Hey Ryan, I have an issue with the grass in my front yard. Is there anyway I could send you a picture so you can identity it for me? I can’t seem to find anyone that has an answer. Thanks!
I ordered via your link. For the plug hole you take the existing lawn, do you just fill in that spot with dirt and let the other healthy grass around it fill in naturally? In the video it looks like you take the bad area plug and put it where you got the healthy area plug. Thanks ahead of time.
I have started "pre grow" the seeds in a wheelbarrow in my garage. Fill it up with a soil/sand mix, 3 hand full "slow growing" seeds. Water it so it's moist and then cover with a piece of cloth, so the water don't evaporates. After a few days you can see the seeds starts to grow and it's time to repair. One wheelbarrow is a about 10 m²
Thanks for the information Ryan ! I have been watching your videos for over a year now. Last spring we decided to tackle a complete renovation of our front yard and it turned out perfect with all the information I’ve learned from you. I’m going to start my backyard renovation next week.
Love the ProPlugger, have had it for about three years and it works great for plugging. I usually pull a plug and drop it in a bucket, then place the ProPlugger back in that hole and pour a cup of rich soil/sand combo back down the tube to fill the hole where I just pulled the plug. It is also great for planting bulbs. Thanks Ryan for sharing.
The Pro plugger is one of my favorite lawn tools. Having cool season KBG it works tremendously to plug in bare spots. Don't forget to water the plugs as you would for laying sod. I ussually throw some peat moss on theplugs to hold in moisture and it recovers super quick. My ultimate favorite use for it is for pulling dandeloins and broad leave weeds, so fun to use.
String trimmer works great clear the old dead stuff. Gets you down to dirt in seconds. The thatch rake works great once you clear the area to loosen the seeding bed. I actually usually use the garden weasel to do that part.
this video is perfect for nearly 75% homeowners..dogs, cat, deer always sniff out a great lawn..i have been fixing couple spots this year already..but i need to make a trip to hardware store and get that rake..i was using a small handheld garden tool..thanks for the video and keep producing great info..
I follow you for some time now. At the moment I am in proces od building a house. And thanks to ypur videos ill be able to grow a healthy lawn. Thanks man.
Just recently started following you. You have truly covered all the bases I needed covered. But now I find myself a bit passionate about this lawn care stuff and want to dive deeper. Counting on your guidance both directly and indirectly. Thank you for everything. I will be purchasing your guide. I’m in southern Oregon and need your help.
i seeded my spots with some tall fescue almost 3 weeks ago. they’re starting to fill in already! got milorganite today and some weed killer. quarantine won’t keep me from having the best lawn on the block! now i just need a good method of eliminating moles...
Watching your older videos too and wow: what a difference even 2 years makes for your lawn. You’ve really grown (no pun intended) in the past years and your tips have helped me to do that same. Thanks!
Fixing dog spots is a regular thing around here. Only thing I would not do is to use the rake to 'work in' the seed. I find that it actually just pushes it away and off of target so once I get the seed onto the ground I just go right in and add 1/4" starter fertilized topsoil and that's it.
I had a large area of dead grass to rake and the easiest way I found out was to use the string trimmer. Took me 10 minutes rather than rake it and throw my back.
Get a square plugger like the yard butler plugger. You get a a lot more coverage vs round(unless of course you warm season guys buy round plugs). Square pluggers for KBG get tons more fill-in area than round. works much better.
First time watching your channel and the first thing I noticed is your Vikings hat. Skol! The dogs here in Fargo are making a lot of spots and I want to remedy. Thanks for the tips.
I know it's not the right way, but I've done for dog spots is throw down some seed (my yard is fescue) then I throw down a couple hand fulls of pellatized gypsum over it. I don't pull out the old grass, the gypsum takes care of it in a few days, and it neutralizes the soil. It has worked for me but I'm not a perfectionist and I have several dogs, so my backyard is a lost cause anyway!
Serious questions. I’m new here so maybe you’ve already said this a billion times. How big is your yard and how many hours a week do you spend on your lawn/yard?
Thanks for the video. I've recently laid tall fescue sod and have kept my dogs away from it so far but they'll get into it eventually. hoping not to have to do this but at least there's a plan to use if they do. so far so good.
Great video Ryan and thank you I'm always dealing with dead spots in my lawn because of my dogs. I'm going to try to section them to one part of my yard. What does video definitely help with repairing the lawn
Great video Ryan, good info. I have found low sodium dog food has helped eliminate my dog urine spots. I also noticed in my new test area of KBG, it doesn’t fair well. This could be because of the smaller area of KBG too. It’s only a 200sqft are versus the 1000 sqft of TTTF, my older dog uses the KBG more often. Keep up the good work.
Ryan, I know you always say “know your grass type “ when it comes to patching or overseeding. But how does one go about figuring out what type of grass I have. I’m up in Minnesota, and from what I’ve learned from you, it could one or a mixture of possibly 3 kinds of grass
Plugger is great but my dog now pulls them up and plays with them. A little training is bringing it under control but she loves tossing the plug around like a dead mouse.
New to the lawn science. I killed off all of the zoysia in my front yard summer of 19. Tilled the yard up, Raked and removed all the dead crap, added about 7 yds of dirt to make more level, and seeded the crap outta it by Sept,19. Grass came up amazing, neighbors all say it looks like rand new sod. Roughly a month ago I noticed I do have crabgrass growing, I treated the lawn, killed the crabgrass and weeds coming up, did a great job. But I have several yellow spots where it’s dead, this was also after I spread Scott’s weed & feed before I watched this video and realized new seed won’t grow. I still have a few low spots to fix, and was going to try ur overseeding method, but doesn’t look like I can now. Am I just screwed until September?
Also I’m in Missouri, right on the line of the cool grass and buffer zone about 30 mins SW of St. Louis. When I seeded in Sept, I mixed a blend of bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass and spread it pretty evenly, but thick. Came up great, and looked like carpet.
Janus Squared I use Prodiamine in the spring (pre-emergent) which will prevent that weed from ever germinating. Then I spray a 3 - way broadleaf herbicide called Trimec Classic on my second application around May 1st here in SW Michigan. This application will kill any broadleaf weeds including Plantains.
Hi Ryan love your videos, thanks for guiding people like me. Have a quick question. In stay in northern Kentucky, which is the best grass that spreads for our region?
I had some big dead spots last season because of my dog urine but my Bermuda filled in all the spots in one season. I love Bermuda grass because it spread like a MF and repair itself
Great stuff. Thanks for the knowledge. Your channel sure does help with a lot of my lawn care. I do have one question and may be random but what work shoes do you wear?
Recently purchased your lawn guide and enjoyed the first read through. Looking forward to referring to it throughout the season! Question for you: I purchased a new blade for my push mower today and I’m unsure if I should sharpen it before use? My previous blade was tearing the blades and in my trial with the new blade it was too tough to tell if there was a difference.
Jordan McGregor i just picked one up today too. i sharpened mine as it was covered in paint and not sharp at all. i say sharpen it till it cuts paper...
Hey Ryan, I just want to say thank you for doing what you do and giving us Iowans(40 miles north of you)someone we can relate to, we do appreciate it, although I don't really understand the low mow and stripped look, to each his own and you do yours very well. Anyway, I have a question that I have asked others in the past and haven't gotten a satisfactory answer on it yet. Since your somewhat on the subject I'll give you a shot at it. Will a traditional pre emergent(prodiamine) prevent a rhizome from sprouting through its barrier ?
Love your channel. I have 2 dogs each about 100lbs. I have a lot of urine damage over about 400-500 sq feet. Do I have to worry about neutralizing the excess nitrogen with gypsum or something before replanting the area?
Move into new home in Minnesota at end of month. Would the best lawn for dogs be a 100% kbg kept at .5-.75"? Easier to clean up the landmines. Or keep grass tall for natural fertilizer?
Hey Ryan, if you can get companies to send you some broadcast spreaders I think it would be awesome for you to do reviews on them and pick the top ones that you recommend for performance/price. I'm tired of my scotts mini edgeguard spreader (mainly because I'm tall and it's way too short plus it's on the cheaper side).. I've been looking at the scotts elite but it seems like every spreader is so mixed with reviews (even with the expensive commercial ones). I'm stuck between the scotts elite and earthway 2600a
My lawn was sodded last year, in Minnesota, not sure what kind of grass it is but I am wondering if I can take sod from the same place and ‘plug’ it in the bare spots from dog urine?
I use a high end Kentucky blue grass for over seeding in Colorado, but use Scott’s East seed for my patches when needed. What are your thoughts on this product?
Bare spots...oh yes, I have lots of them. This is not due to winter or soil problems...no... this is due to earthworms, I’m talking about a total invasion of earthworms! A few years ago I had a golf course type lawn, then the worms came... their castings average 3 inches in height all over my lawn. The nitrogen in these castings are very high which kills the grass surrounding the castings. I don’t mind a few worms, in fact, they are good for the lawn. But I am overrun with these critters. Any idea how to reduce the population, any advice would be much appreciated, thank you.
You should move the edging fencing back about 24" so that the dogs will pee on the mulch. If they are boys, set up some stump like vertical posts, they will much prefer to pee on that than on the lawn.
Some of those dead spots are natural gas leaks underground i know cause my job is to find those leaks and one thing I'm looking for is for dead grass..
We did this but to an extreme level. Half of our back yard didn’t come back this year after a whole Canadian winter of having over 300 lbs worth of dogs peeing in the yard. It’s been a disaster in the back yard but hey what do you do 🤷
Thanks for sharing you yard knowledge much appreciated!!! I have a question, I have a yard that is all dirt and recently bought some sod to fill a section of my yard and will take plugs from that portion to fill in the rest of my yard. I am growing El toro zoysia. so my question is I"m going to also be using the pro plugger tool, what would you recommend I use to back fill the plug holes with? do I just take the dirt plugs and place them in the plug holes or would you recommend top soil, or sand or a mixture of sand and dirt? Thanks again for the great vids.
Thanks for watching! If you're interested in the tool I used to move plugs or grass seed I'm using, links are in the description. :)
Are you able to make a short section addressing grass types outside of America? I'm sure It would be greatly useful for us Europeans across the water!
Hey Ryan, I have an issue with the grass in my front yard. Is there anyway I could send you a picture so you can identity it for me? I can’t seem to find anyone that has an answer. Thanks!

Hi, do you ship grass seeds to Canada? I’m looking to buy your Kentucky blue grass mix. Thanks!
FYI ProPlugger also works great for pulling bulb-type weeds e.g. wild garlic, wild onion, etc
You need to do a part 2 (and maybe 3) showing the repaired spots after time has passed.
Plugging grass is fun and it's satisfying to watch it spread and fill in.
A tip for those who have Tall Fescue. During the fall or winter seed some tall fescue in trays to use as plugs during the spring and summer.
Thanks for the information Ryan ! I have been watching your videos for over a year now. Last spring we decided to tackle a complete renovation of our front yard and it turned out perfect with all the information I’ve learned from you. I’m going to start my backyard renovation next week.
Dealing with this issue. Two big dogs! Thanks for the tips
I just used a bulb planter last week to move some plugs around in my backyard. Good stuff.
Love the ProPlugger, have had it for about three years and it works great for plugging. I usually pull a plug and drop it in a bucket, then place the ProPlugger back in that hole and pour a cup of rich soil/sand combo back down the tube to fill the hole where I just pulled the plug. Thanks Ryan for sharing.
Can't believe I just found your channel and this is the video I needed. 🙏🙏🙏

I ussually throw some peat moss on theplugs to hold in moisture and it recovers super quick. My ultimate favorite use for it is for pulling dandeloins and broad leave weeds, so fun to use.
James Hardy Do you remove the weed plug and replace it with a good plug from another part of your lawn? Thanks in advance.
String trimmer works great clear the old dead stuff. Gets you down to dirt in seconds. The thatch rake works great once you clear the area to loosen the seeding bed. I actually usually use the garden weasel to do that part.
+1 on the string trimmer. Just did this last week for a lawn reno
The garden weasel is by far the best tool for the job.
Awesome. Used ur method last year to fix my grass. And looking forward to ur new methods!
this video is perfect for nearly 75% homeowners..dogs, cat, deer always sniff out a great lawn..i have been fixing couple spots this year already..but i need to make a trip to hardware store and get that rake..i was using a small handheld garden tool..thanks for the video and keep producing great info..
Thanks for all the content, really good distraction from what’s going on. And help my yard look great. Keep up the great work
I follow you for some time now. At the moment I am in proces od building a house. And thanks to ypur videos ill be able to grow a healthy lawn.
Thanks man.
Two of my favorite manual tools - that dethatch rake and the ProPlugger
When doing small seeding spots. Pete from GCI Tuff Introduced me to the Garden Weasel Cultivator. Best tool for the job.
I love my ProPlugger. I use it for repairing spots all the time. I used it for my soil test too.
Your videos are very well done and looks a step above this season! Skol!!
Just recently started following you. You have truly covered all the bases I needed covered. But now I find myself a bit passionate about this lawn care stuff and want to dive deeper. That pro plugger makes a nice size plug for this purpose. Better than a tiny soil probe plug. Good info
First time watching your channel and the first thing I noticed is your Vikings hat. Skol! The dogs here in Fargo are making a lot of spots and I want to remedy. Thanks for the tips.
This is straight up one of your most helpful videos - wish I’d seen this one before planting my lawn!
That is so funny, I had the same thing done to my head last spring and it really works. #Hairtransplant #Grasstransplant
Hey Ryan l use a garden weasel to remove the Dead grass it also helps work up the soil

Great video! Thank you for talking about both cool season and warm season grass👍
That plugger is pretty sweet
Really like my ProPlugger. Transplanted some Alaska Nugget from my dads yard.
Great video Ryan and thank you I'm always dealing with dead spots in my lawn because of my dogs. I'm going to try to section them to one part of my yard. What does video definitely help with repairing the lawn
Simple, yet effective.
I didnt even think about plugs! Great idea

Very timely video Ryan! Thanks for sharing!
Nicely stated.
Had no idea about the plugs!
*I made this suggestion about plugging to Lawn Tips, then shortly after he made a video about it.*
this guy is the lawn whisperer!!! Great vid
I love that doggie....❤️❤️❤️❤️
Good information thanks for sharing.
If you don't have the special rake, use an upside-down leaf rake to push in the seed.
Ryan, I find the Groundskeeper 2 rake works great as well!. Lawns looking awesome thanks to you and some sissy grass!
Great videos..
Excellent stuff
Plugger is great but my dog now pulls them up and plays with them. A little training is bringing it under control but she loves tossing the plug around like a dead mouse.

a kbg plug will fill in about an 8" circle over the course of a season.
Love the tips Ryan.....
Great video! I bought the rake using your link, I hope Amazon gives you a credit.
4:35, Returns to the scene of the crime.

You can get ryegrass that has stolens and spreads. Check out Barenburg Rpr!
The color is not quite the deep green I like
I have issues with Broadleaf Plantain. I have used Bayer, Spectracide, Roundup, Tenacity and more. They keep coming back. Suggestions?

Diggin the new intro. Nice. Short and sweet.
An early congratulations, almost at 100k subs man. Thanks for all the great content
Thanks!
Nice presentation 👍. Good luck with your channel.

Hi Ryan love your videos, thanks for guiding people like me. Have a quick question. In stay in northern Kentucky, which is the best grass that spreads for our region?

Will a traditional pre emergent(prodiamine) prevent a rhizome from sprouting through its barrier ?
It may slow it a bit but not completely by any means
When is the best time to apply Grub control in the Northern area?? Is it temperature sensitive ?
Love your channel. I have 2 dogs each about 100lbs. I have a lot of urine damage over about 400-500 sq feet. Do I have to worry about neutralizing the excess nitrogen with gypsum or something before replanting the area?

Bermuda actually spreads by stolons (on top of the ground) & rhizomes(below the surface)
Awesome! Just subscribed.
I broke up the soil but i think the proD isnt letting kt grow! Try again in the fall i guess lol

May be a dumb question, but I have zoysia would I just go buy the zoysia seed… I’m guessing it might be expensive?
Some of those dead spots are natural gas leaks underground i know cause my job is to find those leaks and one thing I'm looking for is for dead grass..
There's no natural gas anywhere near there
@@ryanknorrlawncare just saying sometimes there is.. maybe not there but just sometimes there is everyday when I find them..lol

Ist Alabamian. Good information.
Would a spreading grass not self repair on its own without being plugged?
