The Balanta (Guinea-Bissau Creole and Portuguese: balanta; French: balante; lit. “those who resist” in Mandinka) are an ethnic group found in Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Senegal and The Gambia. They are the largest ethnic group of Guinea-Bissau, representing more than one-quarter of the population. Despite their numbers, they have remained outside the colonial and postcolonial state because of their social organisation. The Balanta can be divided into 7 clans: Nhacra, Ganja, Naga, Mane, Patch, Sofa and Kentohe. The largest of which are the Balanta Kentohe.
Archaeologists believe that the people who became the Balanta migrated to present-day Guinea-Bissau in small groups between the 10th and 14th centuries CE. Oral tradition amongst the Balanta has it that they migrated westward from the area that is now Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to escape drought and wars. During the 19th century, they spread throughout the area that is now Guinea-Bissau and southern Senegal in order to resist the expansion of the Kaabu kingdom. Today, the Balanta are found in the modern-day countries of Senegal and Gambia but mostly reside in the southern and central regions of Guinea-Bissau.

Welcome to the African Ancestry Family 🧬 with Guinea Bissau and Congratulations 🎉🍾; I was 100% Mbundu of Angola on my father’s side and 100% Fulani on my mother’s side. Coincidentally, Amilcar Cabral, a revolutionary from Guinea Bissau, was one of my heroes who was assassinated during their country’s struggle but is an icon who truly was one who resisted against colonial rule from Portugal and his country would gain independence shortly after his death. Cabral and Fidel Castro of Cuba were close comrades.

Amen brotha Zo, I recently received my results from African Ancestry and my patriclan test came back %100 Balanta tribe people from Guinea-Bissau Africa. I'm doing more research my self definitely sharing with my son's. I deeply enjoy cashews too 😁, I found interesting that a traditional board game our people (Balanta) play is Ouri. I found that the game of Ouri is similar to backgammon presently. My father taught me that game. 🤔🤔🤔😁🙏🏿😇🖤💪🏿

Example : Most South Africans are Bantu, Original South Africans are the Khoisan people so if the same DNA test is done on someone from South Africa/Zambia/Zimbabwe Bantu people would it tell them which part of Africa they came from instead of Southern Africa ? Doubt it and also Zo's dad is very fair skin so that means he was likely mixed down the line ,the DNA test likely didn't reflect that (if it was true as stated down to the last point, it would have shown him something that explained his complexion).
