Bow hunting with a homemade reflex deflex longbow: This is the bow I put together back in the winter/spring of 2015. I have a link to the build-a-long video below. It has a bamboo backing and ipe belly, is 68" tip to tip, and is currently rightly about 59# at 28" draw. I hunted with the bow a few times in 2015, but this past fall I used the longbow for everything that wasn't a metro hunt (where I needed my compound to pass sharpshooter proficiency tests) or a firearm hunt (My Wisconsin gun hunt is a longstanding tradition for me).
This coming fall, I will not be doing any of the city hunts, which will free up more time to hunt with a trad bow. A 68" tip to tip bow poses significant challenges from a tree stand relative to a parallel limb compound. It's certainly doable; however, there were certain shot angles I had to cross off the list completely. The bow I'm finishing up for 2017 is a 58" hybrid design between a longbow and recurve.
I hunted out of both a hang on stand and a saddle. This was my first season using a saddle to hunt out of. Moving forward, I will continue to use both the saddle and the hang on, as they are both specialized tools that have their own sets of pro's and con's for different situations.

Bravo man, hunting primitive is hard business and definitely makes "the trophy" a different ideal than a huge rack. I haven't made the switch yet but have been thinking about it this year.

I can't stand those videos that go through 5 minutes of brand plugging, 15 minutes of self indulgent interviews, 20 minutes of stereotypical bluegrass country music, just to post 3 minutes of actual hunt. I enjoy the raw stuff.
Benjamin Filbert agreed. Much like how my favorite documentaries are ones with mostly raw footage rather than lots of interviews, voice overs, graphics etc Just showing something as it is.
Great video. I love trad archery. Had my share of a few misses but that's the greatness of traditional archery. You can't let it discourage you. Keep practicing and once you connect, the reward will be so great. I finally connected after missing several times and the feeling of accomplishment can't be matched. Best of all in the trad world
Your relaxed methodical approach to hunting. Like a true traditionalist makes sharing your hunts wether you harvest a animal or not. Even your homemade bow with carpet roll tokin bamboo is awesome. Taking an animal with your own equipment thats graet

Great Video ! I just recently made the switch to traditional even though I have been an instinctive ( compound shooter ) for 20 years or so lol. I had to go to a 52" Bear Kodiak Magnum to feel comfortable shooting out of a tree stand. I give you a lot of credit using a 68" bow and almost 60 lbs out of a tree stand and saddle. I will be using a saddle this year too and can not wait, it should be a lot of fun. I cant wait to see your success with a traditional bow , I hope its a pope and young !

Fun video my friend. I am taking the ole recurve out this year. figure it ws time in my life to switch back to a more grass root style of hunting. I have made my own saddle and I believe it will work. This is my second saddle I have made,. Improved a few things hopefully over my first one I made. I am planning on saddle hunting some public land I have only visited in the years past, camped but only scout hunted it once. I Hope you have a successful up-coming second and keep up the great work of videoing your progress. I and and I am sure many many others are truly enjoying your videos. I will look more at making my own long bow for next season as well. I am still leaning on leaning how to do the as well. Just wanted take a minute to thank you for your work on the videos you've posted over the last several years.
Just last year I decided I wanted to attempt harvesting venison in my part of SE TN. I won't bore you with my movement into hunting, but having no background whatsoever, it was a lot to take in at once.
No luck in our archery season, for which I'm almost thankful. I still need some practice with my bow. But, harvested 2 spikes and a doe in gun season.
Your videos are a huge part of why I have a freezer full of venison as I type this. I'm looking forward to doing some scouting on canoe-accessable public land, and challenging myself further.
I'll continue to enjoy the videos you share, and look forward to learning more from your expertise! Good hunting!

when you hunt deer you see turkeys and when turkey hunting a deer comes in on you lol. Great vids you are on of the reasons why i'm starting to film my hunts so i can share the outdoors with others, in hope that someone would take up this great sport and enjoy the outdoors for themselves.
Really loved the quality of your video. I'm an old-timer trad hunter and have seen all of those deer reactions. I've also taken bear and deer with stick and string. The satisfaction is much greater than with a gun or compound. I see you were using a 700 grain arrow which seems very heavy for deer. The bow much be a heavyweight. I thought your videography was terrific and your manner excellent. I am now subscribed. Thanks for having me along.

Keep at it you'll eventually get it done. I wouldn't pay much attention to negative comments. Your best advice will be from guys that hunt with traditional bows. Trust me after you get the first couple on the ground it gets easier. enjoyed your video, good luck on future hunts.

It's fun! You should find a shop that carries them and try flinging some arrows. Even if you don't feel comfortable hunting with one, they're still fun and challenging to shoot at targets.

Traditional archery is great fun and a challenge, I started hunting rabbits and frogs first and then fish ,so when it came to deer and turkey it was much easier ,
I also used to throw soda bottles at random distances and shoot them in the off season , this is something those of you wanting to shoot traditional archery might want to try,just a random thought for you.

Close, but at least you missed it clean. I wasnt so lucky on my first attempt years ago and even though my right and left was dead on i was so amped in the moment i used my point on instead of gapping low like i needed to at that distance. Hit the back strap and haven't hunting with my trad gear since.
Going to give it another shot this upcoming season now that i have a few more deer under my belt and the buck fever has gone done some.
+sawtoothscream 1 I know how you feel. Last spring I called a turkey within 10 yards on the ground with no blind. I drew back and shot him with my compound with what I thought was a good shot, but I had to grid search for hours and never found him. I'm still not ready to go back to using a bow for turkeys, but I probably will at some point.
Good hunting video great job with the camera the footage was great. Don't worry about the miss it happens to all even with compounds. I've been there done that just keep practicing from the tree height you hunt the shot will fall into place. 700 grain arrow is really heavy for whitetail but if that is what you like keep at it.. Great video. Try a 400 grain arrow , flatter trajectory and will still pass right through a deer sized animal. I switched to lighter arrows many years ago and makes it more forgiving if you are off by a few yards on your distance calculation.
200 fps is just better than 160-170 fps

Hi Scott, I'll upload a video later this spring with more detail on the saddle. In a nutshell, it takes a little trial and error to find the best set-up for your body and style, but once you find it, the saddle is very comfortable. On an all day sit, I might shift from a sitting position to a leaning position once every 30 minutes or so, but even with my hang-on stand I still stand and stretch at least that often. I've fallen asleep in the saddle, leaning my head forward against the bridge. Glad to hear the projects have been turnout out well!
Great Vid not easy meal? little out of topic but what you guys recommend for ticks/bugs/and mosquitoes but also scent control, I realize that mosquitoes out north may not be a great problem on winter time for you, but here in SFL there're blood sucker all year... For mosquitoes around here Thermacells are quite popular. I also really like treating with Permethrin. The only problem with it is that I've found when I treat my clothes with Ozone it really reduces the effectiveness of the Permethrin, at least when I'm wearing only wool layers. Regarding Ozone, I built a $20 generator from a DIY kit to try out. I never had any experiences by which I can say that it does or doesn't work better than other methods.

Ruben Garcia hey I just saw your comment on here and the best things I've found for ticks is called Sawyer it works amazing I never have gotten ticks on me after I've sprayed my clothes down. You have to let the clothes dry but the Sawyer works amazing. Best thing is that it last on your clothes so you don't constantly have to spray down.

Haven't tried traditional archery yet but I noticed your hat brim was rubbing up against your bow string at full draw..something to consider in the future RE arrow flight. I assume it can't help. I know I don't want my compound bow doing the same. Good filming man. Keep it up.
+Addison Siewert Finding a hat brim short enough to clear the draw yet long enough to block the sun is a challenge. With this hat, the bill flips up out of the way if there's too much string pressure. I practiced with it quite a bit, and it's about the shortest bill hat I could find. The only real solution is a different string angle or a regular beanie and deal with the sun.

How many deer do you think you've missed seeing on quiet days while on your phone? I know i've looked up at points and had deer 20 yards or closer to me. They seem to come out of nowhere!
+Matthew Osten It happens every now and then, more so when it's windy or wet and I can't hear.
So I never hunted before but I am interested in starting to bowhunt. I knew that patience is a virtue when hunting but is it normal to go many days "dry" without a kill? Just trying to get my expectations in check.
+Alexandre Aubrey It really varied quite a bit depending on where you're hunting (public land near big cities with lots of competition vs. private land that gets little to no hunting pressure for example). Also, game populations play into it. Usually some years will be better than others. Finally, it depends on skill level and standards. For example, someone just learning the ropes will have a harder time having opportunities than someone with years of experience. That being said, the person with years of experience might be hunting for specific animals, which greatly lowers their percentage. For me personally, on public land, I would say I habe opportunities on "any deer" roughly 25% -33% of sits. Opportunities at larger, older deer are much lower.

I've been shooting the fixed crawl for about a year now on my recurve (and I believe you shoot a crawl too?). Do you use a range finder when hunting with the longbow? Or just give it a guess. I feel like a range finder is helpful when shooting the crawl but feels kind of wrong with the trad bows
+slalomnorth I don't use a rangefinder with the longbow. The way I look at it is that if I need a rangefinder, it's too far. This year I will likely transition to a 3 under.

Do you have a drone ? Some overhead pics or video might help with seeing the landscape in a different way.. I have a Phantom 4 that's real easy to fly & the camera is capable of 4k... If you ever want to come up towards the Brule river area LMK , I'd be more than happy to meet up with you & show you some areas where I hunt....
I do not have a drone. I almost bought a Phantom 3 professional right when the 4 came out because of the discounts, but I couldn't quite justify the price after I also bought the FDR-AX100 and Videomic Pro. Austin, the guy that most of the work for the recent How to Film series, has a Phantom 4. The Brule river area seems like a great place. I'll let you know if I'm ever headed in that direction.
Do you mind if I ask what type of work that you do? You seem to be pretty good with your CAD word and machining skills yet you're out hunting during the week. Vacation time? I love you're videos and you do a good job at making your hunts real and not just showing the highlights like a lot a lot of fake showtime boys.

The video was good, well edited and composed. I would suggest you stop watching the TV hunters and quit bleating at standing deer. There is no need to put them on alert, especially when they are already standing still. I don't even bleat if they are just walking. If you shoot while they are walking, they will rarely jump the string like that doe did. If you think you will have 20 yard shots, I'd shave 100 to 200 grains off the arrow weight. A 700 grain arrow will work fine at 10 to maybe 15 yards, but as you can see, they drop pretty fast after that, especially from a trad bow where they are starting at 150 fps or even less. A 500 to 600 grain arrow will do just fine without quite such a rainbow trajectory.
I certainly appreciate you trying to get it done with a bow you built yourself though. Kudos for that!
She had started walking again when the camera cut away on the draw. Hindsight is always 20/20 with stopping or choosing not to. Usually if they're within 10-15 yards I'll shoot on the walk, but further out I like to stop them. But then are are always exceptions of course.

I've noticed that a lot of you guys that self-film Shoot left handed.
If you're hunting with that longbow setup you shouldn't be shooting past 10-15 yards or making noise to stop deer. The setup is way too slow and you will never hit where you want due to string jumping . Nothing wrong with a compound . Not missing is fun!
You should have grunted when that buck was at 6 yards. Ghosting. He smelled you. You should have grunted drew in one motion and shot. It would have gave you the two seconds. Inside twelve yards slam dunk.

+westsidewil Main camera is a Sony FDR-AX100. I also used a Sony HDR-AS100 and Contour Roam2. Camera arm was Fourth Arrow, and mic is Rode Videomic Pro.
Thanks for the info. What other cameras have you used in the past? The camera you are you using, albeit does a great job, is cost prohibitive for me. Also, what do you use to edit your videos (mac, pc, software)? And again, great video!!
If you check through his other videos. He has a few videos on How to film hunts. They are older videos but give good tips and shows what he does with video editing.
+westsidewil I have used the Canon Vixia HF S100 and Sony NEX-5r for a main camera in the past. The Vixia S-series is still decent for the price you can sometimes find it used now. A used Sony AX33 would be another camera to take a look at. Similar to my camera but smaller sensor, a few less controls, but better image stabilization. In addition to my 3 older How to Film videos, we just uploaded 10 new ones recently if you haven't seen those.
+westsidewil Computer is a Windows gaming laptop running Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, which I don't think you can get anymore since they switched to CC. But it's much more than most people need. I don't have much familiarity using other softwares, but I know Power Director is fairly popular and used by some of my CZcams friends.

surprised you're not using a rock climbing harness. what happened?
snapcrack55 It's attached to my SitDrag saddle harness. I got tired of taking it apart and putting it back together each time I switched stands. So I just used the regular harness for the hang on and rock harness for the saddle. The rock harness still works fine on its own, but I'd need to buy a second rock harness for me to use it like that.
DIY Sportsman I am just surprised how anyone could be comfortable going BACK to to a regular harness. Thoughts?

snapcrack55 I already had it so decided to use it rather than spend more on another rock harness in the short term. That particular HSS harness is comfortable, but still has the standard issue of upper body draw mobility I had to work around. In the future I might get another rock harness or just use the saddle more as I become more conformable in it.

you need to switch to a rock climbing harness. dealing with a trad bow in a tree is already a pain. a rock climbing harness makes it a lot easier
+steveyd101 I actually used a rock harness on all the saddle hunts and a couple other hunts that didn't make the clip. For the most part, I kept my rock harness as part of my saddle and used a standard harness with the hang-on so I didn't have to go back and forth taking the saddle apart.
DIY Sportsman Nice. I can't wear a normal harness anymore. I also hunt nothing but public land (michigan) with a recurve. Some advice. Never grunt or make any sound to stop a deer anymore. Especially with skittish public land deer. You can't get away with it like you could with a compound. you are better off shooting while they are walking. the longer you shoot traditional, you will learn to time your shot.
That's an interesting idea. I hadn't even considered that in the case of such a slow arrow, stopping the deer could actually be detrimental.
Michigan deer have gotten so skittish that I've had them jump the string back when I shot a high speed compound. Its like someone throwing a fastball at you when your not expecting it versus being ready to catch it. The risk of hitting a shoulder is not as bad as how much a deer can move on the shot. Plus, with the right arrow setup, a shoulder hit shouldn't matter. The two deer I shot this year were on a slow steady walk (15 and 25 yards). I'm shooting a 700 grain arrow maybe going 170fps.
in fact I would say that you don't even have to lead them much. If anything, the sound of the shot is what will stop the deer from moving, and then the arrow hits them before they can even think about it (usually).

As I see, hunting with the camera and talking is something that you are doing much more better than shooting the bow or even the riffle. Perhaps you should consider to get the job in National Geographic or Animal Planet. Be the second sir David Attenborough.

Sitting in a tree stand shooting a animal isn't hunting, hunting is tracking animals in the woods and sneaking up getting in close and taking the shot, hunting is about stealth, accuracy, and out smarting a animal in it's own territory and earning your kill. I would never shoot a animal from a ground blind or a tree stand.
