  • www.judynorton.com Instagram - officialjudynorton On The Waltons, Kami Cotler played youngest daughter Elizabeth. In this behind the scenes with Judy Norton (Mary Ellen Walton) I share fond memories of working with Kami in The Homecoming through 9 seasons of Walton episodes. From the innocent 5 year old scene stealer to the grown woman who works in education today.
Always generous with our fans, Kami often shares her own recollections on her Facebook page. In fact you can find most of The Walton cast on social media. Thanks for watching - I have many more behind the scenes videos on my CZcams channel, so check them out. I'm also taking many of your questions and answering them directly on videos titled "Ask Judy" - so if you have questions see if I've already answered them in segments, or put them in the comments. I'll get to as many as I can.

@@judynorton2598If I had been director I would have asked Kami to try accentuating the word "feel", as if she were gently protesting, while leaving room for the possibility that her sister was correct, if only in lieu of Erin's seniority: "I don't FEEL like a pissant."
I think the line would have rung even funnier,..even at the risk of rendering Elizabeth still cuter in the moment -- as if that were possible.

My Mom was quick to point out that the Walton's were very well off for a depression family, and she said they might have stayed in Wyoming, if there was a community there like was in the Little House series, however it was actually more like the only house on the prairie, with a post office/community hall/court house all in one cob building over two miles away, and a water table that was non-existant in summer months.

I was working as TD for an education tour production sponsored by Virginia Opera in the late 90s. One leg of the tour took us to the western part of the state near Waynesboro. One day we had a show scheduled at a middle school in Lovingston, VA. As I was heading out, I was noticing how beautiful the area was and began seeing the signs for Schuyler, which led to thinking of The Waltons. As I pulled up to the school and began unloading onto the stage, the door at the back of the auditorium opens and who walks in but Kami Cotler. I recognized her immediately and was completely stunned that she was a now a teacher and living in Waynesboro; it was surreal that the actress that played Elizabeth had moved back to the area that inspired the creation of the show in we watched her grow up. We were having a great conversation when we were both pulled away; unfortunately we never got to finish it. Running into Kami was definitely one of the highlights of that tour and something that remains quite special to me. Kami Cotler is one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. Just wanted to share.

Judy, a few years ago I picked up a second hand DVD and had the pleasure of watching an episode featuring yourself as a young teen who wanted to get away see the world, and ran away with a travelling musician who cruelly rejected you. The way in which Mary Ellen was understood and welcomed back with love was a lesson I hope many over protective parents took to heart.
I wish that there will come a day when I can watch every episode.

You mentioned her taking a breath in between lines too, I remember that now and actually it went with her age and trying to say the lines like you stated. It just blended in and was natural, I never thought of it. Thank you for sharing things we wouldn’t know or even think about! Just finished all nine seasons yesterday. Great memories of my mom and (esp) dad telling me, as we watched The Waltons back when it was new, that was how it was or how it was sort of like when he was a kid in early '30s - into early war years.

Teller12, then your folks had it a lot better than mine did. My father, in particular, had lived on a Canadian prairie farm which they lost to “the bank”. His family was taken in by another family and they all lived in a two room farm house that winter and had nothing to eat but cornbread and honey. I know that sounds like “we had to walk five miles to school up hill both ways”, but I’m sure it felt like it on empty stomachs. My Dad remained a penny pincher his whole 94 years as he was always afraid there’d be another depression.

Thanks, Judy. She was a very smart five year old. I loved the whole cast as I watched the show; however, I loved Kami due to her hair color which was the same as mine was when I was an infant. The Waltons reruns were shown at Midnight about a year after it was canceled. It would take a year to go through all 9 seasons. & My Mom worked graveyard shift & so I'd stay up & watched the shows. Watching The Changeling, & how well Kami stood out in that performance, & all the Poltergeist scenes!? I know it is ridiculous to say it, but I didn't go to sleep that night, cuz I was too shook up about that episode. I still went to school in the morning. But it was difficult to sleep after that for the next couple of nights. LOL! Plus it was amazing to find out that it was done 4 years before Poltergeist became a movie.

Thank you for the "behind the scenes" -- I often watch on devices where I can't comment or like. It's funny you mentioned her allergies -- she was so so sweet, but you can hear her -- I don't know who originally put together the cast, but it could not be more perfectly cast -- I think we all wished we had a grandfather like "you old fool." -- I wish they made tv like this again -- I can't tell you what episode, but "John" says "damn," and Olivia about had a heart attack -- ha. I have a friend who is head of HR for a huge huge enterprise. Her job was always stressful, but now with Covid, it's 10 times worse. She literally has the Waltons and Little House on DVD and she switches out and when she comes home from work, she and her little doggie sit on the sofa and eat dinner with either the Waltons or the Ingalls -- be well -- Patrica
