THEY'RE GETTING MODDED! 1981 Westinghouse & 1983 Dover at Sugar Land Medical Building

  • Filmed on August 17, 2018: Here are 2 of my childhood elevators in this local dentist office I used to go to that are biting the dust. There you have it! More mods coming along the way. I am honestly at the point right now to where I am getting sick and tired of these modernizations on my all-time favorite (old vintage) elevators that are happening; it's getting definitely old now. Anyways, on with the video. I had nearly forgot about this place that had 2 original vintage elevators from the 1980's since 2012 up until this year I've remembered, so I wanted to get a full HD take of them. First of all, I was mainly gonna film a high-quality video of the Westinghouse elevator until when I saw a wood cover with a swing door outside boxed around the elevator doorjambs right after I entered the building, I was heavily shocked! Thankfully, I got an HD take of the Dover which sadly is out of commission as of October 29, 2018. Here I show off an older video I took back in 2012 of both of the elevators on my DSC-W55 which sadly the quality is terrible because I did not have a good camera back then, but I at least have a video of the Westy in advance to show a preservation memory. As I stated in the video which you heard, these are 2 of my childhood elevators I used to ride when I came here for my doctor's appointment a VERY VERY VERY long time ago! I grew up riding both the Westinghouse and the Dover elevator. The downside of the Westy was that the motor was noisy according to my mom (it started with a jolt and vibrated when I filmed this in 2012), but the Dover ran better. I came here on November 2th after they just finished the Westy, which is now a SmartRise (video coming soon). Unfortunately, the modded elevator did not run good either as started with a big jolt going up and stopped SO HARD after going down! See, what I mean? This is the reason why I hate modernization 'cause the ride quality is horrible. The only good thing about the modded SmartRise that was originally a Westinghouse is that it doesn't vibrate anymore when going up. I bet that the SmartRise for the Dover that's currently in the process of modernization is gonna run just as poorly as the SmartRise on the Westy. I did speak to the elevator technicians who working on the elevators inside the facility if they could help me save some parts from the mod, but the building owner and chef engineer wanted to keep the push buttons and anything that's brass. But no complaints; 'cause already have elevator parts from a good amount of my favorite old vintage elevators (as I've just showed my elevator collection display in my previous videos recently), so why whine about it? Anyways, with that said, I hope you enjoy the video of my once childhood elevators that are on the chopping block.

    Update: I went back here yesterday afternoon and got parts from the Dover that’s currently in the modernization process! :D The elevator technician who gave the parts to me misunderstood when the building owner and chief engineer told him about keeping the parts; they actually meant the cab lights on the ceiling located inside the elevator car to be kept, not the elevator buttons. So a BIG THANK YOU to Oracle Elevator for saving me the Dover elevator pieces! 3 call stations & 2 directional lanterns. :D
    This came in out of surprise as I didn’t expect it.

    I’ve had a similar thing happen to me. I live in Austin and the dentist office building I went to had a Dover impulse with the chirp and it got modded with innovation universal last year. It’s glass and it didn’t effect me as much as this affects you because I believe the other buildings still have the original elevators which are the same as this one before it was modded and I like both vintage and modern elevators. P.S. the elevator was modded because it broke down a lot and the person I asked about it says it doesn’t break as often now .

    Why do they have to mod the elevators?
    That's it! I have had enough of modernizations!
    If they even think about modding another elevator,
    the elevator enthusiasts that like old elevators are gonna be mad!

    I have heard of Oracle Elevator before... I am going to say this again, building owners want to spend their money on elevator modernization and sometimes, they have to update the elevators to be up to code... I absolutely hate it, but I predict that there will be more elevator mods coming out next year... We just want to make sure that the people with disabilities can ride the elevators SAFELY and EFFICIENTLY without help...

      Confirmed Elevator Fatalities for 2019:
      Asheville City Hall, Asheville, NC (Manual Otises)
      Pinnacle Hotel Vancouver Harbourfront, Vancouver, BC (Otis Circle Touch Sensitive)
      Fairmont Empress, Victoria, BC (Otis Square Touch Sensitive)
      Hudson's Bay Store, Montreal, QC (Otis Circle Touch Sensitive)
      Congress Plaza Hotel, Chicago, IL (Modded but Funky Chicago, Westinghouse and Original Otis Square Touch Sensitive elevators)
      Chase Tower, Rochester, NY (The last 2 remaining Haughtons will most likely be modded next year if not the year after, but will most likely be sometime next year.)

      I'm not against the ADA whatsoever and I completely support it. What I do not support is destroying old and amazing elevators as they are literally pieces of history. If being non ADA compliant is a problem, just mod the fixtures in one of the elevators and leave the rest alone, or add a new ada panel but leave the other COPs alone or install another bank of elevators, but leave the originals alone. BAM! DONE! Perfect ADA Compliance, and the best thing is, the old elevators with their original fixtures still live!

    • @OPG2711
      @OPG2711 Před 5 lety

      Exactly!

    • @JimLiElevators
      @JimLiElevators  Před 5 lety +1

      Floridian Elevators Especially how they run just fine and barely have any problems, like the Fairmont Empress for example. The Menger Hotel installed a separate elevator located in the corner of the hallway in 1986 and left all the other rest of the old vintage Otis elevators from the 1949 and 1966 original! I can take an exception for why they needed to modernize the elevators at Pinnacle based on from what I’ve heard. The older elevators at Roosevelt field barely even broken down before they were ripped out, the newly installed elevator on the other side are already breaking down. Not even a year old at all!

    I have mixed feelings about ADA. Some parts of it nice but others are annoying. Elevators should only be modded if they are a safety risk. Vintage elevators are more reliable and safer then the stuff of today. I am fine with Otis but Kone and Schindler elevators make me nervous.

    • @JimLiElevators
      @JimLiElevators  Před 5 lety +1

      I don’t understand why they choose to modernize the Dover, but I do understand why they wanted to modernize the Westy as the motor was really noisy and was vibrating going up. That was basically the downside of the Westinghouse, but I do love the original AE fixtures! The mod on the Dover elevator was totally unnecessary, even the elevator technician don’t even know why they wanted to modernize the Dover as I showed in the video! I just don’t believe it. 😞

      The ones at the Hilton in San Antonio need replacing. Cars B and C were making noises that did not sound healthy. At least have glass doors in the cab.
