  • In this video we'll balance the equation CH4 + O2 = CO2 + H2O. Visit www.Breslyn.org for video guides on balancing equations and more!
    In order to balance CH4 + O2 = CO2 + H2O you'll need to watch out for two things. First, be sure to count all of the O atoms on the products (right) side of the equation. There are two with the CO2 and one with the H2O for a total of three. Second, when you balance the equation leave the O2 molecule for last. As a general rule, that makes balancing equations much easier.
    To balance CH4 + O2 = CO2 + H2O you'll need to be sure to count all of atoms on each side of the chemical equation.
    Once you know how many of each type of atom you can only change the coefficients (the numbers in front of atoms or compounds) to balance the equation for Methane + Oxygen gas.
    Important tips for balancing chemical equations:
    Only change the numbers in front of compounds (the coefficients).
    Never change the numbers after atoms (the subscripts).
    The number of each atom on both sides of the equation must be the same for the equation to be balanced.

      Dr. B, I have a doubt...in the oxygen part, the number atoms on the left hand side were 2 and in the right hand side there were 3. You have kept it as 2+1 but can we keep it directly as 3 instead? And also, to get the equation balanced, is it compulsory to multiply the particular element with 2?...your explanation was amazing though, I can understand pretty easily, thank you Dr. B!

    • @wbreslyn
      @wbreslyn  Před 6 lety

      That's what the coefficients tell us and one of the main reasons we balance equations - to see the ratios between compounds. Since the coefficient in front of CH4 is one (we don't write the one, but it's there) and the coefficient in front of the CO2 is one, it is a 1:1 ratio. For every one CH4 burned we get one CO2 molecule. --- Dr. B
