    Singapore's Service 167 has remained largely unchanged since its establishment in 1971, connecting Bukit Merah and Sembawang. Together with Service 980, it covers the entire length of Upper Thomson Road and provides a link to the city. Notably, it closely follows the path of the Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 3, which commenced operations in November 2022. Consequently, the demand for this route remains moderate to low throughout the day.
    The historical significance of Service 167 lies in its status as one of the first two bus routes transferred to Trans-Island Bus Service when the company commenced operations. Transferred from SBS on April 3, 1983, both Services 160 and 167 marked the initiation of the new operator's services in the northern part of Singapore. The operational baton passed from Trans-Island to its successor, SMRT Buses, until October 2021, when Tower Transit took over operations under the Sembawang-Yishun Bus Package.
    On November 17, 2023, the Land Transport Authority announced the impending withdrawal of Service 167, effective December 10, 2023. However, in response to public outcry, the LTA reversed its decision on November 28. The route will be retained, albeit with adjustments, operating at 30-minute intervals throughout the day instead of the previous 15-minute frequency, starting from December 17.

    I would suggest amending 167 to Yio Chu Kang Road, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, Central Expressway, Moulmein Road, Paterson Road, Irwell Bank Road, Kim Seng Road, Outram Road, Tiong Bahru Road and Lower Delta Road. Affected commuters who take 167 to Orchard and Shenton Way can take 7, 14, 16, 16M, 36, 65, 77, 106, 111, 123, 124, 143, 174, 190, 502, 518, 972 and 972M

    If I were a bus planner I would operate the service at normal frequency 0530-1500h from Sembawang and 1500-2330h from Bukit Merah. This ensures demand is targetted where needed instead of a 30-minute blanket rule which doesnt achieve greatest efficiency.
    To reduce LTA's variable costs this concept can be applied to other services with generally lower and timing-specific demand (eg 156, 853, 855)

    As a person who does not ride 167 before but observed its demand, i gotta say at around 9-11am, I can observe the 167 towards bukit merah is filled to the front near scotts square. So maybe doing morning peak there maybe more demand.

    I do want to also point out that 167 is now the last bus to ply between Orchard and Fullerton Square (700 has been withdrawn in 2020, 162 was shortened to Sin Ming, etc etc etc), which can be attractive for tourists and weekend-goers.
    Of course there's the NSL but I doubt anybody would want to take a chaotic train line for a short distance.

    Really good video!
    I recorded 167 D1 Hyperlapse the day before they announced the new decision, it was about peak hour (between 525pm-720pm) and there was actually demand from the Thomson stretch filling the majority of the seats and some people standing.
    There's bus service 975A that's seriously useless (DD Buses with an average of 5 pax), why can't they withdraw it??? (Looking into this project)
    But they can withdraw/cut important bus services that still have use...

    From my personal experience, 167 gets relatively crowded during peak periods and remains as a necessary bus services for many. Personally, I take it regularly back from school and everytime I take it, it is quite full. Moreover, it is an important service that links the sembawang estate to MRT stations of the TEL like springleaf. Everytime I take TEL, i get off at springleaf to see a massive crowd to take 980/167 towards sembawang.Merely increasing 980s freq will not fill up the gaps

      ​@glitchFan2428 Taking trains is good, but during breakdowns, how? Some bus services that usually runs parallel to the stretch of stations 'still' need to be in service (not only bridging services) during this period to help them get home quicker

      @@SGrailadventure2004 like an alternative during breakdown, I believe if tel service have some changes, like tel will open later and end earlier on sats and suns, buses like 167 that run parallel shd increase frequency to help manage with the peak hours in the early morning and relieve the stress of the other bus services

      @SGrailadventure2004, i experienced a good example during the recent novena MRT incident, everyone taking NSL towards the north had to take busses, and 167 was a necessary service to bring ppl towards the north and towards the macritchie area

    Personally never taken 167 but purely from looking at the route, I think the main pain point is the Novena to Bukit Merah section, where it splits away from 980 and covers areas not accessible by TEL.
    Given the current situation (modified route of 859 and increased frequency of 980), what I would suggest is to cut 167's route to just the Novena - Bukit Merah section. This could mean keeping 167 to its 15-minute frequency (or even more frequent), with the only inconvenience being a single transfer to 980 for the trunk route up to Sembawang.

    As far as I have observed, 980 still operates at a frequency of 15 minutes on Sundays. (Doesn’t feel that the frequency has increased as what LTA claimed)

    An amendment will be better considering there's one part of sembawang not well connected, and amending the service could relieve load on existing services

    Maybe they should make 167 last bus be around 10pm or make a short trip service that will operate after 10pm. There should also be an increased frquency of bus 167 during peak hours.

    Great video! here are my personal thoughts to LTA...
    Honestly they shouldn’t withdraw 167. They already withdraw 162M and amended 162 to a scam service and the amendment is just to waste our bus card money. I mean yes they want alternatives, but they should know that walking and waiting is time consuming. Plus, Bukit Merah Int is quite a long walk from the actual station (Redhill) being about 800 meters. They should just amend it to also just serve at least Novena then loop back. I can’t imagine the pain that I will have to go through on 26 December cuz I’m also going to the zoo and I also have to film 167’s last day... I hope they will rethink all of this decisions and maybe not amend 167! (why am I saying this, they already made up their mind😂) Anyways, I might be there to film the end, who knows, but boy I sure do know there is going to be more than enough amendments when TEL4 happens. Who knows 😂 Maybe 36 will be withdrawn? We don’t know yet... But anyway, RIP Svc 167, you will be missed. A lot.
    Edit: To Novena as in from Sembawang. Yes.

    Hello glitchfan2428,
    When I rode bus 167 to Sembawang before TTS take over and I noticed that bus 167 not crowded but why LTA want for 167 discontinued?! Many passengers need go to home in Sembawang from CBD with bus 167 because that bus 656 have limited service for only AM and PM PEAK

    I thought of 1 more alternative way. Maybe can let 167 go via yishun ave 3, yishun ring road and khatib mrt bef rejoining the sembawang road via yishun ave 1. Increases catchment and not duplicate 980 too much. Maybe at bt merah side can from jln bt merah turn to CTE then exit at tiong bahru road and continue to jalan mebina then back to jln bt merah to bt merah int. Opens up new connection even tho might be lenthy

    Personally I feel that 167 should not be withdrawn. LTA is literally out of touch with the passengers and commuters and it has shows countless of times with amendments of the past. As stated in the video, alot of elderly commuters relies and prefers 167 compared to the mrt considering its more difficult getting to the train platform unlike taking the buses. In a way i do kinda agree not all bus routes can be preserved for commuters, 167 definitely isnt the route that should be redrawn. As seen in the video, theres still quite a number of commuters taking 167 especially in the city area. Also from what we saw from the amendments of previous routes such as 22, 66 and 506, LTA clearly do not know what they are doing. From comments, 22 demand has drop sigificantly that it has almost become a full fleet single decks at this point. If the demand stays super low, i bet LTA will redraw it and it would be lta fault for ruining the route. Similar to 506, its would have been better if it retain its own route, just introduce a new express/trunk service route to serangoon instead. In my opinion, 167 should retain with a interval of 15-20 mins with maybe just a full fleet of single decks. I mean what happens if tel breaks down? There would be a insufficent lack of alternate routes for passengers thus forcing them to take taxis. Also another qn, if 167 redrawns, will 980 be able to keep up with the demand? The tel is new but already have quite a number of incidents in the past few yrs already and that isnt good. LTA receiving backlash from netizens and commuters? Rightfully so, this truly shows how out of touch lta is with the public and also shows they just took suggestions and feedbacks from some people and thats all(likely those that drives)
    Prepare for more amendments when TEL4 opens😮‍💨 as well as backlash as most of lta decision and amendments are trash.

      853 cut to Bidadari and replaced by 13 to Geylang Lorong 1, 853M withdrawn.
      13 cut to Geylang Lorong 1, replaced by 135 to Upper East Coast.
      135 rerouted to Upper East Coast, replaced by 24 to Kembangan.
      24 cut to Kembangan, replaced by 22 to Airport.
      22 extended to Airport from Eunos.
      134 extended from Sims Place to Bidadari, replacing part of 135.

    Wonder if LTA planning of withdrawn bus svc should be discuss with the public before finalising the plan to withdraw bus svcs as some area may not have direct journey to thier destination

      Most elderly go to the local market or shopping center. They are better served by frequent local feeder services than by long distance trunk services.

      ​@@alvinlaw2006 Bus services to the East Coast are extremely slow so most commuters will quickly switch over to TEL4. Many buses will become quite empty in future so a reduction is inevitable
