A waste-gate is a valve that is part of the hot side or turbine section of the turbocharger, it’s job is to regulate exhaust gas flow to ensure boost charge pressure are within safe operating levels. It’s essentially a spring that; when a certain boost pressure is reached, opens to allow excess exhaust gas to be bypassed out of the turbocharger in order to avoid over-speeding and over-boosting the turbocharger, Which can cause serious detrimental engine and Turbocharger damage. There are 2 types, internal and external but both do the same thing. This is not to be confused with a blowoff or bypass valve, which is part of the cold or compressor side of the turbo. The blow off has a similar job to the wastegate however the main difference is the blow off valve vents charged or boosted air either to atmosphere or back into the intake. This is also done to avoid sudden back pressure from boost as this can also cause damage to the turbocharger itself as well as the plumbing such as the intercooler and intake piping.
