I got burned on Victorinox Maverick Small (quartz version). Really hate that watch. Size was fine (yes, I think 34mm is an ok size), movement was fine (aside from the minutes hand flopping about, not actually telling me which minute it should be pointed at (the seconds hand flops about, but that's normal for quartz)). Lume almost doesn't exist, and it had serious glare issues to the point that it was often painful to look at it. Bezel developed problems, and it seems that they haven't made it to be repairable, unlike Seiko's bezels. It's also built to prevent strap changes, which is another thing Seiko excels at.

Hermès is a good example of a company that one would associate with anything BUT horological clout, however they’ve been making watches since 1928 in partnership- at that time at least- with heavy-hitters like Vacheron and Jaeger LeCoultre. Sure, they have some relatively standard issue quartz models, but they’ve also got an impressive catalogue of innovative and prize-winning models of genuine horological interest- The Arceau ‘Le Temps Suspendu’ for example. A beautiful, and totally unique approach to time.

Here's the thing for me, I like fashion brands and designers for clothing, (except for when it comes to watches and most jewellery)
I'd rather have a watch from a watch maker like Hamilton or Seiko as an example than a watch from Armani.
Don't get me wrong, there's exceptions here and there, but I can justify paying a premium for a fine timepiece made in Switzerland from a company who has been creating watches and making history for over a 100 years.
It's the same with jewellery, i'd rather have a real solid gold chain from a jewellery maker than a cool looking gold plated one from Versace.
If a bunch of watch brands made T-shirts, I probably wouldn't buy them either.

To be fair they can only "steal" from you if you pay them and if you buy that watch you clearly know nothing about watches and will not feel like you have been cheated.

Hermes and Chanel watches (some) have fine in house automatic movements that can be quite good....one has to decide about the price and design to determine if they are worth it to them.

You rock sir.....no idea how these companies come up with their pricing. It really is day light robbery. I am sure they will sell loads of them. People need to be educated, they just see the name and assume it must be quality

  • @RichieKhan

As someone who works in the industry, I can assure you our highest clients do not care about the movements and specifications. For them, it is all about aesthetics and the statement it creates on the wrist. Some of our highest valued pieces well close to $50,000 sells without any explanation but rather focusing on purely aesthetics.
I think it's a beautiful thing, a watch is a work of art and if it speaks to someone, then hey who are we to say the price isn't justified ? Just enjoy the hobby and acquire what speaks to you because it is going to be your companion.

The Swiss luxury watch market it’s undoubtedly a hard and competitive one. I am a TF consumer and fan, but not blind. 5k for a TF timepiece is absurd, specially when for less you can get a Jaeger leCoultre/Cartier for the same price, if not less.
You’ll get much more prestige, brand recognition, history and craftsmanship than with a TF.
All my respects to Mr. Ford, but his watches should cost beyond 2-3k$.

Good job Time Teller, paying $9000 for a Tom Ford gold tank quartz fashion watch is ridiculous when you can have a real Cartier gold automatic tank watch for $6000 to $8000. The resale value of those fashion watches are bad. Instead of buying a $2000 Tom Ford stainless steel quartz watch I will rather buy a $2000 automatic Oris Aquis or Seiko Diver watches.

Quartz movements are great for fashionistas, but the fact that they're not telling us which quartz it is is stupid. I would be okay if it had a quartz movement in the same grade as Grand Seiko or ETAs highest end thermocompensated movements.

The price difference between the gold and the stainless implies gold is worth a lot more than what gold is actually worth. All things considered there is no way that watch is worth that. No way in hell.
