For about a grand more you can get a Cartier Solo XL automatic, from Cartier direct, went on their chat cs thing, and asked about any discount codes, the guy threw in a blue strap with the sale. They're from NJ, or was shipped from NJ (the US division) and I lived in NJ and got it like the next day. I know people will say you should have saved and got a JLC reverso pre owned, and they may be right. But I happen to like my Solo, it was new, full warranty and sold by them direct. I looked at the grey market dealers they weren't much cheaper and had like a 2-3 week ship time. So with sales tax may have paid $400 more, but a branded Cartier strap while not crazy expensive is $150.00. (if I remember)

Btw Jory, it seems like your Cartier Tank case was discolored. But you don't want to polish it or rub it with polishing cloth due to the risk of taking the solid gold coated material off then would expose the silver case? You could use a exam grade eraser like Stabilo 1191 N36E or else as long as the eraser is exam grade. Rub it to the whole case, just like how you erase pencil mark from a paper. It won't polish the gold to look shiny as it is just an eraser, but it would remove the discolouration only without taking the material off.
I've done this so many times in my workshop

I have an idea. I like the idea of making the case and strap out of recycled ocean plastic. Unfortunately, they fumbled the ball by putting a non-serviceable movement in it, which means that when it breaks, it goes straight back into the ocean. My proposed solution is to fit this case and strap with a Seiko 7C46 fully serviceable quartz movement, a shitload of lume, a screw-down case back, and 200 meters of water resistance. Sell that for the same price and I think you’ve got a winner.

Look at the (photoshopped) alignment of the hour hand of the ''plastic ocean''; when the minute hand is at 10, the hour hand should be very close to 51 instead of 50 spot on. But that would probably look too weird because of the offset of the circle, I think.

I suspect using ocean plastic means that they need to find a manufacturer who has a way to process it. I am not defending this watch but if they are doing this than it probably means that they have additional costs associated with manufacturing. Unfortunately it is usually cheaper to use raw materials than recycled ones. This is a big issue and its good to see this issue being raised by designers and manufacturers of lifestyle and luxury pieces. Personally, I would rather this initiative was taken by a company with an actual track record in corporate responsibility.

Unreal how some people just give money away thoughtlessly. Why not buy an inexpensive watch and make a charitable donation with the rest of the money, if you dont care if the watch has actual value?

That's the truth for most designer brands. Tom Ford brand does great with suits and fragrances. Avoid the remaining products.
BTW, if you are going to buy a brand new Tom Ford suit, you will be better off going to a bespoke reputable taylor.

4:45 IT’S CALLED RECYCLING IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD IT ALREADY. Despite your view on the plastic watch, which has unique selling point. You are correct in the part which they just sell knock off tank, quartz, for 2200, it is awful. If they really want their brand to enter the haute horlogerie market. Make a good, nice proper one. If they can’t produce a movement, use a nice JLC or high-end ETA or Zenith. Buy a movement put them in a nicely designed watch. Then they can go for high-end market. They could start with higher prices and people would still accept those. But this, it’s just an awful thing.

Oris, like Seiko are actively putting cash into projects to clean up the ocean, Oris supports the PGS project which is probably one of the most interesting looking machines I've ever seen as well as supporting the Great Barrier Reef project and of course, Seiko puts cash into the Cousteau Society.

  • @markalexander774

Do not give them credit for the environmental aspect. More waste and more energy will used to make and ship each watch than each watch is removing from the ocean.
You have to take the plastic pieces from the ocean, transport them to somewhere that turns them into usable plastic (probably China), transport them again to Switzerland (maybe, maybe somewhere else) to turn that plastic into the case, and then transport it again to a warehouse (probably in the NYC area), and then ship them out to a customer. And that is just shipping, not counting the amount of electricity used to do all of manufacturing and recycling of the plastic, but also the amount of waste going into those processes. This is not better for the environment than any other watch other than that it will likely end up as trash in the ocean unlike an actual, high end watch.

They are obviously not trying to do a good thing. If they were they would sell the watch for an affordable price like maybe $50 at the most. So they could sell more of them because the more they sell the more plastic is recycled and the cleaner the ocean. It's for rich people to virtue signal and flex at the same time.

Maybe it has jumping hours. Look at the hour hand. The circle on the hour hand stays exactly on 10 while the minute hand moves. No idea if it’s a rendering bug or real. If they have a jumping hour, then it would definitely lift it higher.

When was this not a thing? Every designer brand does this. For the people who buy tom ford products 5$ is the equivalent of 1000$ or more anyway. As much as they are exploiting their customers, I have no sympathy for people who buy products like and therefore enable them by being willfully ignorant of what they are buying.

This is exactly what I hate about "Fashion" brands. I think the watches are ugly, uninspired, and Timex Rip offs. Then they have the gaul to charge thousand(s) for a quartz movement... Like I'll spend that on quartz but it's got to be explained to me why it costs so much, see the Breitling Emergency or something along those lines.
I don't even cares about the cause, this level of pricing markup should be illegal.
