  • London's Horniman Museum has returned its collection of Benin Bronzes to Nigeria.
They were stolen in the late 1800s, by British colonial troops after they invaded the Kingdom of Benin in what is now Nigeria.
The artefacts ended up in museums in Europe and the United States and African states have sought their return for decades.
So how can other countries ensure their cultural treasures are given back and can go on display for generations to come?

    Presenter: Adrian Finighan

    Guests:

    Barnaby Phillips, Author

Dr. Jos van Beurden, Senior Researcher, Colonial Cultural Collections and Restitution, Free University, Amsterdam

Luigi Prada, Professor of Egyptology, Uppsala University

19:41 I think the speaker makes a great point that the Holocaust is made out to be so different to any other atrocity in history, therefore objects stolen during that are seen as more worthy of being returned, compared to, say, those stolen during the colonial period

I hope the queen returns all the gold and jewels she wore until her dying days which were stolen from India.
Britain certainly seems to need Niger oil soo bad, that they’d even give back stolen items. A super rare moment indeed!!!

Theoretically if they did decide to, it's not clear who to return some of them to as there are multiple claimants for items due to geopolitical changes, and then where items were appropriated from owners who had themselves gained them through by force, you should perhaps be trying to work out the original owner if possible rather than who it was appropriated from. I'm sure there are plenty of items with a bit more clarity for who to return to though.

I agree with returning things. But a flat digital item is not something I'm willing to go to a museum to see nor do I want to see that online. I have gone to touring exhibits. I am happy to go to those. Maybe there are replicas in those but I don't want to know. It takes something away from the historical importance of things. It would be meaningless to me.
