The Airgun Show - hunting with a spring-powered airgun, PLUS the Benjamin Trail NP2 gas-ram on test

The PCPs take a back seat this week, as we dedicate an episode to spring and gas-ram airguns.
Mat Manning is out hunting with the spring-powered Air Arms Pro Sport and Tasco Target and Varmint scope at the idyllic Park Farm airgun holiday site. Grey squirrels and corvids are on the hit-list as Mat targets the woodland pests from a hide.
And we’ve got the Benjamin Trail NP2 on the test bench. Powered by the Nitro Piston gas-ram system, this break-barrel comes as a kit with a Crosman CentrePoint scope. See how it fares as Mat puts it to test on the range.

if a springer could cut it 50yrs ago, it will still cut it today....a rock could do the job, it is what you choose to hunt with. I love springers/gas rams, and hunt with some of the pcp users..both happy with choices, both successful hunters.

I use my Remington Express springer. It has a Remington 4x32 scope and I have it sighted in for 100-150 ft. It is quite accurate and death on pigeons stealing grain out of the chicken feeders.

Re. the Crosman's light cocking stroke, that is a 20 ft-lb gun in the US, so it's de-tuned a lot for the UK limits. I wish they made a lower power version that shoot well, but they're obsessed with magnums here.

It's nice to see a springer too! I have a Cometa 94 in .25. I love it, light and accurate, not to mention powerful! I personally will always prefer metal springs over gas springs. There's just something about that sound of a steel coil spring that makes me smile.

I just bought four tasco varminters brand new for 25 bucks apiece! Three in 2 1/2 x 10 and one 6 x 24. There must be a close out on them. I put one on my nitro piston springer about a week ago and sighted it in. Awesome scope and crystal clear. I bought a few other ones for spares at that price. They’re not rated for air guns on their website but a tasco rep told me they were. They have a lifetime warranty so if they do break they’re covered and at $25 a crack who cares! They are as bright and clear as my Nikon optics. I think I’m gonna put a couple of them on my rimfires and keep the 6x24 for who knows??? I see the high powered one is already gone from the clearance website and they’re up to 100 bucks again everywhere else. It’s not too much of a gamble imo for 25 bucks. I remember when they came out around 2000’ and were around $169/$189.

Why do you not think the safety in front of the trigger is not that safe/ or the best? Most of my rifles have that kind of set up and I really like it, I am in the habit of taking the shot then putting the safety back on straight away without thinking. But I am always willing to learn if it will make my shooting safer. Cheers

Ok. I'm trying to decide on a pellet gun for squirrel hunting. Is the gun spring powered or air?. I have a pump up air gun but it is ancient. Decided against the nitro powered piston based on short longevity of use before they fail. I assumed a "springer" meant a compressed spring powers the pellet. But I keep hearing springer air gun so where does the air come into play? And why air and a compressed spring?

Where I am in the South West, jays are very abundant - though being very secretive birds, you only tend to see them when you settle down and wait in the woods. They're actually more common than magpies on several of my shoots, and pose a major problem by taking the eggs and chicks of game birds and songbirds. They do look magnificent, but then so do magpies and woodpigeons. I try to treat all quarry with the same respect, regardless of what it looks like.

I want another springer and I have it narrowed down to the, Hatsan Torpedo 155 Vortex and the Hatsan Torpedo 100X Vortex. I want the .22 version and one is 1000fps and the other is 800fps. I have heard that anything 1000fps or over can make your accuracy suffer. I have no idea if that is true. I do know that more speed means more ft pounds of energy so I am not sure what to go with. It must be hard to be a hunter in the UK. You need a gun that goes BANG and game you could feed your family off of! Come to South Carolina sometime... We will set you up right!

+Shane Mullen Many British and Europeans have hunting shotguns and rifles, don't be confused. I am one of them, I got even pistols to be only used at the shooting range but shooting someone even inside your home... that's another story. Of course no concealed carry at all unlesss you're a police officer.

I was basically told that you would get in trouble for shooting an intruder if he was holding your dog's head in one hand a weed-sprayer full of gasoline in the other. I imagine it's hyperbole, but on a scale of 1 to 10, how far off is that from the truth?
P.S. You should still come hunting in America sometime, we have great game for hunting. I personally recommend Coyotes.

***** Absolutely true, we don't have any right to shoot any intruder. The legitimate and proportional self defense is just a legal theory, We would go to prison for any serious injure done to an intruder and our guns must be always unloaded and inside expensive grade III safe boxes. You don't have the safe box, you can't get the gun license for pistols and rifles.

Nice video, you certainly went through the trouble to get the hunting experience. A bit sad you couldn't bring a combustion powered gun, a simple .22LR would give you a bit longer range and killing power. .177 isn't a lot of margin but clearly your marksmanship skills were up to the challenge. Kudos!!

Should never cock a springer and wait to long...it damages the spring.

Grey squirrels are not native to the UK. They have almost wiped out the native red squirrel. They carry a pox virus which kills the red, and can overtake nest of birds and have been known to kill songbird chicks. Jays (plus any other member of the corvid family) are on the pest list mainly due to killing songbird also. Corvid numbers have multiplied because they are clever birds and have taken advantage of human activity which is to the detriment of songbird.

He needed to show himself shooting something to advertise that crappy scope, so a bird feeder was set up. Very far from how I hunt and shoot.

Hello great work :-) what spring air rifle would you recommend for under £ 150 and what is better 1.77 or .22 caliber for hunting thanks

Peter Ellerby Hi Peter. We were really impressed with the BSA Comet EVO and Remington Express - both of which we've reviewed in previous episodes, and both in the region of £150. Calibre is not such an easy one to answer. .177 is faster and flatter but .22 hits harder and, being more efficient, tends to result in a smoother firing cycle in spring guns. It really does boil down to personal preference - if you can, try both and see which you prefer before you buy.
