I met him and the guys in 2015 for their PC tour in Sydney. I stayed behind after the meet and greet while they were getting ready to go and get ready (what a sentence lol) for the show, and just had a nice little chat with Mikael and complimented Frederik on his Candlemass shirt. I actually asked Mikael, "what's the weirdest thing you've ever signed?" out of pure curiosity. He said, "there was one lady who got me to sign her dog. Oh, and I've signed a car too."
On stage he actually gave me a shout-out as well! Because I've been brought up on metal and have listened to Opeth since I was a literal toddler. And I told him that; on stage he was like, "and today I met a girl who has been listening to us since she was three years old!" AND I HAD JUST STOPPED RECORDING
No real point to my comment. Mikael is just an awesome, funny guy. Totally friendly and down-to-earth. I loved meeting him and the guys and hope to have another opportunity one day.

Opeth isn't a metal band anymore, though. They've expanded their sound further into Prog Rock, which has been there since the beginning. They still play their Death Metal stuff at live shows, it's just not the material they want to produce anymore. Hearts change.

I saw Opeth on the Deliverance tour back in like 2003 or so, at the House of Blues in New Orleans. Mikael made some comment apologizing for being sloppy because of a trip down Bourbon Street and the generous servings of alcohol that can be found there, but the band were in reality not at all sloppy.

Just the other night in Montreal, in between songs, Mikael says, "I love Canada, the second bast hockey nation in the world." (the Crowd playfully boos him). Then he says, "Who fooking cares about hockey? Hockey sucks. My favourite sport is badminton!" Later on he mentions it was his birthday a couple days prior. He says he only got socks for his birthday. Socks. Then he launches into a vicious rendition of Ghost of Perdition. Priceless.

Great stuff! My favourite band (and frontman) since 2008.
I really like listening to Forest of October live at the Royal Albert Hall and the speach at the end. They fucking kick ass performing a classic Opeth song and then Mikael is starting this whole speach on being the first death metal band performing in the RAH.
"We are actually bringing death metal in the halls of fine culture" Love it :)
My overall favourite live performance (that was professionally recorded) of them, is the one at the Roundhouse, though. The freaking Demon of the Fall closer, God damn!

I saw them in a little place in Santa Cruz, Ca on the Sorceress tour. About mid show Martin Mendez whispers something in Mikael's ear and walks off stage. Mikael walks up to the mic and says " he just told me he has to pee, so now I guess I have to talk to you fu**ers for a couple of minutes". When Martin returned Mikael looked at him and asked " do you feel better" with that Martin gave a visible sigh of relief and the show continued.

I had first seen them in 2008 or 2009 in St Louis. I only knew of the Damnation album (barely) and nothing else. I was blown away by the performance and the fact that he was genuinely funny, since many go for the tough guy act. I saw him in 2017 in Indianapolis and he was equally as funny. He makes fun of the audience, his own band, metal heads and how we're "supposed" to act but it's all in good fun.
