- Circular Saw For Beginners Masterclass: bit.ly/3omII1I Circular saws can be an intimidating tool to use for those not used to using one, and for good reason, they can do a lot of damage in the blink of an eyelid. My recommendation is to just take your time, make sure that your surroundings are free of clutter and secure your pieces that you are cutting with a clamp to minimise potential injuries. With that, in today's video l just want to brush up on the basics of circular saw safety so that your experience using the circular saw is an efficient, enjoyable and safe one.
I hope you enjoy it 👍😁🇦🇺

😂.....Cheers mate! Glad you found the vid useful 👍😁🇦🇺
Table saws are not meant for sitting. Very uncomfortable.
Perfect for small projects. Not got a lot of power so if the wood starts to flex it stops the saw pretty easy. Use it for small tasks and you will be happy. Safety system Works great czcams.com/users/postUgkxjpBI8OOeUXib_iT7UomCrQ-uauwZJ62c .lose your grip on the saw it shuts off and the sheath closes over exposed saw.
Hey Shane, one of the best things I ever did when it came to a circular saw was buy a 165mm 18v Makita. The smaller size does about 80% of what my 235mm Hitachi saw would do, so I only need that on special occasions. But the best thing about the 18v cordless, is the brake on it. Release the trigger and the saw stops in only a few seconds, and it has the added benefit of no cord, which means no tripping hazard and no fluffing around with the cord accidentally getting caught.
Just my 2 cents
Yeah all good reasons Nathan 👍👍 Thanks for taking the time to leave the feedback mate. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺
I just bought the DeWalt Atomic series 4 1/2" 20V saw. Because of where I am and the light cutting I do it's much more practical than my standard 7 1/4" circ.
I believe the brake also stops it from kicking back as it stops when the pressure gets too high
LOVE this week's dad joke. I'm going to use it often. Thanks for all the tips. I'm glad your back to posting videos. I really enjoy them.
Appreciate that Jeffrey! Hope you're having a great weekend mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Great safety tips. One other one I didn’t see was to adjust the height of the blade to only cut the thickness of the material thus saving the blade wear.
Yeah that's a good one Bill 👍 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Great tips as always Shane, all good reminders. Loving the "Safety in numbers' 🤣.
😂....Thanks Ian! Appreciate you taking the time to watch mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Here’s a beginner question i haven’t heard anyone ask. Why does a circular saw blade need to spin so fast to cut wood?
@@mranonymous8979 i think faster means more powerful
Tbh did not get the joke xD
Hi Shane, thanks for sharing your recent experience. Takes a big guy to admit mistakes and it shows we can all make them.
Cheers Jerry! Yeah it was a close call mate....got a bit complacent. We all need a little wake up call every now and then 👍😁🇦🇺
Great tips for everyone, I've had kickbacks now and then over the years, mostly because I was working on unlevel ground, no sawhorses or workbench. I made myself a workbench last year, so much better on my back that way😊
It happens to all of us Susan 😬 Thanks for watching and well done on making that much needed workbench 👍🇦🇺😁
Wise advice and funny as always. This is a great reference for circs. One of the clearest remaining memories from my childhood is my dad coming close to taking his arm off with a circular saw. Early 90s, im out the backyard with him and hes cutting on saw horses, it kicks back and he gets a scratch from one end of his forearm to the other. He said some words, put the saw down, sat down and chain smoked while staring at the ground/sky/ his arm!! *Cue The Wonder Years opening credits*
Mate!....no wonder the old man had to sit down 😬 Yeah that's one of those things that happens to anyone who uses a circ at some point....scary as A.F! Thanks for watching Ryan and hope all's well down there mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Your safety tips are good as gold. Especially because you don't just tell what to avoid, but you present a solution for very typical situations.
One little bonus tip, that works wonders: Make your work bench heavy. It will stand more stable, it will not wander off when pushing with the circular saw. Even folding work stands can be weighed down with some bricks on a board.
Yeah great tip re the Bench Andre! Thanks for taking the time to watch mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks Uncle Knackers for all of your wisdom and sense of humor. You are by far the most entertaining character on YT. I look forward to your videos more than any other person on the internet. ❤️ 🇺🇸
👍😁....Cheers Dave! Really appreciate that mate 👍 Hope you're having a great weekend 👍😁🇦🇺
Such a great video. There's a lot I didn't know there and you may have saved me an accident. It seems that so far I've been extremely lucky. When cutting sheet material I've been using polystyrene sheet behind it and cutting it on the floor. And on normal lengths of wood I've only had to cut end pieces, so only support one side. I can now see why this has stopped things from binding on me. If I didn't have polystyrene sheets to hand for sheet material, or if I needed to cut a piece of wood in the middle then I may have done the ways that you showed me can cause binding.
BTW I do like your celebratory jazz "SKI-BOP". I do this occasionally at home and my wife hates it 😄
We all have our share of luck Andy 😬 Appreciate the feedback mate and thanks for taking the time to watch 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks Shane, great tips, have only started using a circular saw confidently from your videos
Good stuff Tony! Thanks for the feedback mate 👍😁🇦🇺
I have to thank you Soooo MUCH! I have been accumulating saws and tools for the past 2 years to start small woodworking projects as a hobby. I know NOTHING so I have been too afraid to turn on my saws let alone use them. lol :-( This video has really helped aleve my many fears. THANKS!!!
You're very welcome Sheelah! Glad you found it useful and thanks for taking the time to watch 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks for that. I'll be sure to review this before I unbox my still unused circular saw and give it go. I've also subbed to your mini course. The more I learn the more my fears will diminish, and one day I'll actually plug in the beast and do my first cut. Can't wait, Knackersss!
Good stuff Darius! It's all about getting over the fear which is very understandable...thanks for subbing to the Mini Course....as soon as it goes live you'll be the first to know. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺
I love these videos. I like to touch up on safety on the regular to help keep my digits. Thanks 👍

My biggest safety concern is my wife sticking out her foot to trip me up while I am not watching
Genuine safety tips. thanks.

Good one , Easy to flow - some people do NOT UNDERSTAND the basic principals involved .
Cheers as always Bob 👍 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
As a beginner I really appreciate these tips. I think I'm guilty in doing all the things you demonstrate! Those examples of what one can trip in 😅😅.. Now if I'm allowed to make a suggestion for a future video, I could really need a bandsaw safety tips video. Cheers Shane, take care.
Cheers Jesper! From what l've seen from you, you are far from a beginner 👍👍👍 Good idea re the bandsaw mate....one problem....l don't one a bandsaw 😂 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
It's always to have a safety reminder once in a while. Thanks.

This video is right on time. I recently took a carpentry course and I see a lot of guys misuse the circular saw and caused it to bounce. This video is beneficial. I love the accent and I learned a lot of Australian slang.
Hahaha....thanks Mini Mum. Appreciate you taking the time to watch 👍😁🇦🇺
Great Tips, Nakkaa!!!

Another great video Knacks. I find that getting the blade depth right can make kickback a little less likely too. Love your work.
Yeah that's a good one Vince 👍 Appreciate the feedback mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Your presentation is excellent. Thanks.

Great tips, thank you very much!
No worries mate! Glad you found the vid useful 👍😁🇦🇺
All good common sense. I'm happy that I already knew them, but it's always good to refresh my memory and check that I haven't picked up any bad habits (like yoga to hold something down that really should be clamped). Thank you for potentially saving a limb!
My pleasure mate! I have to say that we all at times are guilty of practicing our yoga moves which can be to our detriment if things go wrong 😬 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺

Thanks for this video! I have a cordless circular saw (came in a tool combo set) but I've not used it yet. This video gave me some valuable info. Thanks again.
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful 👍😁🇦🇺
Crazy how you put this video out a few hours after me getting some crazy kick back on my plunge saw!
Good timing Robert! 😬 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
An outstanding video, dude! Excellent tips to avoid injury, however, common sense...or the lack of it is a major factor! I've never used a circular saw, maybe I never will it if I do, I'll come back and watch this video first! Keep up the fantastic work, Chief! 👍
Thanks as always Andy! Hope you're having a great weekend mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks for you top 5 videos. Keep.up the good work👍🇨🇦🍺🍺😀
Thanks Dan! 👍😁🇦🇺
Thank you for sharing your tips! I a newbie and haven’t used a saw yet. I want to make sure I use it safely!!!
No worries at all mate....Just take it easy and don't rush anything 👍😁🇦🇺
I used my circular saw (a ryobi cordless) for the first time a few months ago when I needed to cut some yellow tongue boards to size to provide some flooring in my attic so I wasn't storing my stuff on the ceiling plaster. I probably did all the things you said not to do and I'm amazed I didn't end up hurting myself. I will hopefully be using it again (I've been inspired by a lot of your DIY project videos), and I'll definitely be a lot more careful next time
Thanks Simon 👍 Yeah mate you do need to be a little careful...it just takes one small loss of concentration to end up with a very bad situation. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺

Thanks Andy! Yeah getting close mate 👍😁🤞🤞
@@diyforknuckleheads Haha, mines not a serious channel. Just a bit of fun as a hobby. I love the way you edit your videos though and I'd love to learn how to do it without spending all day. Maybe when the kids are a bit older and I've got more time on my hands when I'm not working I'll up my game a bit as I'll have more time to make videos and edit.
Hey Shane! Cheers! Long time mate! LOL @ 05:23, & 05:57! What a ripper, had me laughing my *bleep off! Excellent video, and I Than You for it. If it saves even one person from injury, it will have been priceless!
Always remember when cross cutting, “blade side, waste side!” It’s not always practical, but should be adhered to whenever it is!
So glad you are safe, and please stay safe and Healthy!
Cheers Mate 👍👍👍👍👍✌🏻🙄🔨
😂😂...Cheers for that George and l'll remember that saying as well....very clever 👍 Hope you're having a great weekend mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks for the tip. Never had a dad to teach me this stuff cheers
My pleasure mate 👍😁🇦🇺
I'm a great believer in PPE Shane and I was surprised to learn recently that i shouldn't use my gloves when using a saw as the blade can catch the glove and draw my hand in. So pleased I learnt this from uTube and not from experience. Keep up the good work 👍
Yeah Ian...that can happen mate 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks Shane, great tips. I've seen the odd tradie occasionally doing some strange yoga poses, including one bloke I saw balancing a board on his knee and trimming the end with a battery power saw. I used to think it doesn't look right but they're qualified and trained they maybe that's how they were taught to do it. After watching your video, it clearly wasn't right, he was taking a shortcut and it will come back to bite one day. One other thing, I knew about putting lengths of timber under large sheets, but I didn't know they were called gluts. Learnt a new word today. Thanks Knackers.
Cheers Len 👍 Yeah l've seen some rather dubious things done in the past too mate....thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Good show Unk!!!!!

A good wake up. Every safety tip need to be taken seriously. My safety tip is if you have a perfect cut lined up stop and start again if you don't have all your PPE on. Those trip hazards were hilarious LOL. Thanks.
😂 Thanks Matt and good common sense re the PPE! Cheers mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Lots of great tips, Knackersssah!!
Sorry to say that I'm guilty of a few of those. But with this video, I will be safe rather than sorry.
Hope to see you at the wood working show in June. Cheers mate. 👍👍🍺🍺

Thanks for sharing Uncle knackers. I have to cut some timber lattice tomorrow, I don’t have a circular saw but I suppose I will have to go with my hand saw or jig saw. Old Skool ……🙄👍

Thanks for this important video. Not only for newbies like myself, but also as a wake up/freshen up video for all the experienced people who might even be more at risk than us ‘still a bit intimidated starters’.
Because inattention is always just around the corner…
There are SO many videos online with ‘hacks’ and stuff and all to often I see people with their fingers RIGHT NEXT to the spinning blade!!
And they DARE to give advice !! Truly irresponsible!
Thanks mate.....and you're right, complacency can often lead to an accident. Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺🎄
Nice one knackers. Good info well presented.
Much appreciated mate 👍🇦🇺😁
Great tips & dad jokes as usual! 1 tip i'd share is to use the saws depth setting every time.. avoids cutting things by accident, but more importantly it becomes much easier to follow a straight line/guide.
Yeah great tip mate 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
I had a circular saw kick back when it hit a hidden knuckle in the wood. Fortunately, I was not standing directly behind the saw at the time.
Great video - well presented
Thanks mate and yeah you're right.....you gotta be careful 👍
Thanks!

@@diyforknuckleheads You're most welcome. I really appreciate all your videos, I find them very useful and quick to the point. Also like your personality and humor. I had a genuine laugh with the Nobel prize winner one. 😂🤣
A good video is useful. I have a circular saw Makita 6601 one of my favorite tools and I have been using it for a long time and I understand that sometimes you just forget about the safety of use, feeling like an "experienced user"))). And for beginners, this video should be watched without fail, from the instructions
You can't do that with an instrument. The video tutorial is much clearer.
Thank you very much for the feedback mate....we ALL need a reminder sometimes no matter how experienced we are 👍😁🇦🇺
I subscribed for the dad jokes there amazing

Wow, that's super lucky. I had just used my Circular Saw for the first time and I didn't know why it had kicked back on me. I was super lucky because it shot to my face. Now I know that it was bound. Thanks for educating me.
No worries at all Matan! Glad you came out of it OK 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Hey Uncle where ya been? We missed you. 45yrs in the business and still got all my fingers, just no hands to put them on!! Seriously tho, great vid as always, thanks, keep up the good work, and stay safe.
😂😂...Thanks Paul 👍 Had some time off mate but getting back into it now 👍👍😁🇦🇺
thanks for the advice! Just made some safe cuts for some fence boards today that folks were gonna charge $2k for 😂
Electrical eng here with electricians apprentice training so lmk if you ever have any electrical questions!
also -- one thing that I learned on my first cut today was to run the saw a few inches past the end of the piece, if the guard is set to make a minimum depth cut. I stopped before going a couple inches past the end of the board (given my view from above) and the cut wasn't perfect as it left a tiny chip at the end which I had to flake off.
Thanks a lot Alex and l really appreciate your offer of help when it comes to electrical stuff 👍👍 Hey mate...practice makes perfect...good luck with the saw and thanks for taking the time to watch. Cheers 👍🇦🇺😁
awesome mate great tips hope ya well. we’ve all had that close call with the bloody things. one thing for me especially is always know what ya cutting underneath the product or on the other side. nail etc. a tip for ur new saw tips purchase will be for me especially was makita. my electric is right side cut/blade placement but the battery is left side cut/blade placement. may not be an issue for some but on shorter pieces of timber it’s annoying. take care mate.
I know exactly what you're talking about mate. I've used one of those before and felt the same which is why l've been reluctant to buy the battery powered model 👍 Hope you're well Wes and are having a great weekend.....even though you guys are probably copping it with the rain today 😬
I love my 20v Dewalt. I mainly use it for demo & rough cuts on construction lumber. It's powerful enough to get the job done, but very easy to mandarin control of at all times, even in sketchy situations. And the blade stops very quickly upon release of the trigger. I won't win any fine woodworking awards, but it's pretty much perfect for my needs.
I seem to recall that your original video on how to use a circular saw was how I found your channel in the first place. ✌
Awesome! Great to see that you've stuck around James 👍😁🇦🇺
Thank you sir, mason here and wood is foreign to me😅 have to cut some forms and had some kickback, this helps a lot
Glad to help mate! 👍😁🇦🇺
This video came across my feed at the perfect time as I'm finding that I've been using my circular saw more often. As a beginner, this is life saving information. e.g I did not know about the clamping situation as my dad always just did the yoga poses to hold things down so that's where I learned. Gotta go buy some clamps. What's a good size clamp to get for a beginner that would be good for most household applications?
Cheers mate! Glad the video was useful 👍 6" clamps are pretty handy but having 12" clamps just gives you a bit more flexibility. Cheers 😁👍🇦🇺

Thanks Knoll 👍 Yeah it was pretty close mate but just goes to show what can happen even if you many years of experience 👍😁🇦🇺
I grew up around: chainsaws, cherry pickers, and wood splitters. My father told me as a kid if your ever doing a task and it starts to feel unsafe, stop because most likely it is unsafe. To this day I apply it to everything from ladders, to wood chippers, to weed whackers. Good tips! :-)
Yeah great advice mate 👍👍🇦🇺😁
Thanks for video. I recently bought a circular saw and discovered for myself how loud it is when I switched it on for the first time (no blade attached). So I ordered a pair of ear muffs that arrived a few days ago, and plan to use the circular saw for the first time tomorrow (clamping down my work pieces for sure).
Good luck with it mate! Take your time and you'll be fine 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
@@diyforknuckleheads Thanks. I made sure to keep both hands on the saw, stand to the side... but it didn't move smoothly... so I stopped. Everything seemed OK, so I tried again... but same thing... and there was a strange smell. "It's burning the wood, maybe I'm moving to slowly," I thought to myself. That's when I decided to have another look at the blade and realised I'd make knucklehead mistake #1 - the blade was on the wrong way. Doh!
It was much better after I changed it. :)
