  • Salivary glands are classified as exocrine glands, tubuloacinar glands, and merocrine glands. The secretions of the salivary glands are secreted through a process of fusion of membranous secretory vesicles (granules) with the apical plasma membrane known as exocytosis. Salivary glands are broadly divided into major and minor salivary glands. There are three pairs of major SG: the parotid, the submandibular (formerly submaxillary), and the sublingual glands. The minor salivary glands are located in the submucosa of different parts of the oral cavity. They include the lingual, labial, buccal, and palatine glands. The four major parts of the salivon are: the acinus, intercalated duct, striated duct, and excretory duct. Myoepithelial or basket cells are contractile cells with numerous processes, that embrace the basal aspect of the acinar secretory cells. Serous demilunes are artifacts of the traditional fixation method.

Most of the literature is from 'Oral Development and Histology' by James K Avery and 'Histology A Text and Atlas' by Wojciech Pawlina. Hope that's helpful.
