Both sound fantastic, the Gibson has a little bit more body and a larger sound. I would be happy with either. In addition as others have said the Ibanez has a slightly brighter sound and the 175 a rounder tone. I agree its all about personal preference. Since the ES175 was discontinued in 2019, the Ibanez will be the better option if you want new.

Really shows how the George Benson GB10 sounds compared to a traditional wonderful sounding jazz guitar in the Gibson ES 175 Unfortunately some people(no here though) do not make a distinction between a small bodied guitar using mini humbuckers vs a full bodied guitar with regular humbuckers No wonder Benson wanted something that would suit concert halls compared to clubs as the GB10 really cuts through, very percussive, which is something that guitarists in big bands of the 1930's and 1940's wanted in order to heard above the brass. In another review with the GB 10 vs a traditional Ibanez FG100 shows the difference even between traditional full bodied regular humbucker equiped jazz guitars. The ES Laminated top and Metal bridge may be a result of it sounding brighter than the Ibanez
Really like this video because I've been playing 175s all my life and I'm planning to get my first GB10 very soon. This is not a video to establish which one sounds better but to showcase the differences. People don't understand that these are two really different guitars...despite the color :) the ES175 is bigger and has a maple top, while the GB10 is smaller and has a spruce top. No one is better than the other one you may like the GB10 because the notes separation is very beautiful very clear sounding guitar...not as muddy as the ES175 (this one) or you may like the depth of sound and dynamic of the ES175. Two very different guitars...I would use the 175 for solo or more traditional jazz trio while the GB10 for a more electric jazz.
Both very good guitars. A change of pick or attack could make any of the two sound very similar to the other. And the sound of a guitar is always different from a player to another.
Both are great jazz boxes ,I had an 70 s era Es 175 ,now I have gb10 .,I highly recommend the GB series for all guitarists students or pros ..Half the price ,still has decent resale value .
Have owned several of each model. Typically find the Gibson to have a little darker sound, and the Ibanez pick-ups a bit hotter. btw my favourite would have to be the Ibanez GB20, larger body with one suspended pick-up. Not sure if they still make it. Can't go wrong with any of them, all sound great. More bang for the buck with the Ibanez!
Heinrich Redekop It depends on which Ibanez models you get. Some are complete bones, most chinese artcore series are garbage. But I’d like a benson 10!
@@aynrandy1 I own an 2017(i think) Ibanez GB10SE made in china and my friend owns 1980s GB10 made in Japan and tbf apart from his truss rod cover having george Bensons name on and the obvious 30 odd years of playing and settling in there is very little to choose from either build standard to quality of the materials used to make them..and they sound and feel more or less the same when played ....apparently some one contacted Ibanez re the differences beween the 2 and Ibanez replied " ones made in japan and the others made in china to the exact same spec and very last detail except for the japanese one has the "prestige" fret edge treatment and the chinese one has the "artstar" one" ....if you go on the Ibanez webste this is borne out ....im glad though that you used the word "most" chinese ibanez are garbage and not all....mines super nice ....a bargain .... in a way its a bit like the mexican made Baja telecaster is as good as the USA one just cheaper to make ..(it was a sad day when fender discontinued the Baja ...probaly affecting usa sales )..sure if moneys no object then of course you would go USA (or japanese) everytime if only for kudos of ownership and resale value ...but in my opinion were in a golden age for the quality of cheaper guitars ....in fact one of my friends whos not short of money has started as a very interesting hobby and even though he owns a few gibsons and fenders started collecting epiphone and squire etc copies of all the famous different types of guitars each company makes as to own them all unless you were a pretty rich person would be impossible .....that said good luck sourcing a authentic Rickenbacker copy lol
Hi, that Gibson 175 looks in body shape and size about the same as the Little Georgie Benson (L.G.B. 30) that I have, I also like playing the old Scotty Moore licks on the bridge pickup through a Fender Mustang Amp, and I have not seen any reviews of the bridge pickup on youtube.
that GB is right there with the 175 ,it sounds to me that the 175 has just a little more crispy bass to it,but I would need to play both to make the best judgement on them.
Oh, very funny: both guitar through the same setting, that's really good for the George Benson and compressing the 175, making it sound boomy... after a few minutes of it, I got used to it too. As a matter of fact, it all depends on the setting: a cleaner amp will make the Gibson sound fuller while a bassier amp will give the dry sound of the George benson an advantage...To be honest, I never really loved the sound of these two very professionnal guitars, and am more into the more open acoustic electrics, although they can be harder do handle. Your playing is very good indeed...
The Gibson has the tone I prefer and the notes seem slightly thicker with slightly more presence, articulation and mellowness or darkness; whatever you want to call it. I think everyone elses comments I've read on this are based more on brand and price biases than the sound that is coming to their ears. I'd like to see what people say when they can't see which guitar is which.....
I've sold my GB10 when I found a rare FAVINO from the 50ties !! You can hear this GB (1997) : BLUES FOR MY IBANEZ . Because its sound finally appeared too common... But I get a 175 blonde (1989) too... with mahogany back and sides !! more hot and mellow tone. Sincerly, I regret my Ibanez for its neck not for the little heavy body.

I like the GB10 better and I have played both, but they are both great. My best is a Guild Savoy that I exchanged the pickup to Seth Lovers,... best sound ever.
I presently own the GB10. I owned the 175 w/ Gibson 57s. Both are great and both will produce a beautiful sound and impeccable tone. However, the reason I sold the 175 and kept the GB10 is the size. It's more comfortable to play, the neck is a bit quicker, and the body is not as deep as the 175. It really came down to ease of playing. I found myself playing more precisely on the smaller GB10. Others will say a jazz box needs to be large, even larger like a 17" Gibson, and that's good if it's their preference. Either way, both are killer guitars. The GB10 new is $3500, the 175 is no longer available new, but Gibson does make the ES-275, which I also have, and it's also a smaller body and more comfortable than the 175. Very good comparison , except the tone of the Ibanez sounds too thin to me (not bassy enough) so I guess that would require resetting the tone controls on the guitar and amp for the different guitars to balance up the comparison. Both excellent guitars!
The ES 175 is louder, but I like that the G810 has a nicer balance between treble, bass and mid range. The bass and mid range on the ES 175 is way overdone. It sounds colorless and you don't get an attack. It's more like a pop. Don't know how he did it, but Wes Montgomery was able to get a more colorful and subtle sound from the ES 175. So, unless you're as good as he was, maybe the G810 is a better choice. Edit: Now I'm beginning to wonder if Montgomery played an ES 175. It may have been an L-5. Corrections on this point welcomed.
I really like the Gibson but since I don't have $6000 just laying around I would have to go with the GB10 which isn't a bad thing. I really like the GB10, it has a nice warm mellow sound and its very easy to play. I'm really not a jazz guitarist but I would like to learn some jazz chords just to sit around and strum. Now all I need is a nice house with a big front porch that I can do that on. Anybody got about $500K or so that I can borrow?

Yes, that's right, 175 has a characteristic Gibson sound, but GB10 is more comfortable and has a more midrange tone, which is also good for jazz.

I prefer the the softer sound of the Ibanez. The Gibson sounds brighter with a stronger attack, and thats not the sound that I go for.

I don't believe this ! You got rid of the superb super 58 on the FG100. Something must be wrong in your brain !
Paul Kitas Super 58 are ceramic pickups, in my experience all Japanese pickups lack tone, even vintage ones.
They have been alnico for years.
I played an Ibanez GB10 1977, and in my opinion, it was WAY better than any Gibson I have played in that price range.

John Threlfall maybe strings’ gauges are different. I’m sure thicker gauge would sound better

Not always. Gibson's manufacturing quality has changed significantly for the worse. Although the sound is still good.
