Dr. Henry Kissinger Addresses the 2023 Scholar-Statesman Event

Former U.S. Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Dr. Henry Kissinger pays tribute to Institute Segal Executive Director and Howard P. Berkowitz Chair in U.S. Middle East Policy Dr. Robert Satloff on receiving the Institute's 2023 Scholar-Statesman Award. This videotaped message was presented at the 2023 Scholar-Statesman Award gala on November 16, 2023, in New York City.
The Scholar-Statesman Award celebrates outstanding leaders who, through their public service and professional achievements, exemplify the idea that sound scholarship and a discerning knowledge of history are essential to wise and effective policy and the advancement of peace and security in the Middle East. Previous Scholar-Statesman recipients include U.S. President Bill Clinton, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, and King Abdullah II ibn Hussein of Jordan.
Dr. Kissinger said: “It is the greatest pleasure to celebrate Rob Satloff’s thirty years as director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Rob has been both a leading scholar for this crucial region and an inspiration to foreign policymakers. From an early age, Rob has dedicated himself to the history, language, and culture of the Middle East and at the same time a commitment to his Jewish background and the State of Israel. Rob has never shrunk from the complexity and has affirmed three principles: One, that America should not shrink from its inherent role in the region. Two, that progress in the region can only be achieved step-by-step and cannot devote itself to solutions which stress the opposite. Three, America must help devise a strategy for itself and should play a leadership role in the Near East. In this manner, we can achieve both peace and progress. And I thank Rob Satloff for having devoted thirty years of his life to this great task.”
