I feel like the New Republic should have mixed the Local PDF Funding tactic for territorial defense with a comparatively small GAR inspired federal army (about the same size but maybe with conscripts to reduce cost and for ethical reasons, yes I know I give Tarkin shit for it, but it actually works in this case). The PDFs handle %90 of issues in their sector and serve as a holding force when the federal army needs to be called in, so said FA can focus on a swift and decisive offense

    • @casbot71
      @casbot71 Před 6 měsíci +24

Also, the PDF fleets are produced mostly centrally (in hubs stationed strategically throughout the Republic) in order to take advantage of mass production and standardisation, thus lowering unit cost while improving performance.
Military academies are also liberally spread out to improve basic training levels (and incidently instil a pro Republic viewpoint).
So instead of having to scrap together a defence fleet and source second rate combat ships from wherever, local planetary forces can order X-wings from the factory along with whatever other ships, ground weaponry and equipment would be appropriate for their situation. The local manufacturing hub could also modify the equipment for species in their particular region.
[How a Wookie fits in an X-Wing is an issue, prehaps they subcontract for pilots or use gunships instead?].
That also has the advantage of should a serious problem arise, when a fast response fleet arrives from a sector hub local PDF forces can integrate with it and vice versa.
      Basically, like NATO.
Independent national Militaries that can work together seamlessly and take advantage of quality of scale when making defence acquisitions.
And should a serious war break out, they are ready for a large American force to slot right in.
The big difference is the New Republic should subsidise PDF's for certain territories.
A poor planet/system/region that can't afford what it _needs_ gets it's PDF equipment at a discount or even assigned to it - along with some Republic supervisors however, to help with running the PDF - military advisors.
That can be justified to richer planet's by pointing out that if conditions are allowed to deteriorate in poorer regions, it could become a threat to them eventually.
Failed States make great pirate havens.

Create defense fleets for patrols and train planetary defense forces that can be organized for a unified mobilization. Hire mandalorians and or bounty hunters as both trainers and mercenaries. Essentially a force of spec ops and force multipliers to prepare. Set up bases on mostly remote and uninhabited worlds.
That’s what I would’ve done if I was managing the new republic by the time the First Order tries to make a move.

10:09 This reminds me of a scene from the Star Trek: Voyager episode “The Voyager Conspiracy”. When Seven of Nine, a former Borg Drone, reconfigures her regeneration (sleeping) alcove to download status reports to her brain while she’s regenerating, her brain isn't able to handle all the information. At the end of the episode, when another person asks her why she’s disassembling the alcove, she replies, “The alcove functioned within expected parameters. Unfortunately, I did not.”

Interesting info on the creation of the Viper Droid as well as some related backstories. There is something about the Viper Droid on Hoth that needs to be addressed. It is true that a Viper Droid landed on Hoth like a meteorite; the droid emerging is the very first image we get on the planet's surface before the scene cuts to Luke mounted on his Tantan. Luke spots a meteorite hitting near him, but it is not necessarily the probe droid unless the probe droid emerged after Luke was taken by the wampa. Either way, at that point it is irrelevant, Luke could not have reported the probe droid because he never even saw the droid. The Viper Droid was not discovered until after Luke had been rescued. The first indication that the droid was outside the base was due (likely) to the fact that the droid had found the generator and was transmitting images/location. Recall the film, Princess Leia is informed by Rebel Command, "Princess, we have a visitor." And at that point the Rebels still don't know what's out there. Another report comes in. "It's metal." Leia responds, "Then it can't be one of those creatures." (referring to a wampa)
Next suggestion comes from Solo, "It could be a speeder. One of ours." Then a controller calls out, "Wait! There's something very faint coming through." Then we hear a robotic chattering/beeping to which C-3PO informs everyone that the code is not used by the Alliance and suggests it's an Imperial code. That's when Han and Chewy go out to get a closer look. After the encounter: -Solo: "I'm afraid there's not much left."
    Leia: "What was it?"
Solo: "Droid of some kind. I didn't hit it that hard, it must have had a self-destruct."
    Leia: "An imperial probe droid."
Solo: "It's a good bet the Empire knows we're here."
General Reiken: "We better start the evacuation."
    Cut to Death Squadron 😏😮‍💨😜

I mean the droids could just have extremely powerful sensors for detecting "anomalous" energy signatures (based off of what is known about the planet), also do some broad image scanning (like LiDAR), and have the footage it takes be a small part of what intelligence it sends back. The droids were a broad generalized sweep, and thenI imagine the next step would usually be to do a more thorough investigation of any planet/system that had any kind of anomaly. The only reason the Empire went after Hoth so quickly was because Vader sensed that it was where the Rebels were hiding. I don't think they expected the droids to photograph every square cm of a planet.

    • @jeffreycarman2185
      @jeffreycarman2185 Před 6 měsíci +5

I’m guessing the probe droids could do orbital scans, so the droid on Hoth would have detected the energy signature of the base from space then landed close.

Star wars has like 3 levels of lore, the first is what you see in the films taking in what's said and what's happening but not really diving in deeper into the why of certain things. the second is watching the films and all the animated series and tv series and generally getting a better idea of what's happened inbetween films and seasons (bad batch meeting Hera and Kanan to show their starts for example) this second part is where I sit while just teetering into part 3. Part 3 of lore is all the books, comics, director interviews, behind the scenes, basically anything that is star wars related that's considered cannon. CZcamsrs like this channel help people in part 2 to see a bit more into part 3 and understand better whats happening, why the empire was often so bad at what it did (not deploying TIE's instantly with a suspicious ship inspection) and hell even going as small as telling me that these probes were called viper droids/probes
and I love it, learning about all the jedi masters that you see once in a film or episode, learning about how early on the rebellion actually began, what happened to clones after the rise of the empire, I love it! It just shows how much thought and effort has gone into this universe and I can't really think of anything else that has this much to it

Hind sight being 20/20. Viper droid deployment was poor. 1 recon droid/(planet or moon) was inefficient according to the "blueprints" in some sourcebook. Being slow but stealthy, it would probably take sometime to survey a world. Proper and timely surveillance would have a mother orbital stealth droid and a litter of Viper droids with drop pods. Thankfully, the Empire's superiority complex clouds common sense thinking. Merry Christmas, Alan. Thanks for making these wonderfully fun segments.

You know, battletech and 40k take a grimmer if far more realistic view on interstellar government. Neo feudalism kinda does make sense. Or at least a truly federated government. Trying to centrally legislate to thousands of inhabited worlds and dozens of sentient peoples is laughable. In BattleTech you have the successor states and dozens of periphery states. Quality of life varies wildly. As for 40k as grim as the galaxy can be simple reality is one on a civilized world could live their entire life never facing the horrors of the greater galaxy. You might even have democratic elections or in the case of a feudal, planetary, lord governor they are not all despots. My point is democracy functions best in a homogenized society. The wilder the variety of those you intend to govern the messier and less efficient th3 government will be.

Later, Probius becomes Thrawn's clone's personal droid, helping him to persuade Admiral Ackbar himself to the true danger the Yuuzhan Vong pose, long before their invasion. The republic and empire both had the same impossible task: impose order on a galactic scale.
IMHO I don't believe that a galactic scale government is even a good idea. Trying to protect the rights and parcel out the responsibilities to such an unthinkably massive amount of people and territory. I think smaller regional powers would be better on the whole.
Some people have told me that having multiple Sovereign nations like that will Only increase war and thus the republic is needed. Nevermind that this doesn't actually work, as shown in a lot of star wars media (it's in the name) it ignores a very clear fact: that just because there is "less war" doesn't mean there's less suffering. Exploration, marginalization, and more all still happen.
The outer rim isn't poor because a lack of resources, it's poor because everything is shipped off to the core to fuel their extravagance, and little is reinvested into the communities that actually gather these resources. And since infrastructure is poor, there's a lot of gaps in law and order... Hence outlaws, criminals, and the like thrive.

@@alexspain9103 You have zero clue what your talking about and it shows. Thrawn would of easily brought the entire galaxy under the empire's control if idiots like Tarkin didn't exist, he wanted to use the resources for the death star to build massive amounts of lancers, battle stations of much smaller scale filled with TIE defenders and other smaller task forces. He would of never let the Empire waste resources and talent like Tarkin and Palpatine, I fully belive if Thrawn even had 1/10 of the empire's resources under his control and he would of stomped the rebels into the ground before they even could rally together.

@@SasoriZert That's exactly the problem. Whether your military spending is on the Death Star or a billion TIE fighters it doesn't change the fact that half your population is starving and every other sector of your economy is on the verge of collapse. People can't eat bullets, they can't get an education from warships, you can't ship construction materials on a TIE fighter and if all your conscript age youth are in the army then no one will be left to build houses.
Running a successful state is a hell of a lot more than just having a non-wasteful military.
Edit: And I would like to clarify that I have read the Thrawn trilogy at least five times.

@alexspain9103 thats the thing. Thrawn ran more on inspiration and loyalty than fear. If he was in charge he would have rallied the people behind him. Legends touched on that with the empire of the hand. The people were fanatically loyal to thrawn

@@angelhare8374 Exactly my point Thrawn isn't a one trick pony this man can run lead troops on a galactic scale and run the territory with better care then most government ever could with his meager resources give this man even half of the empire's output he'd have the Empire so loyal and happy they would never rebel.
