- Tuesday morning, Dec. 9th, 1980, ABC Television's "Good Morning America" featured extensive coverage of the tragic death of John Lennon. Hosts David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards interviewed many show business luminaries who knew John Lennon, or had worked with him during his career.
This is my video compilation of all the segments broadcast on "Good Morning America" that day, spanning most of the two hours dedicated to reporting on the death of Mr. Lennon. My entire compilation of all these "Good Morning America" segments has been edited into four separate videos.
In "Good Morning America" video one, David Hartman opens the 7 o'clock hour announcing the death of John Lennon. Mr. Hartman then introduces ABC news anchorman, Steve Bell, who provides all the "hard news" information surrounding Lennon's death. A news video is presented, featuring a voice-over by Geraldo Rivera, who had a friendship with John Lennon. In the last segment of video one, co-host Stephanie Edwards introduces Pat Collins, who files her news report live, just outside the front gate of the Dakota apartment building where John and his wife, Yoko Ono, had resided, and where John Lennon was shot. Here is the link to video #1: • The Death of John Lenn...
In "Good Morning America" video two, host David Hartman interviews Dave Sholin, of the RKO Radio Network and an air personality of KFRC Radio, San Francisco. Mr. Sholin had just conducted a three hour interview for radio with John and Yoko earlier in the day in which John Lennon was murdered. After the Dave Sholin interview concluded, our local ABC TV affiliate in Phoenix, AZ, Channel 3, KTVK TV, aired their local five minute news segment, "Good Morning Phoenix", featuring Ed Bradford. In the final segment of video two, David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards introduce ABC News anchor, Steve Bell, for another news segment. Here is the link to video #2: • The Death of John Lenn...
In "Good Morning America" video three, host David Hartman interviews disc jockey, "Murray the K" and music promoter, Sid Bernstein, on their memories of John Lennon. In the next segment, David Hartman interviews concert promoter, Don Kirshner, and Robert Palmer, music critic of The New York Times. The final segment of this video features co-hosts, David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards, closing out the first hour of "Good Morning America". Here is the link to video #3: • The Death of John Lenn...
In "Good Morning America" video four, David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards open the 8 o'clock hour. ABC News anchor, Steve Bell, presents more news information regarding John Lennon's death and ABC News correspondent, Rita Sands, reports from outside the Dakota apartment building. In the next segment, Geraldo Rivera presents the history of the Beatles and John Lennon's career. In the following segment, Stephanie Edwards introduces ABC News correspondent, Pat Collins, who reports live from outside the Dakota apartment building. Ms. Collins interviews a famous resident of the Dakota, columnist Rex Reed. Following that report by Pat Collins, ABC News anchor, Steve Bell, presents another news segment. In the final segment of this video, David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards close out the 8 o'clock hour of "Good Morning America". Here is the link to video #4: • The Death of John Lenn...
I was a yellow taxi driver in Manhattan that night. As the word spread I literally watched the city cry.
Interesting perspective to have that night

I remember this. I was 15. I woke up to get ready for school. I turned on the tv. I always listened to ABC news while getting ready. When I heard, I just sat down, in shock at first. I couldn't believe what I just heard. Then came the tears.
Same here Tammy. I was 18, got up to go to school, my mom was making breakfast. I noticed that the tv that was on top of the fridge wasn't on? Very unusual? I noticed my mom was crying and told me she had some very bad news. I cried like a baby. She told me she knew how I felt because she had felt the same way 17 years earlier....
About yoko gums or Taras ah thanks from the both of us.. Paul and Rocky you 2 are so funny yoko£
Wow...same exact story to the letter. I went to the Dakota with a few frineds for days after.
Vladimir Lipshitz felt the same about who?
Thanks for sharing your emotions.
This has to be the most shocking celebrity death of all time.
Yeah, up with river phoenix, michael jackson and JFK
+MrChubbymeat idk, River did alot of drugs, Michael didn't look the best around his time of death, and national leaders were targets long before Kennedy. John was just trying record some songs. I would say the shock was bigger that night outside the Dakota.
River was given a liquid that night by john frusciante ahaha but the rest, fair enough!
Steve Prefontaine was bigger.Nike has made a gold statue of only one of its shoe wearers-and it's of Prefontaine.
No he wasn't. He was another drunk driving statistic.
I was in high school when he was killed. I remember hearing Howard Cosell anounce it on Monday Night Football. The next day in band we didn't even play. The band director was so bummed out, he just had us sit there & listen to Beatles songs for the whole class.
Lynn Turman i heard the news while driving to school (freshman year) , my dad had the biggest shock , he just pulled out truck over and showed me about an hour of beatles songs talking about how there will never be another one , although a sad day , John lennons death brought me and my dad together for the love of music , thank you beatles
Yes that’s the way.
Awwww....😐😐😐well, for me, it was back in 2009 when MJ died and which my band instructor asked us to practice and play 'Heal The World'...☺
It's been 40 Years this year.. I was 14 years old back in 1980 and still remember that horrible day. You'll never be forgotten.. Rest in Peace
I feel more sorry for Julian than anyone. He really lost the relationship he was just really starting to have.
Yeah same here! Poor boy 😢 I love julian! He looks and sings just like his dad! ❤ xx
oh how history repeats itself. like father like son :(
You should feel more sorry for John he abandoned Julian and never gave him enough time
@@kevinburke6055doesn't even make sense
John's Lennon's death is the only celebrity murder that I would could consider an "assassination".
Contakum yep I agree.
? there are so many celebrity assassinations
i hear what your saying
I also hear what you're saying, but I would also put legendary blues guitarist Robert Johnson on that list. Although not entirely proven beyond any and all doubt, the circumstantial evidence surrounding his untimely death strongly indicates he was purposely poisoned.
@@famatu The key is in the word 'assassination'. Laziness with the language in the last several decades has resulted in the loosening of many definitions.
Assassination is one of these 'loosened' words.
It used to be reserved for the murder of political figures. It could also be used to describe a murder underpinned by a political motive.
I was 9yrs old and was a new fan of the Beatles. Loved them instantly. I remember vividly hearing this on the news and being so heartbroken, and shocked
I was 9 years old and had already been a Beatles-Lennon fanatic for about a year. I remember hearing my mom crying in the kitchen around 6am with the radio telling the news. My memories are fuzzy and yet clear in some spots. I recall watching THIS VERY show on a 13" color TV in my mom's room, and not wanting to go to school because I wanted to watch as much news as I could (but mom said no...). The next memory is going into my 4th grade class and one of the kids said "I heard The Beatles died last night" in a sarcastic tone, because I was the only nine year old Beatlemaniac in my class. It was surreal....
BlackAndWhiteBand You had wonderful musical taste to be so young at the time! Good for you.
1980....just graduated from high school..watching MNF when Howard Cosell gave the news flash.... as tears ran down my face .What a way to start adulthood. R.I.P. John Winston Lennon
Now did you graduate from high school in New York or another state? I wasn't even born yet but almost was. I grew up in the Mid-South.
I was born a year later after his death, I grown to love him through his music, seeing this footage makes me cry every time
Cynthia Buford same here!!
1981 👍 nice i was born 1986. but i still like John's music anyways.
Cynthia Buford my brother was born one year after George died
2:47 Very sad to see Lennon like this...
We'll never recover from Lennon's death

I was 18 when John Lennon died. I was listening to the radio when it was announced. Stunned cannot begin to describe my initial reaction. Such a senseless tragedy.

Wow...I remember this like it was yesterday. I was shattered by the news. Couldn't believe it. Still can't at times.
It's been 38 years since the death of a legend. His songs will remain forever, his legacy is one that is unmatched in this era. Time goes by and I was fortunate enough to listen to him when he was alive. Rest in peace John Lennon!
Watching this on CZcams makes it feel like it happened recently.
John Lennon is one of those people who you know lives on after death though.
He left such a legacy. I'm sure he'd hate the world the way it is today. Miss you John and thank you for sharing your talent with the world.
I remember I was 17 at the time studying for a science test at my kitchen table on a Monday night and my father was watching the football game in the living room and I hear Howard Cosell announce the tragic news and my father saying in a shocked manner John Lennon was shot. I remember putting my head down on the kitchen table and feeling so sad.
bocobob yeah no shit man I was 16 and saw it on the news
LOL. I was in my room studying for an exam as well. My parents called my into our living room to tell me the sad news. I couldn't believe it.
Wow! I was also 17 and watched as Howard Cosell announced it. I had just finished studying for an algebra exam. It hit me really hard, because I had just lost my closest cousin to a motorcycle accident a few days before. December 1980 was one of the worst months of my life.
I was 16. Doing the exact same thing , when I heard Cosell announce it.
NOBODY ( except me) was watching near the end of "Little
House on the Prairie" when there was a news bulletin - I think it was Dan Rather who said , " Ex-Beatle John Lennon
has been shot, details are sketchy at this time. We don't know if he's in serious condition, critical condition,
or dead - and then they went back to regular programming!!! After 10 minutes, I thought " I' m not waiting for the 5 o'clock news at 10 P.M." so I grabbed the
portable radio turned it to KFWB and they confirmed it
that Lennon was dead ( what a bummer) ...
I was 14 and watching Monday Night Football when Howard made the announcement. It was horrific. I had to go to my room to cry.
Thank you so much for this upload.
Still breaks my heart...
I was too young to understand the impact John Lennon's death had on the world. This GMA video finally puts into perspective the impact his death had around the world. It's so heart breaking.
Cannot imagine having to tell little Sean what happened
I was in college. Home for Christmas break. A bunch of buddies and myself were watching MNF when Cosell announced his death. Stunned doesn't do justice to my feelings. I was thrilled he had started to record again. Like many there was a since of selfishness in my grief. I was sad that I wouldn't get the benefit of John's genius for the next decade. The response worldwide to his death was unlike anything I've witnessed...ever. I was too young to remember Kennedy's death.
this made me cry again. I'll never get over it
mrheem44-I was in New York City the night John Lennon was shot Dec.8th 1980. I was 2 blocks away on 74th and Broadway . I was going into a store and a cop came running pass me and shouted that "someone had been shot". The next morning I learned that it was John Lennon. I will never forget that "creepy night" when he was shot, it still seems like a bad dream. RIP John Lennon
I don't think any fan of The Beatles will ever get over John Lennon's murder. Simply put, we all lost something that day.
Lennon didn't kill anyone, he didn't start a war, he didn't campaign, he didn't keep the money of the whole world. No politician in the world will get as much love and gratitude for his life as he does. They can't beat him ever. (they may have expelled him from his body, but his soul, his thoughts and songs moved into millions.)
Leading off with “In My Life”-my very favorite Beatle’s song
Thank you for sharing this !!!
I was 9 since then I became a Beatlemaniac it was really impressive see those people so devasted in front of Dakota.
so much more to offer.
I heard about it at 4:00 am when I went out on my large paper route. I made $80.00 per week, plus gas. At 4:00 am, on the radio, they knew the entire Mark David Chapman life story. I marveled at that, how could they know such details so quickly. Still I think it is strange.
that is strange🤔
I was 16 years old, at home less than 1 mile away. They interrupted Jonny Carson’s monologue to break the news and I heard my parents screaming from their bedroom. My brothers and parents spent the rest of the night sobbing. It was one of those “what the fuck’s going on” moments that still makes me fall apart.
That was a day I'll never forget. I can go back to the moment immediately.
I had just turned 9, on 9 th December. I then didn't really realise what an immense loss that was, but the rest of my life I've spent simply wondering what wrong had we done to be robbed of an opportunity witness this great artist weave more and more of his magic in our lives.
I was 8 years old I cried sobbed for days x x x x edit I still have tears
Let the Beatles love on🤘love from England❤
John Lennon forever ❤
I was 20 years old visiting Toronto having been a huge Beatles fan people starting calling me all day and night, some of whom I have no idea to this day how they found me there, people I had not heard from since I was in elementary school saying "you were the one who introduced me to his music, thank you so much." That night I went to a huge memorial for John in Toronto, the mood there was beyond words. I'll never forget where I was when I found out, it broke the world that day.
I lived in Toronto at that time--the night after his death-everyone gathered in the courtyard of Toronto City Hall (Nathan Philips Square) and were handed "sparklers" and everyone sang "Give Peace a Chance"
It feels weird to hear the death of someone you’ll never know but I thought I kinda knew him but I don’t the realty it’s crazy
I will always love John!!! RIP
Im watching this now in Jan.10,2020....and just after a few minutes I start writing this post because i needed to get a grip on my emotions. Ive been a huge fan of his 4ever and i still can't handle this tragic news. We all miss you John
I loved him; made the World a better place.
If you could record the emotional shock waves they would be off the scale , like gravitational waves after the big bang they will reverberate forever in the hearts and souls of humanity
paul bowman Very true!
I heard the news on the radio. I was 20 years old when it happened. Still sad today. Will always love John and his music ♥️
This day I felt part of me had died, too
i wasnt born in a world with john lennon, however, his music impacted my youth and still today, i was raised on the beatles thanks to my dad. i remember asking if we can see them live, then my dad said john lennon was killed before i was born, i cried, and i cried again when harrison died.
I fell asleep earlier on the night of 8th. of December 1980. I woke up around 10:30 PM. I left the TV on channel 5 out of New York, suddenly I really woke up, the news castor said that John Lennon had been shot and is in critical condition at Roosevelt Hospital. About 2 minutes or so later it was announced that John Lennon had died. I couldn't go back to sleep. I turned on the radio. Beatle songs began to play. The first one I heard was Yes it is. That was my senior year of high school. I grew up listening to the Beatles, a big thank you I give to my older brother and two older sisters. That night a part of all us was taken. Thank you John for sharing your love and talent. You will never be forgotten.
Still brings a tear.
It's been 40 years R.I.P John Lennon☮️💗
My Idol John Lennon 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I was a young child and shook up from this as my mother broke the news. She lit candles and made an alter with a poster of Lennon. Below was the altar if candles. My heart knew the sadness as people all over world gathered together to mourn as I felt. It was tragic. It was same time after that I got my first dolly, bonnie blue and flew to Chicago to live with my grandparents. This effected me so much my whole life but rather remembered how it effected my mother who sang and played guitar as her kids sat on the floor singing the bologna song by Oscar Meyer. Being young never dies. I still remember this like yesterday.
I remember that day,i was 11,it ran on t.v. all day, very sad day, lost a light in this world that day😔
This is one of the biggest memories of my life. I was only about 5-6 yrs old, had no clue who John lennon was , but remember my dad being really angry and upset about. I couldn’t understand why as he didn’t know him etc. I remember getting up very very early in the morning and going downstairs, everyone else (mum, dad, older sister) we are still asleep. I turned on the tv, all that was on was ceefax news, and it was all going crazy about this guy called John lennon who had been shot and killed. I sensed this was some thing important, but as there were no cartoons on I carried on playing with the cat, and playing with my Star Wars figures. A couple of hours later I went back upstairs and my dad was just getting up and going into the bathroom. I described what I’d seen on the tv about this guy called John lennon had been killed. My dad was gutted, he couldn’t beleive it. I thought it was one of his workmates or some thing (the innocence of a young kid). Mad day. Sad day.
since i was in grade school when christmass is around the corner, i always excited to hear the christmas song being composed of john lennon
as a 15 year old girl who dislikes the nature of my generation, i would love to have had the chance to live in my parent's time. however, this event gives me second thoughts because i simply don't know how i would survive if i had to live through this day. i probably would have a heart attack or something.
Ashley :0 Listen to their music. It is just so fantastic.I was 14 when they came out.1964..Everything was Beatles. The greatest of all times
i share the feeling, i would have been another one of the fans who committed suicide... maybe i was 😳
I was 5 years old and I remember this day like yesterday
John Lennon was a genius. Without John there would have been no Beatles. The only thing worse than a world without John Lennon would have been a world without the Beatles.
Interesting to see GMA from way back when. I remember the days when it was called "AM America" in the mid 1970s. I was a fan of Good Morning America for many years. I stopped watching morning TV about 15 years ago.
*_Anyone know what happened to that album that John signed?_*
I was 9 years old, I remember it well
The coverage went on for nearly 3 to 6 months... everyone was sad and shocked.
Mr.Lennon:Until Today I Miss you So much! RIP…😦
I was watching the Monday Night Football game and heard the news. I was a Beatles fan and a fan of John's music!
I was at work in salon backroom and so upset. why??? i just felt like protesting something like John and Yoko did. God bless his soul , Yoko and family. Your music lives on as a blessing to all of us.
i can't think of anyone nowadays whose death would cause so much sadness to the world like lennon's did. is that a good or a bad thing?
I would say it was a tie between that, JFK and Elvis Presley. And with JFK, the whole world really mourned including the adversaries of the US at the time. And Elvis was a big hero of all the British rock groups as well as others worldwide. So I guess it depends on your own perspective and who you were a bigger fan of.
idiotesque for much younger folks it was kurt cobain
Michael Jackson I believe had the same affect
Project Pat would have a very similar effect.
2Pac the world still mourns him
John lennon is still alive inside our heart❤
When "Good Morning America" first went on the air in the fall of 1975, it was produced by ABC's entertainment division (except for the news updates every half-hour, which were produced by ABC News).
But I believe "GMA" was transferred in it entirety to ABC News shortly after Roone Arledge took over as president of ABC News, so "GMA" was in fact an ABC News production well before December of 1980.
I Think if i was watching this that morning i would been crying all morning long in anger in hurtness and in tragedy i am going to be 44 next tuesday this happened one week before i turned 4 and since i turned 13 years old back in the late 80's i became a beatles fan and still am to this day every year when i think of that fateful night i was like why did this happen why i could imagine if he was alive today what he would think what has happened since then but no matter what i am still a beatles fan
I was 5 yrs old and I don't understand it at time that a legend
The day the music died
RIP John What a guy What legend
I was getting ready for school in Liverpool England I was 13, so sad.
Imagine all the people.😢
My dad had just graduated high school that year and he was very upset.
I was 17 and working at my first job that night at a skating rink. My boss came out and told us all. I knew John's name at the time, but didn't realize he was a Beatle, anymore than I realized McCartney was in a band before Wings. I didn't understand the full impact or the impact of the Beatles on the world. It was just 10 years since they broke up, and I didn't realize then how horrible it really was. I sure do now.
I remeber this day ...in shock. John was my fav beatle...they were all good...John was peaceful ,
Sad times.
I'd like to see TODAY show's coverage.
I love his song:(Imagine:(
I was 22 years old working at Thrifty's Drug Store when we heard the news over the speakers. It was a really cold day for So. California.
R.I.P. John Lennon
One of the fathers of rock and roll
We love you John Lennon
Still hard to believe after all these years . I was in a far away place in that far away time when I heard the news. I of course remember where I was and what I was doing and I was stopped dead in my tracks by this news . Its odd that I had been speaking to coworkers of a possible Beatles reunion on that same day . I was 18 years years old . If you do the math the Beatles broke up when I was 8 years old and there in is the magic of this man and these guys who changed the world cause there is still an 8 year old who is being amazed by his music ....Missing you my friend
"Good Morning America" co-hostess Joan Lunden was on vacation and couldn't get back to New York in-time for that morning's show.
I thought Lunden came back to New York in-time for the December 10th edition.
I was probably getting ready for preschool when this aired
so sad
Aweful, aweful way to die. I'll always remember this,. Was an early teen and very upset at the time. I grew up to be polar opposite of John's politics but loved his music, his brilliance and artistry.
What a shame.
Double FANTASY a great album I t would have been nice if he did a tour of shows with those songs it would have been throughout so great.
So Sad
see you in heaven John Lennon my idol
Omg John Coleman! I miss him! He was the weatherman on KUSI for a long time!
In my life life i'll loved you John.
John is dead murder chapman is still alive... WHYY??
oo131193oo
Why is John dead? I don’t know.
Why is the killer still alive? Because John strived for peace and nonviolence in the world, as he had strived for them in himself. The murderer killed, _we must be better than him._
he was a pacifist like me would not want revenge
Yes, Chapman is still alive. He has to live the rest of his life locked away in a prison cell. He is in solitary confinement, he is constantly watched by security and police, he can't do anything without permission anymore, he can't even commit suicide. I wager even he knows that if he ever got released, there are hundreds of people out there who could and would kill him. That's his only lot in life now, and that is a fate worse than death.
He’s getting his ass hammered in jail
I was 18, and had just got home from shooting pool when nightline came on and said that Lennon was dead. After a few minutes, I said screw it and went back to the bar and got freakin drunk!
David Kern LMAO that’s awesome and totally justified.
I remember my mom told me about the news in the morning.
The lennon report brought me here !
