  • There are stages of minimalism that almost all of us go though. over the past year as I've been on a journey towards living a more minimalistic life I realize that there's stages of minimalism that I have gone through and looking around and talking with other people I have discovered that other people go through a lot of stages of minimalism as well well they might not be the same for everyone I believe you'll be able to relate to some most or even all of these!

I finally told my family I don't even want to do a gift exchange this year. I'm 31 years old and make my own money. I don't need anything. I just want to have a potluck and play some games with family. My dad made the comment that they'll still get me some little things like Christmas pajamas. I said I still have all the sets of pajamas that they've gotten me for the last three years. I don't need more than three sets of Christmas pajamas. I don't really even need the three that I have. 🤦😅 It's crazy what we do for the sake of gift giving and consumerism.

    1) watched minimalism the movie
    2) purging and philosophy brought to another level
    3) selling stuff on ebay
    4) freecycle stuff
    5) no-buy year
    6) old collections (rock memorabilia, watches, etc) can finally be purged
    7) some sentimental stuff can finally be purged
    8) grey or white the patterns and off colors
    9) trade the thing that works for a better more minimal looking version of that thing
    10) rounds of purging get progressively harder
    11) quit job, re-eval friendships and activities and figure out how to earn passive income.

I told him afterwards, he was very disappointed with himself. We started to sort out his clothes, sold some and then donated most. Now he has 15 shirts and is very happy with it. I've moved 23 times, for the first 12 moves or so, I always ended up with more and more to move. And it was always this major, life sucking event...
    every time.
Then we discovered minimalism, and each time we moved after that, we had less and less to move, and I can tell you of all of the things that I have owned, and therefore have gotten rid of through my minimalism journey I can say there are only a few things that I miss because they were sentimental.
The rest of the stuff I don't even remember and I certainly do not miss it.
    Everything you own, is energy.
I equate it to the same feeling you get when you clean out a closet, how somehow you yourself feel lighter.
It is because you literally are shifting the physical energy of the space, thru being decluttered, and cleaned out.
While I love my things, and I do definitely have a hard time not hoarding beautiful objects. I do find that it weighs me down mentally when I have too much surrounding me. Especially if it's not important things or things that bring me happiness to look at.
Defend your calendar " that's super important.
It's taking me too many years to figure that one out and I'm 54. Don't wait until you're 54 to defend your calendar my friends! Know what your time is worth.

I just subscribed! It took a 2nd major hurricane for me to finally be in the process of letting go. After spending 11 days priming and painting, still not done yet, but we started bringing some of the furniture back inside our house that is in a storage POD in our driveway and I afterwards I felt sad. I realized that I’m grieving. I’ve been asking God to help me let go & declutter my home, be careful what you ask for, lol. My mother-in-law is that person! In one week I think it was 8 times that I took it to her doctor appointments, she’s been doing this for years and they’ve never found anything wrong with her. I told my husband I cannot spend my life bringing her to the doctor, heck I’m about to be 59 years old! Thanks to your video, I know what I’m in for!! We Shall Conquer!! 🙌

When I was done decluttering (well partially!) I was able to see sooo much more of the floor and it’s truly motivating me. Although this is about living with less, which I am all for, I feel like another stage could be repurposing. I feel like for some there will always be items that feel like they're so much apart of us that we may want to keep them around. For example your vase would be repainted and hold a nice little flower arrangement or something. Obviously this probably wouldn't work for you, but just something to keep in mind. I really enjoyed this video!

I feel like the external and internal decluttering is happening together. Since I don't know anyone else going thru the Minimalism process, I had no idea other people were experiencing the same things. It's such a relief to know that, and it inspires me to keep going and stay committed to this lifestyle. Thanks to you, Gabe, especially for reminding me to inject some humour into this whole crazy process. And thanks to everyone here for sharing their experiences, much gratitude 🙏💜

Wanted to share with you that I'm currently on the last stretch of packing up my childhood home with my Mom and moving to a townhouse. While packing today, my mom jabbed that I was far from a minimalist as I kept keeping childhood toys that I'd forgotten about and now brought back a rush of feeling and memory. I have been trying to adopt minimalism/essentialism for a year now and it has been so hard, stuff seems to reappear where I'd gotten rid of it. At the same time, I'm at a point where I'm too aware of the clutter's chaos that I can't go back to ignorant bliss. That's how I ended up on this video, which I'm really really grateful for for it's practical, honest, and realistic. Thanks for the major motivation :-)

I needed this. Terribly so. My home is clean and tidy and everything has its place, but there is simply too much. I’m home every second of everyday, and have been for 5 years. Bed bound from chronic illness and what not.
I cried last night because I am so overwhelmed from all of my things. I just looked around and cried and got upset that I don’t have the physical energy (again, illness) to do anything about it, and got into bed.
Add in the elements of my attachment to many of these items are rooted in trauma and not simply memories, plus I’m trying to sell a lot of them since I do not receive disability, and it adds a whole new element of confusing stress into attempting minimalism.
I’m still confused and torn, but this has helped. And it just happened to be on my timeline; I didn’t even search for it or anything of the like. But again, it was exactly what I needed, and it helped. Quite a bit. Thank you.

I have been on my minimalist journey for 3 years now and I completely missed the magic. I decluttered A LOT. But it didn’t change my life so much. I had time for passion projects before as well. I just use minimalism for aethetics and having less to clean. I am more midful about what to buy and what to keep. But Iaöso decided, that it’s pretty lame to own too little things. You‘ll spend all your time online (during covid at least). I need my craft supplies. A LOT. And the other thing I noticed: Sentimental items will be soooo important when I am old! Keep those pictures and letters, guys! Just let go of the useless stutt that your aunt gave you for your birthday and you didn’t like it but you kept it to not upset her.

This is lovely gabe & so gently conveyed ... I am In the early stages of this journey , however have been wanting to get started with this important clearing of superfluous things in my home especially for a very long time & have now started . I have the benefit of seeing my
Kitchen floor now in the last week after it being an obstacle course for too long . My fully charged ( probable adhd ) 10 yr old son is fully enjoying having the physical SPACE to run & jump & move his body around freely as he needs - he needs a lot of space indoors to move in all directions & this stage 1 of kitchen clearing has given him the physical indoor space he needs .
Stage 2 I deconstructed my double bed & downsized to a single bed , this was a brave step to take , yet again it was to create more space in the adjacent area next to the kitchen . I was questioning my sanity prior to doing it , since my double bed was so perfectly comfortable & yet it took up so much space in this prime area . Astoundingly I actually prefer the single bed , for which I again had thought I may regret , but NO i feel it works & it creates more space in the area that is used the most in my home & consequently makes it a more spacious area & sweeping the floor took so little time due to the kitchen floor being clear of obstructions .
I can only do so much at a time , due to other matters that need my attention , yet I know this is what my family home needs , especially
since there is an entire room upstairs with around 10 years of things that have been awaiting being evicted from the room , so that the room can be used as a room for living vs a store room .
It feels right & it is already benefitting my
Lovely autistic son , which I wouldn’t have seen this if I hadn’t FOCUSED on STARTING the process .
Knowing where to start was part of my dilemma , yet it was VITAL to create space to be able to remove the kitchen items OUT from the kitchen , hence deconstructing my
Double bed & instead constructing the single bed provided that bit of space to free the kitchen , so it can breathe freely ...
This 1st step has proven to create what was needed & I understand to be confident to continue evicting as much other unwelcome items that have overstayed their welcome .
Thankyou for your gentle , humourous & helpful & explanatory vlogs that are logical & make sense to those others of us who may have inadvertently accumulated too many things .
For myself my reason for this is that I have 3 children & am a single parent & need to
Support my children a lot , due to them
All having additional needs in terms of daily living & needing caring support from someone who understands their autistic needs & also my health deteriorated such that this affects what I can achieve each day , so I have to listen to my body & stop when it says it’s had enough , yet progress has started & the benefit is being felt by my young child & that alone is sufficient reason 2 continue the hard but significantly rewarding work : for the benefit of my children & my well-being too . Thankyou again gabe 🥰
