x'D
