There are exceptions to every ideal and that is kind of the central theme of the series. For example, you can't be completely honest without sacrificing kindness and you can't avoid conflict without abandoning the people who need you to fight for them. So basically people should be open-minded instead of sticking to their own narrow ideals and ways of thinking.
I've really come to love this scene. I know it's not in the book but I like how it shows that she won't give up and how Eric is shocked that she came because he wanted her gone.

i dont think he would have cared if she was on there side hes trained not to show fear against odd so i think it was more of a she defies me might as well give her second shot

When I was in high school, I had taken a course called "Young Adult Literature," and the Divergent series were actually some of the novels that we had to read. We read each of the books, then would watch the movies afterward in order to compare them. The part when Tris stands up to Eric in this scene literally had almost the whole class dying of laughter (including me). At first, Eric looks like he's going to reprimand Tris and make a big fuss after she gives him sass, but he just drops the matter completely with an indifferent "Okay." It was funny, intimidating, and confusing at the same time. However, when Eric turns back to look at her as he leaves, you can definitely tell that he is plotting something grim against Tris.
I was annoyed with the amount of changes they made in the entire series, from little ones like Christina not jumping second, to Tris not dying. However this is one that I liked "I did". Her bravery in standing up to Eric is full on Dauntless, and it made me smile so much when I watched it in the cinema.
well, they've already made enough changes from what I've seen in the previews with a box, and a sex scene, random simulations, and this weird wire contraption, so I don't see why they couldn't change the eric thing too.
I only just realised this, after watching the movie and seeing what Al did to Tris... When Tris wakes up from her defeat, only Christina and Will are there. Al is nowhere to be seen, which adds up to him trying to kill Tris.

If you think about it Tris did what Eric said. "Dauntless never quit". And that's exactly What Tris did. That's what makes this scene rather powerful.
