Him deciding to sleep with Tav is still important though. It's the first time in 200 years that he has agency over who he sleeps with, even if it's for the wrong reasons.
Technically he has no use for hot chocolate as a vampire, but he does need all the affection one can get to heal from his traumas.

I love how he says it, like he's just trying to play it off. Like "oh, you wound me!" '....no, seriously....'
The way he tries to fake smile through it and offer that slight nonchalant chuckle almost hammers home that he really did feel hurt, but dare not show that. Playing with his hands while talking, it reminds me of self soothing that people tend to do in their body language, speaking of an issue that's uncomfortable to them. His body language speaks volumes that betrays his words.
I truly love to believe that when he says 'I love you' that there's a siiiingle grain of truth in it, and he only feels safe saying it because he's established that he's just throwing lines at you. But he feels it. He wants to say it, but he's never said it before-- not to ANYONE. So it's his way of testing how he feels saying it, seeing if he actually believes it, if he says it out loud, will it be true? Does it feel too soon? Does it feel right or wrong? And also... how do you react...? Gosh I love this silly vampire so much
The way I always feel about it is… he is lying when he says “I love you”, and has said the line before (thus his mockery leading up to the line). However (depending on how you’ve done your playthrough) , Tav has been showing their trust and care for Astarion, which is more than anyone has done for two hundred years or so. And so, the reason why Astarion sounds so airy and slightly shocked, is because while he is lying, he is (as you said) also being somewhat truthful. But because of the manipulation game (assuming you are playing a self aware Tav), Tav knows he’s still lying and calls him out on it (if you choose “you’re lying”). But I do love this scene, because it’s the starting point of everything.
He's sort of poking at it "Yes? No? How's it feel for me to say it... what's your reaction..." knowing he can go with "Oh ha ha, dahling, of COURSE I was playing about!"
He is carefully&sneakily testing his path ahead , like a normal rogue
I think this one has a touch of truth to it... but ascended astarion doesn't mean it at all, he's just saying whatever it takes to control you. When he's "joking" actually means it, but when he's trying to sound sincere, he's only manipulating you. Ugh his writing is so good...

This scene is so sad :,(. When you first let him suck your blood he ends up saying "Thank you, this is a gift I won't forget" which I think is because the only love/relationships he has known have been transactional in nature, but in this encounter, even though he says he wants to repeat his favorite lines at you and he got rejected, he expresses emotions outside of transactional love (i dont think he fully realizes it, but rather is letting his gaurd down)
i was honestly expecting him to throw a little tantrum or something but i never thought i would get such a heartfelt response. this was before he confessed he was using tav so i guess from this point in act 1 you can already see he has true feelings for them :')
And spoilers if you get his good ending in act 3, he will repeat that line "This is a gift. I won't forget it." What Tav does for him is very special.
Well, he won't forget the "gift" because Tav is the first humanoid he drank blood from.
@@ComedyLoverGirl Whats kind of sad is, Astarion only knows kindness from his childhood and after Tav meets him. and hes forgotten the kindness his childhood held. He doesn't remember his family's faces, he doesn't remember where they live, he doesn't remember his own eye colour, he doesnt remember a time when intimacy and warmth weren't completely transactional. When he says "I wont forget it" or "I wont forget you" it isn't really him trying to say it for US... he's telling himself not to forget it.
He is the kind of man who softly embroiders hopeful poetry to remind himself to keep carrying on in his own shirts. This is someone who clearly tells himself things to keep himself from forgetting, and to keep himself going. This is a self-affirmation on his part-of course he wants us to know what we do for him; how we treat him is special to him,but he has to tell himself its special, that its worth remembering because if he doesn't, it might slip away like everything else good has.
@@KirstenlyArt That's a very nice interpretation! I haven't thought of it that way but perhaps you're right. He was imprisoned and forced to repeatedly prowl the streets at night for prey for so long he forgot what he looked like and what colour his eyes used to be, and he intentionally tried to forget the people he seduced (he tries to play it off as he doesn't care, but it becomes quite clear it's because if he sympathised with them he'd be punished). So he was doing all he could not to let his old instincts kick in when it came to Tav.
I've seen different takes on the embroidery thing too. The words themselves seem to really play into the ostentatiousness of his persona. But I agree with the take that his clothes and his appearance was one of the few things he had control over and that got positive affirmation for him, so he took extra care of them. And that embroidery is therapeutic and may have been one of the only hobbies he could keep. Lol I saw someone else say their headcanon is that Tav and Astarion start a clothing and embroidery shop after the end of the story. That'd be so cute and it'd be a wholesome epilogue for non-ascended Astarion.
I try not to watch romance scenes cause I don’t want spoilers, but I know I’ll never get this on a play through cause I’d never reject this poor man

The little glance away at the end as he says “you, I’ll remember” is what does it for me. That’s such a great bit of character body language, having him realize mid statement that he’s not actually lying and that he does legitimately like Tav. You can tell so much love went into this game.
His body language and tone here is miles different than what he's shown up until then. If you reject his first proposal for sex, he seems annoyed and says you're no fun before telling you that you can keep denying your feelings because it doesn't matter to him anyway. He finishes by saying he's tasted you already (if you let him bite you) and that it's all he needs, insinuating that you're going to eventually want more while he already got what he really wanted from you. Here though when you reject him, he's already had that special night with you where he felt like he truly connected with you intimately and doesn't realize that he's not just pursuing you for his own security anymore. He could've just said you're being a buzzkill like he usually does if you don't flirt back. But this time he specifically mentions a broken heart instead and simply expresses his disappointment. He legitimately wants something more with you romantically and for you two to connect once again but doesn't know how to express that at this point in time besides sleeping with you due to it being the only thing he's done for the last 200 years with all his previous partners and having never really formed a romantic bond with anyone ever before. He even goes out of his way to say "I love you" to you completely unprovoked in a bid to win you over even though he knows you're going to immediately believe that it's a lie. I think he himself doesn't even realize that part of him actually means it. So when you turn him down, he's gobsmacked for a few different reasons. He's not used to rejection, particularly, rejection from someone he cares about. So he doesn't know how to handle it. His body language drastically changes and it's obvious even though he tries to play it off in his usual manner, at that point he's not performing anymore. Where he's usually very emotive and blows a lot of hot air in a confident manner, he becomes withdrawn, twiddling his fingers together, removing his gaze from you, etc. He's being his authentic self, struggling to come to terms with the fact that you don't want to take things further with him in his point of view. And because he doesn't understand his feelings for you or why he's so disappointed, he has to take a moment to compose himself from the shock of your rejection before wishing you a good evening.
Very fascinating to see his drastic change from the first time he invites you to sleep with him. What a difference one night makes.

You know how it's only when you say something out loud that the reality of the situation suddenly hits? I think that 'I love you' was Astarion's moment. He fully went into the bit and said it as a joke but I think the second those words were out, it started dawning on him. If you accept his offer, he can keep telling himself that it's all for manipulation and survival and it gives him more time to sort those feelings out. But if he gets rejected, he realizes that fledgling feeling and then it's crushed in the same instant. Maybe that's why his composure is a bit shaky right after. He is still saying 'rehearsed' lines but his real feelings are seeping through in spite of it.
When i first started playing, before we all knew he was traumatized in that way, i approached him as the guy that only wanted fun and no attachments, so when he started saying all these things it grossed me out.
Like i know you're only using Tav, please stop, pretending like that is gross.
I'm glad i was able to go into the unintended romance route blind. Seeing him open up and realizing hes a "player" not because its what hes into but thats what hes had to be for most of his life, that was crazy. I wish you could hug the poor man instead of ask for kisses
Actually there is a scene where you can hug him if you don't force him to bite Araj. His reaction to it is so simultaneously wholesome and heartbreaking. Poor traumatized beb.
You can hug him! I friendzoned him in this way, you say something like “you don’t need a lover, you need a friend” you hug and he says he’s never really had a friend and he’s really grateful 🥺
This was also how my first playthrough went. I was undecided on who to romance, and the only one even remotely interested was Astarion. But I knew from an insight check that he was not being sincere, so when he seduced her I was like "he's gross, but hot and charming and she's probably drunk so why not..." Then I got sucked in by the way he was so sad when talking about his scars the next morning. I thought it was clearly a bad idea, but I was really taken by surprise in act 2, and the act 3 scene was just so beautiful. Ended up romancing him again on my second playthrough with Durge and that was even better ❤️🖤.
You can also hug him if you ask if all those nights never meant anything in the confession scene. There might be a few options in between to get there which I don't remember, but you can look it up
Or asking if he wants to cuddle before you go to sleep during long rest... wouldn't even mind if it was the exact same scene every time... Or no animation for it even except him agreeing to it. Currently it all has to play out in your head or in fanfictions. Thank god for fanfictions.

I'm not seeing anyone mentioning it, but when he said "I want to die all over again, with you" that's a sly metaphor for orgasms, in French the term for orgasm translates to "a little death" so, uh... teehee.
I wondered if people picked up on this as well! He actually references it directly if you choose the "This had better not mean 'I want to kill something' " dialogue during the party scene. I didn't the first time, and I nearly keeled over when I heard it on my second playthrough.

If you say it’s a little soon he says really gently that it could be true if just for tonight. Sigh! No one seems to take that option. But he says it kind of earnestly, like that’s what he wants but he’s afraid to ask.

I wonder if you can continue the romance from here. Like from a roleplaying perspective I can see a worldly Tav who's good at reading people and sees through Astarion's initial shallow praises but goes along with the flirting 'cause 'hey, my life can end any moment in a horrible way so I might enjoy everything while I'm still here and I could do much worse than a really handsome elf'. Then, after the plot advances and you find more about the artifact and turning into a monster is not such an immediate threat, Tav decides to end their 'doom flings' and gets this response and sees that there was more there than shallow flirting, at least now if not from the beginning and gets curious and wants to peel back that charming facade and things grow from 'I want to see what makes this man tick' to I want to give this man all the love and care in the world'
@@Yagamidetectiveagency This is exactly what I did in my blind playthrough. My Tav really considered the first night a one-off thing because that's what astarion said it would be, and we'd JUST gotten the news from [spoilers] about Gale's storyline so my character was like "Now's not really the time, maybe later." and then my Tav was kind of blindsided by Astarion confessing he caught feelings after my tav stood up for him withthe blood alchemist scene.
@Rathdrgnknight now I'm just imagining turning him down here and him being disappointed only for TAV to push for sex after the alchemist scene. That would a whole new meaning to "this all just a game to you isn't it" like he realizes he's just something that TAV flippant chooses to use when the fancy crosses them.
After the first night I asked why he seemed so distant, and on the second night I chose "but not right now". I can't imagine what could happen when my durge is good and chaotic.

He looks like he might actually cry...I don't think he will. He doesn't really like sex to begin with, so him being sad and not getting sex tonight sounds very unlikely...but he did do a good act. The way he averted the gaze, looking up...I did think he was gonna break into tears.
If ur romancing and get the “we need to talk” confession tav can ask him about “those times” with them specifically and he says it was different with them that was the problem. He just has issues where he associates it with Cazador and is not fully comfortable he needs time to work through it essentially. By the end of the romance he is able to overcome these issues and says he’s ready to live again and have a relationship with Tav where everything is on the table and not be celibate anymore.
It’s not about the sex, it’s about the intimacy and protection he craves. And the fact that he caught feelings for Tav and the rejection genuinely stings because of that.
No, sorry, that is not an act when he is caught in a genuinely vulnerable position. Astarion would never fake almost crying, because Astarion was indoctrinated by Cazador to think of "showing weakness" as "pathetic". Astarion is always using his facade to appear aloof and dominant, to shield himself from feelings of vulnerability. When he covers up his feelings with some sassy quip despite being hurt or by lashing out with sarcasm after being humiliated, _that_ is when he is acting. Accusing Astarion of lying when he _does_ show vulnerability -- or mocking him when he is genuinely distraught -- is doubly cruel. His "Have a fine evening, dear", _that_ is Astarion slipping back into his facade, pretending not to care.
Astarion does crave human connection even if he hates admitting it, as he fears being rejected and cast out (as the Dark Urge's butler bluntly states); Astarion simply forgot how to make connections without sex as he erroneously believes people could never possibly want to be with him for reasons other than sex (again, straight from the Dark Urge's butler's mouth if you romance Astarion as Dark Urge).
And Astarion doesn't _hate_ sex, he is not asexual, he says that very openly... he just hates being _forced,_ being _used_ for _other people's_ pleasure like a toy.
@@TF2CrunchyFrog ya the issue is he hasn’t had consensual sex in 200 years let alone with any level of intimacy, so this is uncharted territory for him. There are several conversation trees where he can reassure Tav/durge that the times with them are different the issue is he isn’t used to not associating it in a exploitative context so genuine intimacy is very difficult for him to wrap his head around. But by the end of the romance, killing Cazador he is free of those emotions and doesn’t want to be held back by him anymore and doesn’t want him to rule his life any longer, he is able to deal with it and even initiate it with Tav/durge so he’s overcome that. I think ppl who don’t romance him don’t have that additional context. So even after the first time when he is sad about the rejection he means that because that did mean something to him.

So many people fail to understand Astarion as a character and truly "see" him. If you know him, you can tell exactly what he's feeling, when he's scared, sad or happy. Most people only seem to take him at face value and don't truly understand his sass and sarcasm is there as a coping mechanism.
I would like to add that yes, he does enjoy sex, but he suffers from trauma and has no real life knowledge or reference on what an actual consensual romantic relationship is like.
That first night was very special to him, in many ways, it's such a shame that you don't get that dialogue unless you break his heart first :( (Which I could never do!!)
He also is definitely NOT "poly" like most people like to assume. He will refuse share you with anyone if he thinks you are in Love with another, he will dump you. ( looking at karlach and Shadowheart, Gale) The ONLY reason he "agrees" to Halsin is because he doesnt think Halsin is the kind who will steal tavs heart and steal her away from him, and he only "agrees" because he doesn't ever want to lose Tav.
If you ascend Astarion, the first thing he will do is turn tav so that he NEVER has to worry about losing them. "EVER!". (I love both non ascended and ascendant Astarion for different reasons) The fact that he actually lets you refuse to be turned (if he ascends) goes to show that yes, he STILL Loves Tav very much. - His "jilted lover" responses afterwords prove it even more.
There may come a time somewhere down the road where he Might turn a tav that's refused, but thats speculation and debatable ofc.
There is also a line somewhere where he says he will live as a long as Tav does.. So, one could also assume that even an ascendant Astarion would never do anything to that would risk him losing Tav. - This is not meant as a pro ascendant discussion, just more about how much Astarion Truly does LOVE Tav! Ascended or not.

No, as far as I know. You need to sleep with him twice for 'I-need-to-talk-to-you' Scene in act 2.
In my unintentional romance, my Tav slept with him once and then got to the confession in Moonrise. This was back in the first month of official release, so I don't know if anything has changed since then.
EDIT: That being said, I didn't get the chance to reject him to see if I could. With the timing and meeting Araj, I just never got the option.

Do you remember (or does anyone know) how to get that dialgoue in the beginning? It sounds like Tav slept with him at the party, but I've never gotten this! For me, it was the party scene in Act One and then I think a small scene in Act Two (after standing up for him @ Ajara) and then ofc the graveyard scene in Act 3. I just got to Act 3 since I'm late to the game but just wondering! I romanced him fine but maybe there's some dialogues I'm missing?

it happens if you triggered his forest scene before the refugee party and you will get this one instead at the party. my game bugged and triggered the forest scene twice and then this one, i dont know if its still possible

The beginning where he told you that it’s hard to not have fun with you.. and the joke with the broken heart, but right there the realization that this isn’t a joke anymore, not even a bit of fun.. the way he looked to the right in silence for a moment. 😭 Well if Astarion was thinking there isn’t a greater pain than the things Cazador did to him.. this Tav taught him another painful lesson.. dying of a broken heart wasn’t a joke right there it was a promise for eternity. 🥹

What is the best way to gain such high approval with him? I always have him with me and act in his favors......my Oc is a Durge
if youre playing as an evil durge its pretty easy, i had him at max approval before act 2 but there are other things you can do to get an approval boost like giving him the necromancy book in act 1 and of course letting him bite you and unlocking his first romance scene

I am always capped out to max rep by the end of act 2.
There are some other options you can do that raise his approval
Like helping they myconid colony, let nere kill the slaves (there's only a few anyways..lol, but dont do that if you are a pally with an oath obvs). Kill the short mushroom guy after helping him at the docks.
Be nice to ALL the Cats! Pet all the cats! (talking w/ animals is really a must have in bg3 anyways)
Talk to him Often! - Do his personal quests. Do these, you will have max rep before act 3 !
You do NOT need to be "evil" to gain his approval, no matter what others might say.

@@FranWest.Do you need to sleep with him early on if you wanna romance him? Cuz I've seen a lot of people say that if you reject sex with him (when you don't really know each other yet) it locks you out of further romance options with him
@@prnc96 - Depending on his approval - he will proposition you early, or at "the party" - If you refuse to have sex with him, yes, it locks you out of the romance.
I personally have never been able to say "No" to Astarion...LOL SO I'm probably not the best to ask :p.

How do you even trigger this dialogue?
You get it if you triggered his..ahem intimate scene before the goblin/tiefling party, this replaces the standard dialog.

Experiencing this from CZcams because of two reasons:
1. Having no money or time to go buy the game and the console.
2. I'd be too work/task/objective focused to actually think on romance at any given point. As in "romance was an option?" too focused.

I must say in his defense, if I reject him, i do that earlier than this video shows, in order to spare him the broken heart and myself any jealousy drama. So no biting, no sex etc.. I carefully avoid his romance triggers and still manage to be friends with him, drama free
And i daresay, it’s the best i can do. sex won’t really help him anyway, after all that abuse :P

You know it's a little bit different with fictional character. There's always a other run in the game or just reload save lol In real I doubt many would fall that easy. At least not me 😂 but as it's a game with many options...

I was under the impression he didn't actually care about Tav at this point, except for sex. He's very good at hiding his real self isn't he. 🥲
He is, if it's your first or second playthrough, but after well, let's say large number of playthroughs, you can read him like a book.
@@FranWest.agree. My first playthrough was a complete disaster in terms of Astarion. 😅 Now I can clearly see his cold eyes when he’s asking for the first tryst. His “indeed you will, my love” seems really desperate, not playful. 🙈 And in the 3rd act, when siblings came for him to the camp, and I just reloaded and clicked all the options like, I was stunned by his “I will become Ascendant” or smth like that. I went immediately “yes, sir, it will be done, sir”. So much life in this character! I just can’t let him go. 🙈 Could I ever?
@@selelebrin His first tryst lines differ on when they happen and how much approval you have with him. You can get his approval to "high" before "the party" and he will ask for the tryst quite differently.

@@FranWest. I’ve got them both. Right after killing the monster hunter (cold look) and at the party (saying lines). I become a line hunter myself now. 🙈 And I do too! Adoring him is so natural. 🥰
