- London's Horniman Museum has returned its collection of Benin Bronzes to Nigeria.
They were stolen in the late 1800s, by British colonial troops after they invaded the Kingdom of Benin in what is now Nigeria.
The artefacts ended up in museums in Europe and the United States and African states have sought their return for decades.
So how can other countries ensure their cultural treasures are given back and can go on display for generations to come?

#LootedArtifacts # BeninBronzes #Nigeria #InsideStory
The title should be stolen artefacts not artefacts.
Exactly 💯
This is encouraging and thanks for being so open and genuine about this
We Beni's need all our artifacts back to Benin City Nigeria, thank u 🙏
The best news I've heard in 20+yrs
19:41 I think the speaker makes a great point that the Holocaust is made out to be so different to any other atrocity in history, therefore objects stolen during that are seen as more worthy of being returned, compared to, say, those stolen during the colonial period
King leopard ok Belgium killed more than 10 millions Congolese, killing natives and taking their wealth… I guess their never taught you that in school.
@@djlyon2864 I think you’re confusing my statement. I’m saying that it’s ironic that the Holocaust is made to be so special in comparison to other atrocities and suggesting that other atrocities need to be taken more seriously by modern people
Lol British museum will run out of items soon😂
They can put the queens teeth on display
@@manemane6824😂
😂
Cambridge University has loads of stolen property too.
Honestly as a Nigerian
Our corrupt leaders will be like “we don’t need it. Just give us dollar” and a couple for display 😂
Your learders will sell them off in black market...like our leaders 😂😂
What concern oba of Benin properties and Nigeria leader corruption
I hope the queen returns all the gold and jewels she wore until her dying days which were stolen from India.
Britain certainly seems to need Niger oil soo bad, that they’d even give back stolen items. A super rare moment indeed!!!
Theoretically if they did decide to, it's not clear who to return some of them to as there are multiple claimants for items due to geopolitical changes, and then where items were appropriated from owners who had themselves gained them through by force, you should perhaps be trying to work out the original owner if possible rather than who it was appropriated from. I'm sure there are plenty of items with a bit more clarity for who to return to though.
Wonderful news!
I'm glad this action has finally taken place. My hope and prayer is to ensure the Africans look after these artifacts...
You honestly expect that to happen? All you have to do is look at history and you can see that it won't!
They must also return stolen gold they reserved and more...
That's a no no
Lots in the ashmolium museum in the basement in Oxford, University of Oxford has all the stolen property.
Britain is the looting and money laundering capital of the world. Nobody does piracy like they do.
Times have changed. We have entered a new era, I guess the beginning of a goldern era.
Don’t count on it. Britain never returns anything it steals. Just ask the Chagos Islanders and there is a UN resolution that Britain totally ignores.
🛑 France please return the stolen artefacts of Africa!
i'm happy even just to read such a headline.
we're in the right timeline, woohoo!
now thats a rare move from the british museum
Let's have a follow-up vid in a year and see what actually happens to these treasures.
Does not matter. It dint belong to the people who took it. From what you seem to insinuating, it's ok for a thief to steal something and then tell the one they stole from that they take good care of the stolen goods and so should hold onto it.
Does it matter,really?
I agree with returning things. But a flat digital item is not something I'm willing to go to a museum to see nor do I want to see that online. I have gone to touring exhibits. I am happy to go to those. Maybe there are replicas in those but I don't want to know. It takes something away from the historical importance of things. It would be meaningless to me.
Europe knows, their time is up...
@aljazera talking about stolen artifacts but still bringing the thieves to talk about.
Can we do the same with people?
I may be going against the current here but I'm not sure this is such a good idea..
These are critical times. Does this mean Arabs will respect the grave sights of Africans in the north of Africa ( Egypt )?
If the artefacts were stolen, looted or forcefully taken in the first place, how returning them would simply be enough or fair to the countries these items belonged to?
What else u want? I think people should thank them for keeping them safe for 200 years. They wouldn't have survived this long in their original countries this long.
@@rafaelguerreros263 Thank them for what? For invading other countries, ransacking and stealing their valuable artefacts? If you simplifying this way, you either mistaken or out of touch.
Why did you not invite a person from Nigeria or Egypt we want to know how they feel & how they think about your biased analysis
The Title of this news should be, . . . Returning Artefacts where it is belongs,. i guess.
European museums will be soon empty
What do you expect from a continent without history
Soon there will be no museum
In Europe, they depend on African artifacts so bad, call themselves
Archeologists but dig out Europe
History and put Europe artifacts in
Your museum, give back Africa's Artifacts your ancestors stole it
Return every damm artifacts back
To it origin because it does belong there.
😁😁😂😂
Is it so? The dead queen of stolen properties restoring the Koh-E-Noor, to the respective claimants?
Iss hisab se toh British museum khali ho jayga 😂😂
Can British return ? British still holding more and more foreigner's diamond and gold .
Where what is European culture
Glad that this countries still have remaining shame of being a thieves.
No, they can't professionally preserve these precious artefacts like it is treasured in the West. For the sake of humanity, it's better to have them kept in Western museums. Those precious historical artefacts in the Western museums are the fortunate ones.
It's not the right time to return to these countries.
really.... why...why did you stole it in the first place..... admitting to being a thief
Nah There is no logic on your statement unless they pay big royalty from
displaying of that stolen artefacts to the country. But never happen that way right.
This is how a thief thinking
fear not corrupt politicians will sell them back to highest bidder.
stereotypical bullshit ..... we africans value what was made by our ancestors .......
Shame on Britain.
Well, did the British stole every single piece of Benin cultural artifact? What happened to those that are not taken by the British? Did the Nigerian save those or they're too busy stripping them down & sold it for more money? Let's hope the IS didn't get their hammer on them.....
The British thinking they are god's. when you founded those artifacts in their original places they were in perfect shape , their are not world artifacts they are specifically bennin artifacts they belong in their original places not you thiefs
To the victor belong the spoils
Who toke care of the art before they were stolen it was the Africans from the kingdom of Bannin,it is an African problem not the world, these arts belong to Africans
Benin is for benin not nigeria
You mean STOLEN ARTIFACTS! 😏🙄
This comment section is just so negative, full of ignorance and resentment with few exceptions
And they will be stolen, destroyed, and lost forever.
The origin country, normally corrupt. Soon after the artefact returned, either not maintain properly or being sold to black market.
Bad idea.
West museums soon will be empty
Hopefully
Good
*THE EUROPE IS BENDING OVER TO NIGERIA NOT OUT OF GOODWILL BUT BECAUSE OF THE NIGERIAN OIL & GAS ⛽ 🛢️ THEY SO DESPERATELY NEED* 🤣🤣🤣
Hmm make sense. They shortage of gas 😂
