What buying tips do you have?

Knowing what to pay at the current market and scarcity. I let alot of PC 1/1's go and other low numbered cards because it doesn't make sense. A week or month goes by And guess what it's relisted and I end up winning it for a fraction of what I would have paid.

I just search for obscure lots that are auctions and try to snag them cheap or snipe them last second cheaply. Then resell the cards as singles. It's work but that's what I do.
Patience is the key. As collectors we need to remember that time is always on our side. There's not difference in picking an item up today, or 6 months from now, except finding the price that you want to pay.

I just got back into the hobby, mainly buying singles of my favorites. I always like to lowball, on pretty much anything I'm interested in. I don't expect they will accept, most decline, but they also mostly counter, and that's how you get the best deals, getting them from $10, to $6, to $3, is very fun.
Best deals I've found are in the dollar bins at card shows. I don't have many near me but I've found some great stuff in the past. Ebay I usually don't find that good of deals because I get tired of getting sniped on auctions.

And yes, dollar boxes can be great and also require patience and time.
@@JunkWaxHero I've tried, on a few occasions I win but I hear the best deals are found mid day and I'm at work and can't be on my phone then so sniping then not an option.
@@chrisc4264 you can set the snipe at any time. I find auctions I like usually with multiple days left.

Other then card shows, i find great prices at antique stores, alot of vintage cards at very low prices, example cards from the 1950s Ford, Drysdale, Banks, ashburn, Hodges, other hof under thirty dollars, cards are raw, but in very good condition.

I usually buy unopened on eBay, but I agree that the key attribute is patience, whether you've got a saved search or are just rummaging around. Since I have the luxury of being a retired old geezer, it's not hard to swoop in at the end with an appealing bid, even without a sniping service. I laughed when you said something like "It's no fun trying to negotiate with somebody that high." You can take that in more ways than one!

Auctions are often a buyer's friend, and a seller's curse (although, not always).
A seller put up a signed sports item for auction for $1 and free post (obviously hoping to attract buyers with the low entry point). It was outside of the season for said sport (so far less interest and eyes on it).
Mate won the item for $1 and free post. Seller (from memory, he had 2000+ feedback) tried to get my mate to cancel it "just letting you know that I won't be shipping the item", and tried to get my mate to cancel the transaction. Mate messaged him reminding him of his obligation as the seller, to the winner of the auction. Seller ended up, reluctantly, shipping the item in the red.
Seller gained a valuable lesson - whilst keeping their honour and Ebay Store intact - and buyer paid $1 (inc. post), for an item worth probably $20-30 (nothing Earth-shattering).
Of course, there'll be loads of other occasions where a seller has put something up on auction, not really knowing what they have, and it goes far beyond what they were expecting.
Yeah that’s a tough lesson but glad they shipped it.
I just saved almost 40% on a "Make Offer" listing with the following message. " I hope this offer will work. If not, I understand and I'll keep looking. Thanks! Andrew." It gently conveys that this is your best/final offer and that you're prepared to move on. Motivated sellers tend to accept in these situations, not all of course.

I use it a lot. I was looking at 1978 Topps packs and every result was a card that was “pack fresh,” so I changed the search to “1978 Topps pack -fresh” and eliminated all those pack fresh listings.
Using a snipping app is a must at this point. I also like it because it gives me the ability to back out if i decide its not really what i end up wanting.
I wouldnt dismiss Best Offer BINs out of hand. I'll send out an offer for what i want it for sometimes it works out...sometimes it doesnt. It depends on the cash needs of the seller.
I do need to be better at being a bit more patient and saving searches....Im a serious impulse buyer. Though I will make sure my impulse purchases are at good prices.

I have alot of Edgar Martinez autos he went to school with my mother in Puerto Rico🇵🇷 so he owned a beautiful 🏠 2 Blocks away from my grandparents 🏠 hes a very humbled person i even took a few swings in his amazing Batting cage in the yard of his 🏠. He also killed my Yankees as i grew up.

Patience is key. On modern cards i like to buy in lots. I can pick the best one and your price per card is cheaper
Misspellings can be huge for cheaper prices
My motto is patience except when a card comes up that I haven’t seen in 5 yrs and I want it. One trick I have that I can pass on to a fellow RedSox collector. I search for Yaz pieces using numerous wrong spellings. I found a few Eck pieces that way as well

The secret is finally out! The trick to getting cheap cards is to collect stuff nobody wants.
As someone who sells stuff "Buy It Now", I've found that setting the BIN at 10-15% higher than ending prices and letting folks offer what auctions are ending at is beneficial for both parties
1 comment and 1 question. You appear more relax when you are sitting and I typically like these type videos when the presenter is relaxed. On the Gixen app, what is the cost to use it and could you give a little more info on it? I’ll probably go check it out since I often get outbid at the last second. One more comment, I always put in my best bid and never raise it after I determine what it is.

I do the same thing, unless I just Have to have it. As for the nee set-up, you looked a bit uncomfortable but seemed to loosen up after a few moments.
I check the item I want to buy on sold items and completed items. Then I follow the items and set my timer on my cell phone to 2 mins before the bid ends and bid at the 5 sec mark and hope to win it.

Oh junk wax hero your starting to influence me. Them damn influencers. Joking aside great tips mike and agree with you, patience is key. I think card shows are also a great way to find deals but time consuming digging through some boxes.

Since I dabble more into original photos, theres really no such thing as waiting for the next best copy. Photos are much rarer than cards, so the chances of finding a duplicate are much harder, and thats if a duplicate even exists. Theres a good chance that many type 1 photos are 1/1 items. You can only hope that what you want is reasonable or try to negotiate with the seller. Otherwise, you wait for another you like or just save your money and pray nobody buys it before you can.

@@JunkWaxHeroIf not impossible...just gotta take what you can get sometimes. Although, I will say I've been extremely lucky scoring the photo used for Willie Mays' 1980 Exhibit, as well as his photo used for the 1954 All-Star photo pack. I found out the portrait used on the Exhibit was also used on the 1952 Giants comic book, which dates this photo as a rookie photograph. Most of all, both were bought for under 100.00. No regrets on buying those!!

@@vintagecollector5340 knew a few of the photographers that took many of the photos in the 60s and 70s since my family has been around MLB for decades. It's ironic you say that as I could have those photos reprinted pretty much at will since they owned the rights for their work.
Never buy off of impulse you will pay more. We have all done it. Instead search a large variety of what you would like and you will find better deals. So patience is number #1 doing your work #2 and letting go when you can't afford regardless lol. Never bid on an item you want just throw your max bid at the last 3-5 seconds otherwise you get in bidding wars and get in trouble 😆. I prefer you sitting down and those were some nice cards you picked up at great deals.

Never used the app, not sure I will , I think I like doing the happy dance after a winning last second snipe more than going to sleep ..just sayin But I agree, you have to know what makes sense and stick to that max number, it you look and watch sales enough you know what that is.

I absolutely HATE these sniping sites. I wish EBAY would block them, but we all know that won't happen because in the end it brings them more money. Auto bidding is one thing, but these sniping sites are ruining it.

So when you send a card to PSA that has two autographs do you just pay the fee for 1 auto and do they authenticate all auto on the card or just the star?
They will authenticate all but you pay for just the most expensive one I believe.

I would add to be very careful buying un-authenticated autographed cards of Hall of Famers. You should at least have a working knowledge of what their autograph generally looks like (or perhaps how it has changed over the years), prior to bidding. Lots of fakes out there and the worst case scenario would be spending your money on autograph authentication with PSA only for them to question the authenticity.
I would also add to your tips to look for common misspellings of player names. I’ve gotten a few cheaper Rickey Henderson cards by searching for “Ricky” instead.

I 100% agree with this comment. I think this is THE most important aspect when purchasing a signed item. Educate yourself, and don't take the word of PSA et. al. as the Gospel. They can (and so often do) make mistakes. They are offering an OPINION, and (correct me if I'm wrong) they don't give the name/s or qualifications of the person/s who has authenticated said item. I trust my own judgment... and if I'm unsure, then I'll ask the opinion of an expert/s at an established auction house (or someone who's earnt their stripes), rather than have PSA cast their eye at it, and then put their sticker on the front of the item - thus ruining it (I realise you can pay extra to have the Letter and not the sticker).
Also, consider the item itself (was the surface spherical? flat? was the signer in a mood, or in a hurry? Were they intoxicated? Of advanced age? etc.). All these influence how the autograph looks.
