Ma jolie, how do you do?
    Mon nom est Jean-Guy Thibault-Leroux
I come from east of Gatineau
My name is Jean-Guy, ma jolie
    J'ai une maison a Lafontaine
where we can live, if you marry me
    Une belle maison a Lafontaine
where we will live, you and me
    Oh Louise, ma jolie Louise
    Tous les matins au soleil
I will work 'til work is done
    Tous les matins au soleil
I did work 'til work was done
And one day, the foreman said
"Jean-Guy, we must let you go"
Et pis mon nom, y est pas bon
    at the mill anymore...
Oh Louise, I'm losing my head,
    I'm losing my head
My kids are small, 4 and 3
et la bouteille, she's mon ami
I drink the rum 'tilI I can't see
It hides the shame Louise does not see
    Carousel turns in my head,
and I can't hide, oh no, no, no, no
And the rage turned in my head
and Louise, I struck her down,
    down on the ground
I'm losing my mind, I'm losing my mind
    En Septembre '63
kids are gone, and so is Louise.
    Ontario, they did go
    near la ville de Toronto
Now my tears, they roll down,
    tous les jours
    And I remember the days,
and the promises that we made
Oh Louise, ma jolie Louise, ma jolie Louise.

OK, let's talk about all the little things that add up to make this one of the greatest songs of all time.
    1. The story: the flow of the lyrics; rich to dark. Starting a family and then losing your job at the mill and turning to alcohol. So well written.
    2. The perfect mix of English and French.
    3. Amazing producer. Daniel Lanois produced U2's breakout album Joshua Tree.
    4. Simple production on this track; not very layered. Daniel Lanois got U2's Larry Mullen to play such simple drums on this track and also Adam Clayton on simple bass.
The instrumentation is drums, bass, accordion, keys, and later picked guitar. So simple.
    5. Timing tricks. The verse is 3 measures of 4 beats, and then a 2-beat measure. Nice.
    6. That deep sultry voice. Very well recorded with intimacy and so much expression.

It’s December 1st and I just happen to be in the splendor of Old Quebec City. Fresh snow on the ground, fresh air in my lungs and there’s an abundance of festivities. While it has little to do with this song, it has a lot to do with the celebration of Francophone culture; ce paysage est magnifique.

The carousal and the calliope conscript, conspire and require we who think, also to feel. In here lies the rub. It is what drinks the rum till I can't hide--Louise: I am sorry. Now my tears, they roll down... and I remember the days and the promises....

I love this song, even though it makes me cry. Maybe because it makes me cry. I never tire of Daniel Lanois music, nothing else like it. The song that tears me up the most is "Unbreakable Chain". I first heard it when my baby son had been kidnapped by his deranged father, they were missing for almost a year. I still cry when I listen to it, worst year of my life.
"It was tugging at my heart, that unbreakable chain". I'm grateful it wasn't 30 years.

@@carolsmartass4362 He's 28 now, and we still don't talk about that awful year much. He was too young to remember, and I'm glad. It has affected him for life though, because our bodies remember even when we don't.

@@carolsmartass4362 It's been hard because his father murdered my dad 3 years later, but was never convicted. While he did 4 years in prison on a different felony, I sold my house and moved 1500 miles away with my son and our 2 cats and started over. I even went to court and changed my name to something ridiculously common so we'd be hard to find. It worked, but I never learned to trust any man with my heart again.
I live off-grid on a mountain, closest neighbor is more than a mile away. I go weeks without seeing another human and I've become too accustomed to living this way, out here with my goats and chickens. I've lived here 16 years, living on solar/wind/battery power and elbow grease.
Sometimes I wonder what kind of sad song Mr. Lanois could write about me; the weird ol' "goat lady" with the mystery past? Sometimes gossip spread about me by "neighbors" 3 mi. away on the paved road finds its way back to me and I think its funny. I'm really not that interesting IRL.
Well, looks like my semi-pet raven just came to tap on my window because his food dish is empty, and his mate is sitting on a nest right now so he brings her food. Our morning routine for the last couple of weeks. Happiest, most well-adjusted couple I've ever known!
Can't wait to meet their latest offspring. I've enjoyed their company for 7 years now. Raven families tend to stay together, so I have a whole "murder" out here, but only "Igor", the patriarch, is semi-tame. He leaves interesting items on my doorstep like chess pieces, small tools, and lots of metal washers. I think he's paying me for the food.
They bring me joy... people? Not so much, but I've found peace and happiness.

I woke up with this song stuck in my head. I always thought of 'Jolie Louise' as a sweet love song, till I paid closer attention to the lyrics. Then I learned that it's written from the perspective of a man who was abusive. Although he loses everything at the end due to his excessive drinking and violent behavior, it left a bad taste in my mouth somehow😕
