The Troubling Truth About John Lennon

  • John Lennon was undeniably a man of contradictions. Even though he wrote music that was anti-violence, he was often a violent man in his personal life. He had almost no relationship with his father, and sadly, this pattern repeated with his older son Julian, although he was quite close to his younger son, Sean. In addition, Lennon struggled with addiction, was investigated by the United States government, and even faced allegations of plagiarism. From the deaths of multiple family members who were close to him to the tragic shooting that ended his life, here’s the troubling truth about John Lennon.

    John made good music and wrote amazing songs but after I read Cynthia Lennon's book about her life with him, I never felt the same way about him again. He was absolutely, horribly abusive to Cyn and Julian. I agreed with Julian when he said that John was a hypocrite and it hurts me to know that a man who wrote such lovely songs could be so mean to his own wife and child. Bless them both.

      @Lynn Granata Oh really? So him physically abusing Cyn before they even got married was supposed to be pleasant? (John, himself, admitted to being physically abusive to previous girlfriends as well.) What about constantly demeaning her with verbal abuse by constantly telling her what absolute rubbish she was and then doing the same to their son? Or maybe showing preference to his second son with Yoko after years of treating his older child like an unwanted mistake? Not to mention parading his constant infidelities in front of her, including Yoko who was brought to their home while Cyn was off on holiday and came back to find them both there. I'm sorry, I seem to have forgotten that those are extremely desirable traits to want in a spouse/romantic partner/a human being in general.
      In other words, yes, he was bloody mean. Use your common sense, Miss.

      1. I'm not being hypocritical
      2. I am against domestic violence since I am a domestic violence survivor.
      3. The subject of the video is John Lennon, so yes, I would only talk about John Lennon in this comment, although it's a fact that numerous other men were abusers and misogynists. To bring up such a wide point during a video about one specific person is just weird.
      4. I'm not "saying what I want" about John Lennon. It's a FACT that he was abusive to both of his wives and his son Julian.

      The John that began with the Beatles...in fact, all of the Beatles, from the beginning were all very different people at the end of the 60s..
      Sometimes relationships are lost, or, irrevocably altered by the pressures of fame and a press that loves slinging mud..true, embellished, or, totally false..
      That has not changed to this day.

    I think this was a fair portrayal of Lennon”s personal failings. Like most people he was neither a saint nor a monster. He was a human being with a poetic bent and musical talent, and was barely 23 when the Beatles landed in New York in early 1964. The love and peace he later spoke and sang about was his vision for humanity during the time of the Vietnam War. He wasn’t calling for failed marriages to endure, or absentee fathers to repent. One of his endearing traits was the honest and frank assessments he made of himself amidst the pitfalls of celebritum. Kurt Cobain said something to the effect he would rather be hated for what he is, than be adored for what he is not, and I suspect John held a similar sentiment. Despite personal issues, his life can be viewed as a charmed one. While many a talented guitar player/songwriter/vocalist languishes in obscurity, having a group of friends from youth that play music together and getting the opportunity to work with a music producer like George Martin at EMI, becoming the most beloved and critically acclaimed Rock band the world has ever known...and then getting permission from your wife to work out your mid-life crisis issues with her young intern! This is pretty cool stuff. And then out of nowhere comes this religious schizophrenic, Mark Chapman, to greet him at the entrance to his apartment building one fine night in December, 1980, firing five rounds into Lennon”s back. The only interaction John had ever had with this fellow was autographing an album cover earlier in the day at the killer”s request. That”s the real troubling truth.

    The problem with videos about John Lennon is that they can only shed light on what was a very short life. We never got the chance to see what John Lennon would have done with the rest of his life, his family, his friends and his band mates. Many of his friends and family have stated that John Lennon was about to mend all his relationships with family and friends when he was assassinated by he who shall remain nameless. Also, as a fiftysomething man, I can tell you with absolute certainty that a man at 40, John Lennon's age when he was murdered, is still quite immature. To see what I mean, look at any of the Beatles at that age, and you'll see just how immature they were at 40 and how different they are today (or, in George Harrison's case, up until 2001).

    John realised towards the end of his life he had been a terrible father to Julian and was really trying to bond with his son. He began phoning him more often (he actually played the whole Double Fantasy album to Julian down the phone before it was released and wanted Julian's opinion and thoughts on it), for his 17th birthday he wanted to give the gift of a painting of the two of them. Near his death he told Julian to look out for a white feather whenever he would pass away and Julian would know his dad is fine and he's looking out for him. Julian was presented with a white feather by a tribe and he believes it really was a sign from his father like John said all those years ago, so Julian created a charity and called it the white feather foundation.
    Also, John was writing diaries in the mid 70s onwards and he told his personal assistant Fred Seaman in Bermuda 1980 that if anything was to happen to himself in the near future then he'd want Julian to have his diaries as he felt they could help Julian get to know his father better and John felt Julian deserved to know more about him. When John did die, Fred tried taking the diaries back to England to give them to Julian as John wanted but Yoko got him arrested for stealing property and Yoko got them back. Julian has never seen those diaries, even though it was what John wanted. A quote from John in 1980 is: "I hadn't seen my first son grow up and now here's a 17 year old man on thd phone talking about motorbikes. I was not there for his childhood at all. I was on tour, I don't know how the game works, but there's a price to pay for innattention to childen. And if I don't give him attention from zero to five, then i'm damn well gonna have to give it to him from sixteen to twenty, because it's owed. It's like the law of the universe."
    Also, Julian said in 1988 in an interview for a documentary called Imagine about John he said "There was no wall facing us anymore, but it had been knocked down and we could actually (pretends to be on the phone) 'hi dad I'd like to come and see you is that okay?' 'Yeah'. It's hard to explain emotions in dealing with that situation especially when we were getting so close."

    The reason John was the Beatle seen as the most artistic was because his music was self revealing. McCartney was undoubtedly the better musician and more talented songwriter... but listening to McCartney’s songs tells you nothing about McCartney; nothing about his inner life of turmoil.
    Lennon’s songs, from even early on, reveal his aggressive, sad, and self doubting nature and his struggles with trying to grow up into a more self realized adult.
    From his songs “I’m a loser” and “Run for your life”, revealing his abusiveness, and insecurity, All the way thru “across the universe" and his solo work Lennon’s music charts his arc as a flawed human being trying to figure himself out. All his songs have an edge of personal pain to them that McCartney’s songs lack- and when they collaborated, McCartney’s contributions to Lennon’s songs were always softening that edge, while Lennon’s contributions to McCartney’s songs were to add some edge.
    I love McCartney’s ability to bang out a delightful and catchy tune. But I don’t know the man thru his music. Lennon, I knew. I didn’t always like him as a man, but I always respected his raw honesty about who he was in his art.

      I dont agree for a second that Paul was the better songwriter. Paul became a catchier tunesmith but that is all. Their first hits were mostly John or with John. He truly led the way. The best Beatles tunes in my mind were primarily written by John. Later on Paul did an interesting thing, he copied Johns style to answer himself in a song for balance. He couldn't keep it up and lost the ability. Paul became a very good songwriter after a few years and wrote 4-5 great ones without John. He was never better in my mind. I have to give it 60/40 to John. The Beatles songs I don't like at all were written by George and Paul, rarely by John. I also think Paul was a bit underhanded and a bit of a musical thief if he can be called that. Certainly a tunesmith although a very, very good one.

    • @christopherpardell4418
      @christopherpardell4418 Před 4 lety +8

      finnibert lunchiken Nah- when it comes to pure popularity... McCartney’s tunes outperformed every other beatle. McCartney clearly had a better sense of pop music appeal... but to be clear, I do not think that being more popular is even remotely to be confused with a ‘better song’. Penny lane got more airplay than strawberry fields- it was undeniably catchier and did not ask the listener to think much... but Lennon’s tune spoke on a much more intimate level. His work was darker, often sadder. His songs more about how he lost the girl than getting her.
      I agree that McCartney’s best work was when he was trying to emulate johns more personal style- and in many cases, John’s added bridge is what made a McCartney song show greater depth... but at the same time johns solo work- while raw and evocative, lost some of the melodic mastery that Paul brought to their collaborations.
      Tho many of their songs as the Beatles were written independently of each other, they still honed them and refined them together in the studio... and their musical rivalry lent both of them something they each lost after the breakup.
      I think paul’s pure musicality added to john’s lyrical brilliance, and vice versa.

      it's pretty obvious that musically they are about equal in all respects. finnibert The Beatles fanbase reminds me a lot of fanbases like Star Wars. They constantly bully Yoko. I think the whole manipulation thing is much more of a public persona people have formed around Yoko than an actual reality. John was always a great guy deep within himself, and eventually he channeled into that with his last ten years. But the trauma he experienced, the sudden fame, the unintended pregnancy and a marriage he was forced into because of society, all of that just perpetuated his issues with no mental health services that we have today to help him in ways that he needed. Like Mccartney has said, he could’ve turned out so much worse given the circumstances of his life. I’m inspired by and admire how he worked to change. Not condoning any of his wrongdoings, just saying I think this is a case of cancel culture, something I hate.

      @@StupidBeagleReviews I definitely see the cancel culture thing present. I think some of it could even be called revenge politics.
      Regarding Yoko, I thought she may have been unfairly treated but the hate for her doesn't just seem to be with outsiders but those that had direct contact with John and/or her. ( The Beatles, Lennon's family, Cynthia, various musicians, employees, May Pang etc ). I haven't heard a lot of positives about Yoko. I could only base it on that.

    • @StupidBeagleReviews
      @StupidBeagleReviews Před 4 lety +3

      I think like John, she had a lot of problems and did some crappy things, turning John on to heroin for example. And she was also really fricken weird, weirder than John, which is saying something, and her music is rarely enjoyed because it’s so radically different, so I think a lot of people just saw her as talentless while John was a genius. Pretty much all the people you mentioned ended up forgiving Yoko mostly though, especially the other Beatles. I could talk about this forever, John’s decisions were his own, even to the point in which Yoko kicked him out for a year. In their last five years, they were a power couple and made each other better. She also helped with John’s solo career a lot, and I have a minority opinion in which John’s solo career rivals the Beatles themselves. It’s a complicated thing with very vocal toxic Beatles fans perpetuating myth.

      LSD isn't an addictive, hedonistic drug like heroin is, people who've never been around the drug scene really need to stop just naming things like it means something. People love to talk about the LSD and the weed, but those were never really the big issues for these musicians, it was way more often barbiturates and alcohol. Despite the differences in their severity, drugs like alcohol, heroin, Xanax and other sedative pills, are there to distract you and make you "forget" your problems temporarily. Acid and mushrooms are some potent anti-addiction drugs because they make you THINK, really hard, about what's wrong and right about your behavior. I still credit a couple of trips for getting me off of heroin and Xanax. The trip literally turned the people near me into a metaphor for right and wrong behaviors, my choices were colored with feelings, of righteousness and beauty, or of darkness and self-harm: which did I want to pick?

      @Jenni Graham You said he didn’t learned his lesson with Julian. Actually, he did. He stopped his career to raise his second kid, and was coming to good terms with Julian by 1979/1980. Even Julian said, with a lot of frustration, that Lennon was killed when everything was fine between them. But those good months did not erased the bad years, Julian wasn’t telling a lie when he said that John was an hypocrite, because he was talking about the man he knew as a kid, not the guy that was a real to father to Sean. Those 5 years out of the music business made the difference on him. Lennon was killed during the best time of his life, as a person.

    hypocrisy is part of the human experience. I believe that artists have a complex reality they present , and I still think that John lennon's songs promote peace and love , despite whatever happened in his life. there is no perfection or purity in the human experience , and there is no doubt John Lennon was a genius , whose musical talents are without doubt. no matter what anyone says.

      Absolutely. It sounds like he didn't like some parts of himself, like the violent tendencies. I think he was likely conflicted on a lot of things, I don't see why some people think it's so crazy he had expensive homes when he wrote "imagine no possessions"...any rich person would indulge to an extent. I don't think he could have come up with "Imagine" if he didn't feel it on some level. I also do think the animosity he felt for his own father likely contributed to his own failing to be a good father to Julian. Most people are both good and bad.

    It's easy to be appalled and outraged at the domestic abuse John Lennon's spouses suffered at the hands of the man, or even Marvin Gaye's for that matter (his 2nd wife Janis Ian published her memoirs recently which have some truly disturbing details in them).
    What's really hypocritical is learning from the past and not taking any action against domestic abuse happening today. Whenever someone brings us the 'Lennon was a hitter" argument I like to remind them of this fact.
