  • Welcome to What Yacht To Do, a Great Loop Documentary. Today, Sam takes you on a tour of Lock 17 in action on the Erie Canal. It is the largest guillotine run lock and is located near Little Falls, New York.
We are cruising around America's Great Loop and selected a 1999 Carver 504 named the Here's To Us!! as our Great Loop boat. So much goes into Great Loop planning and we share every trip with you. Welcome aboard!

That lock is an absolute engineering marvel!

At around the 2:07 point, you talked about the simple, moving parts of the east gate and speculated about one of the large parts breaking. That's precisely what happened in 2021! One of the metal cogs in one of the large wheels broke, so for several weeks that summer, the east gate had to be raised and lowered by a huge crane. Boat traffic was backed up on both sides of the lock for a few days until the crane arrived. Safe travels!

Yes! We remember that. We were already in Lake Erie when it happened. What a mess that was. We hope they put some investment into the infrastructure on the canal. Parts of it always seem ready to break.

A simple needed process that is fun to watch. Think of the weight of that gate when is lifted. Enjoy
