I love the sound of the copper harmon mute. I just love how sharp and nasally it honks, especially while listening to some smooth jazz.
1:21 Harmon Mute with Stem
2:15 Halfway Out
2:32 without Stem
4:23 Straight Mute
5:51 Plunger
9:48 with Pixie
10:48 Bucket Mute
7:45 "just simple double-tonguing." Yeah, super simple!
Double tonguing is easy you just have to practice
Think hard G instead of the K sound and you'll find double tonguing easier to learn.
Fantastic demo & just what I was looking for as a composer to help me get more ideas for writing for trumpet and using mutes.
I really appreciate that you took the time to make this!
1 person decided to try this with a used plunger.
31 now. You shouldn't have spread the word!
@@nenissaK It's a neat way to recycle a plunger
Dude. Your Wynton imitation was spot on. Great stuff. Sending this along to all my trumpet students. Thanks a million!
I Love the Harmon mute! Omg😍
AMEN
Why do people use you tube to criticise people so personally for making an informative video. The guy is just trying to help other players. Get a grip!!!
Here is a highly talented AND good looking young man with a magical skill who has a very bad case of hairdon't. We care so much for him that we wonder how we could have helped. How bad could his hair have been? It is like looking at a beautiful and fragrant flower that someone has plucked badly.
@@goodcyrus : You miss the point if you think this is about his hair numb nuts!
Thanks Charlie, purchased the Copper and Harmon wah, Denis Wick Cup, H&B Pixie, Tom Crown copper bottom straight, seeking out a plunger to compliment Pixie. Returning to trumpet after some years, these videos are a tremendous help better than any tutor we had back then. Loving the cup and Harmon/ Jo Ral mutes, all the best!
I AM SO GLAD YOU MADE THIS VIDEO.
I love ALL your trumpet videos!!! Awesome work, Charlie Porter. Thanks!
Best tutorial style I've ever seen. Didactic and very clean!
Thank you ! Recently picked up my horn after 35 years to join community orchestra. I need all the help I can get and your explanation and use of the Harmon mute is very helpful! Your video/demonstration on Pedal Tones was great! I am encouraged and gradually hearing improvement in my range!
Amazing brass musician and teacher
thanks charlie. you are the man. this is super helpful.
Dude. You're a king!!
Voice of experience at 1:00!
9:04 Next up the Pixie Mute which is a Smaller Sized Straight Mute. It sounds like a Standard Straight Mute but pair that with the plunger mute and it gives the Plunger more of a Human Voice sound.
Hi Charlie. I'm new to the trumpet and your channel is a godsend and a goldmine! Thanks for making these fascinating videos so I can educate myself on the subtleties of trumpet playing as I being my quest to play better. Keep 'em coming! :)
Very informative and enjoyable videos, Charlie. Thanks!

Daniel McBr X dd reqdearty to
Thanks! Merci!
holy shit your tone is amazing
I am in an 8th grade band and using the cup mute for Low Rider by ZZ Top using that is so hard for me but you make it look so easy!
Really great videos man- I don't know if you've ever heard of Clyde McCoy, but he did some insane stuff with the pixie/plunger combo
Nice tone(s)!
I usually come back to this video, it is awesome. It could be great if you recorded another video on trumpet mutes but this time showing examples of its uses on repertoire both solo and trio (plus notations and little scores throughout the video) and playing of scales for each mute trumpet.
Yeah I used one for this jazz piece inband
This is exactly the video I was looking for. Great demonstration of the different mutes there are for brass. What mutes are best choice for very soft and warm backing lines during solos in a big band? Like some slow spreads… ? Thx
Just purchased trumpet and mute kit as well
Man you are awesome, I wish I had a trumpet right now :/
εξαιρετικό!
Thank you so much for this informative short video! Do you happen to have any suggestions on which brands to purchase/sound best for the Harmon mute? Thanks!
Playing the trumpet is so fun. I recently picked it back up after a long ten year break (ha) and forgot how fun it is. Only frustrating part is having patience to play those high notes again
Yes, it is
Even though this video was on trumpet must I used it to buy a euphonium mute great job mate
There's a Wee Zee Mute which is like a Stemless Harmon of some type.
Humes and Burg makes mutes for a whole Variety of Brass instruments including the Little Baby Piccolo Trumpet
Great playing! What trumpet are you using in this video?
i got a mute like your now its hard to blow, barely hear it, you make it so easy.
The Buzz Mute is a Kazoo attached to a Mute
Thanks for this amazing video. Sir, could you please tell me whats your mouthpiece? The sound is very good.
Thank you so much for the thorough explanation. You might put up a link for donations through paypal or something. I would definitely throw a few bucks in from one musician to another. Thanks again!
Hi Charlie. I hope you're well. You know you're old video on the trumpet mutes. Do you have the trumpet transcripts for those parts that you played? Thanks and all the best. Philip
I've seen in movies people use like actual hats for mutes like bowler or derby hats. Could you make a video looking into that?
I just read that the mute stem is a relatively new invention, so it couldn't have been used to make the "Wa-wa" sound by Disney orchestra in 1942.
Nice research
Thanks - actually insane amount of research. If I had that - writing would be a piece of cake. :)
That's a good piece of info. I know that Clyde McCoy used a pixie with a plunger, and I was wondering if he couldn't have just gotten the same sound with a wah wah harmon. Now I know why
The harmon mute itself was introduced before 1942. In "Instrumentation and Arranging for the Radio and Dance Orchestra" (1936) by Norman Ellis, it says "The 'Wa Wa' effect is produced by a Trumpeter using a Harmon Mute". However, the "stem" is not explicitely mentioned there.
Mutes and jazz tips
Great, but which one has the least resistance?
Hey I was just wondering - what song are you playing when you pull the stem out of the harmon?
Hi! I'm between Harmon Mute w/Stem and Adjustable Cup Mute. I love the different sound that Harmon produces but I find more practicle the Adjustable Cup Mute. Once I tried the Adjustable one and I felt the sound was little soft.
I usually play blues, jazz and funk.
Could you help me?? I don't now what to do!
Thanks!
Hi Charlie, great playing, your vidoes help so much.I have question tho..., I have been using harmon mute, however in some trumpet it gives me some off pitch (some bb some ##), somehow the centers are shifting, is there any special technique to use the harmon mute?
Soegi Hartono Yeah buy a JoRal bubble mute instead
Johnny Dunn invented the Plunger mute
Rhyming common with Harmon, only in America! Great examples though, inspiring.
hey, harmmon mute, the first one, is it similar of Tom Crown wah wah??
Do you not find the H&B pixie mute stops notes below bottom C from sounding properly? I find this very annoying!
This is an absolutely fantastic video thanks a lot ! What mutes do you actually play exactly (brand)? And btw, what trumpet do you also play?
He uses Denis wicker
Wick*
are u sure abt that ?
Yes I have the same
Cool, thanks man ;)
What size Bucket mute was that? 4" or 5"? Thanks. Was hoping to get a mellow effect like a flugelhorn, think it would work? 10:28
hey mr.porter if possible im a beginner on trumpet but i have a harmonmute and i would like some older songs that i could play if you could send some links for some songs would be goo the highest i can get is a 9
Where do you get that type of plunger? Can not for life of me find one that can be the same size as my bell.
Dat copper Harmon doe!!
Thanks lol, I'm trying to learn how to impersonate a trumpet mute XD
Hi guys, do you know how does he make the sound at 1.45 ?
Isn't Low Rider by the band War?
