  • When many people picture a refugee camp they see a sprawling mass of helpless individuals. But the reality is often the opposite. A growing number of camps are booming enclaves of business, innovation and culture. Challenging the stereotypes around refugees is one mission of #TEDxKakumaCamp, a first of its kind event for TED, the influential conference network that hosts online talks on a range of scientific, cultural and academic topics.
The gathering is being held at the Kakuma refugee camp in northwestern Kenya and the list of speakers includes refugees, aid workers and Somali-American supermodel Halima Aden, who grew up at the camp, among others.
Kakuma was set up in 1992, initially to take in mostly Sudanese refugees. It is now one of the world’s biggest refugee camps, hosting about 185,000 people who’ve fled war or persecution from 19 African countries. A May 2018 report by the the World Bank's International Finance Corporation and the UN refugee agency estimates Kakuma’s informal economy is worth $56 million dollars. It’s also connected, with approximately 70 percent of the people who live there having access to mobile phones.
On this episode of The Stream we discuss how Kakuma is redefining what a refugee camp is.

Thank you Al Jazeera English. It's so important that people see the creativity, resilience and determination of displaced communities. And we are particularly proud of Moulid Hujale who proposed this discussion. When he lived in Dadaab Refugee Camp in Kenya he started a news service while working with FilmAid. He has gone on to become a talented journalist for BBC, The Guardian and others. Thank you for highlighting the talent, tenacity and creativity of the refugee community in Kenya.

TeDx, you are a God's inspired venture. Great minds always think big and you are one of the great ones. Please, lead with your hearts because sometimes a brain may mislead you. Why? Because only you owns your heart but the mind always wanders and that is why it is not trustworthy. You may read and attain knowledge in your brain, but only the heart can maintain all that.

Lol all my comments are deleted from the live chat replay. That is really messed up. Even though I got heated you should've let my comments go.
I didn't respect this panel of celebrities speaking out for all the poor people they left behind.
All I said was that this place is like Detroit, everyone wants to leave when people like me are like, hey that's a good place to vunteer.
Also, I mentioned, this camp was made because of war and terrorism in the region long ago, and now the people are kind of in a tough situation and maybe that's the place to start looking for answers how to solve their problems.
I also asked is the point here to develop the refugee camp which al Jazeera is showing off the developments in a good manner, or is the point to get rid of the refugee camps as al Jazeera claims.
I feel like restating these things is good for Kenya's and the camp. Thanks please don't delete my comment!

file folders file folders I think that defining rational discussion is tough and I feel like they shouldn't delete angry comments but your point is a good one.
About the camps, they're called camps but after reading about them i feel like that word could use redefining as well. Terrible, but the pope last year likened them to concentration camps.
That's like 185000 people that are there because of hostile conditions around them isn't it? And as a westerner I'm like, whoah I don't know if it's better that they all come here. Lemme no wat u think

Jacklye Davies I hope they act better than people in detroit but is it better? This is from wikipedia:
New arrivals normally receive one piece of reinforced plastic 4 by 5 meters with which to construct their shelter. The plastic, while providing an excellent waterproof layer, is not self-supporting, nor does it provide any insulation. They need long supple pieces of wood to make the frame and grass to complete the shelter walls of the hut and provide some thermal insulation. Housing is built of mud brick, wood, or cane extracted from the surrounding territories and new or scavenged canvas. The other half is thatched roof huts, tents, and mud abodes.
Your argument of it being better is unconpelling. Detroit actually reports crime statistics and they are really bad but is the justice system really present in kakuma? Do we know rape and murder statistics?

Jacklye Davies so you're saying in a place where ~73% of people are under 25 and ~47% are under 18 there is no drug use or rampant HIV which is basically not contentment but suicide?
Wake up Americans, we're the ones that are sponsoring the camp and this is in spite of the hatred all over the world towards us. Terrifying. Btw, my sister chose to study radiology in detroit last year, they're the best in the country.
