Knowledge of physiology and the differences due to age, gender and genetics is essential for all coaches. 'No Gain Without Pain' is an oxymoron and outdated training concept. If your charge is not improving as quickly as others, you must change YOUR coaching methods through detailed evaluation of the reasons why! Joint structures are different for each individual as is flexibility! The coach needs to go back to school!

As addendum to my initial comment I'd like to add the following; Pain thresholds are also very different not just for each person but also per training day!
Stretching for increased range of motion should be done at the end of a training session NOT at the beginning and after the body temperature has been increased via some light cardiovascular exercise which will facilitate about a 40% increase in improvement.
Use of the PNF (or proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) technique will allow a much safer and greater gain in range, especially if an ACTIVE stretch is used as opposed to passive! If these terms are unfamiliar, you have some research to do!
