  • Tuesday morning, Dec. 9th, 1980, ABC Television's "Good Morning America" featured extensive coverage of the tragic death of John Lennon. Hosts David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards interviewed many show business luminaries who knew John Lennon, or had worked with him during his career.
This is my video compilation of all the segments broadcast on "Good Morning America" that day, spanning most of the two hours dedicated to reporting on the death of Mr. Lennon. My entire compilation of all these "Good Morning America" segments has been edited into four separate videos.
In "Good Morning America" video one, David Hartman opens the 7 o'clock hour announcing the death of John Lennon. Mr. Hartman then introduces ABC news anchorman, Steve Bell, who provides all the "hard news" information surrounding Lennon's death. A news video is presented, featuring a voice-over by Geraldo Rivera, who had a friendship with John Lennon. In the last segment of video one, co-host Stephanie Edwards introduces Pat Collins, who files her news report live, just outside the front gate of the Dakota apartment building where John and his wife, Yoko Ono, had resided, and where John Lennon was shot. Here is the link to video #1: • The Death of John Lenn...
In "Good Morning America" video two, host David Hartman interviews Dave Sholin, of the RKO Radio Network and an air personality of KFRC Radio, San Francisco. Mr. Sholin had just conducted a three hour interview for radio with John and Yoko earlier in the day in which John Lennon was murdered. After the Dave Sholin interview concluded, our local ABC TV affiliate in Phoenix, AZ, Channel 3, KTVK TV, aired their local five minute news segment, "Good Morning Phoenix", featuring Ed Bradford. In the final segment of video two, David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards introduce ABC News anchor, Steve Bell, for another news segment. Here is the link to video #2: • The Death of John Lenn...
In "Good Morning America" video three, host David Hartman interviews disc jockey, "Murray the K" and music promoter, Sid Bernstein, on their memories of John Lennon. In the next segment, David Hartman interviews concert promoter, Don Kirshner, and Robert Palmer, music critic of The New York Times. The final segment of this video features co-hosts, David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards, closing out the first hour of "Good Morning America". Here is the link to video #3: • The Death of John Lenn...
In "Good Morning America" video four, David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards open the 8 o'clock hour. ABC News anchor, Steve Bell, presents more news information regarding John Lennon's death and ABC News correspondent, Rita Sands, reports from outside the Dakota apartment building. In the next segment, Geraldo Rivera presents the history of the Beatles and John Lennon's career. In the following segment, Stephanie Edwards introduces ABC News correspondent, Pat Collins, who reports live from outside the Dakota apartment building. Ms. Collins interviews a famous resident of the Dakota, columnist Rex Reed. Following that report by Pat Collins, ABC News anchor, Steve Bell, presents another news segment. In the final segment of this video, David Hartman and Stephanie Edwards close out the 8 o'clock hour of "Good Morning America". Here is the link to video #4: • The Death of John Lenn...

I remember this. I was 15. I woke up to get ready for school. I turned on the tv. I always listened to ABC news while getting ready. When I heard, I just sat down, in shock at first. I couldn't believe what I just heard. Then came the tears.

Same here Tammy. I was 18, got up to go to school, my mom was making breakfast. I noticed that the tv that was on top of the fridge wasn't on? Very unusual? I noticed my mom was crying and told me she had some very bad news. I cried like a baby. She told me she knew how I felt because she had felt the same way 17 years earlier....

@@famatu The key is in the word 'assassination'. Laziness with the language in the last several decades has resulted in the loosening of many definitions.
Assassination is one of these 'loosened' words.
It used to be reserved for the murder of political figures. It could also be used to describe a murder underpinned by a political motive.

I was 9 years old and had already been a Beatles-Lennon fanatic for about a year. I remember hearing my mom crying in the kitchen around 6am with the radio telling the news. My memories are fuzzy and yet clear in some spots. I recall watching THIS VERY show on a 13" color TV in my mom's room, and not wanting to go to school because I wanted to watch as much news as I could (but mom said no...). The next memory is going into my 4th grade class and one of the kids said "I heard The Beatles died last night" in a sarcastic tone, because I was the only nine year old Beatlemaniac in my class. It was surreal....

or dead - and then they went back to regular programming!!! After 10 minutes, I thought " I' m not waiting for the 5 o'clock news at 10 P.M." so I grabbed the

I was a young child and shook up from this as my mother broke the news. She lit candles and made an alter with a poster of Lennon. Below was the altar if candles. My heart knew the sadness as people all over world gathered together to mourn as I felt. It was tragic. It was same time after that I got my first dolly, bonnie blue and flew to Chicago to live with my grandparents. This effected me so much my whole life but rather remembered how it effected my mother who sang and played guitar as her kids sat on the floor singing the bologna song by Oscar Meyer. Being young never dies. I still remember this like yesterday.

This is one of the biggest memories of my life. I was only about 5-6 yrs old, had no clue who John lennon was , but remember my dad being really angry and upset about. I couldn’t understand why as he didn’t know him etc. I remember getting up very very early in the morning and going downstairs, everyone else (mum, dad, older sister) we are still asleep. I turned on the tv, all that was on was ceefax news, and it was all going crazy about this guy called John lennon who had been shot and killed. I sensed this was some thing important, but as there were no cartoons on I carried on playing with the cat, and playing with my Star Wars figures. A couple of hours later I went back upstairs and my dad was just getting up and going into the bathroom. I described what I’d seen on the tv about this guy called John lennon had been killed. My dad was gutted, he couldn’t beleive it. I thought it was one of his workmates or some thing (the innocence of a young kid). Mad day. Sad day.

John Lennon was a genius. Without John there would have been no Beatles. The only thing worse than a world without John Lennon would have been a world without the Beatles.

Interesting to see GMA from way back when. I remember the days when it was called "AM America" in the mid 1970s. I was a fan of Good Morning America for many years. I stopped watching morning TV about 15 years ago.

I would say it was a tie between that, JFK and Elvis Presley. And with JFK, the whole world really mourned including the adversaries of the US at the time. And Elvis was a big hero of all the British rock groups as well as others worldwide. So I guess it depends on your own perspective and who you were a bigger fan of.

When "Good Morning America" first went on the air in the fall of 1975, it was produced by ABC's entertainment division (except for the news updates every half-hour, which were produced by ABC News).
But I believe "GMA" was transferred in it entirety to ABC News shortly after Roone Arledge took over as president of ABC News, so "GMA" was in fact an ABC News production well before December of 1980.

I was 17 and working at my first job that night at a skating rink. My boss came out and told us all. I knew John's name at the time, but didn't realize he was a Beatle, anymore than I realized McCartney was in a band before Wings. I didn't understand the full impact or the impact of the Beatles on the world. It was just 10 years since they broke up, and I didn't realize then how horrible it really was. I sure do now.

Still hard to believe after all these years . I was in a far away place in that far away time when I heard the news. I of course remember where I was and what I was doing and I was stopped dead in my tracks by this news . Its odd that I had been speaking to coworkers of a possible Beatles reunion on that same day . I was 18 years years old . If you do the math the Beatles broke up when I was 8 years old and there in is the magic of this man and these guys who changed the world cause there is still an 8 year old who is being amazed by his music ....Missing you my friend

Why is John dead? I don’t know.
Why is the killer still alive? Because John strived for peace and nonviolence in the world, as he had strived for them in himself. The murderer killed, _we must be better than him._

Yes, Chapman is still alive. He has to live the rest of his life locked away in a prison cell. He is in solitary confinement, he is constantly watched by security and police, he can't do anything without permission anymore, he can't even commit suicide. I wager even he knows that if he ever got released, there are hundreds of people out there who could and would kill him. That's his only lot in life now, and that is a fate worse than death.
