IKR I just want to hug her. She is so good and kind and loving, she deserves everything she dreamed of, and she gets treated like Typhoid Mary by Hilly and her group, and can't even have the baby she wants so desperately. So unfair, but at least she has a husband who truly loves her, and a good friend in Minny.
Johnny would have been devastated if Celia left him. He obviously was madly in love with her. He didn’t care about that fake stuff all the others were doing
In the book there's a bit more detail about Johnny and Celia. He worships the ground she walks on. He finds out about Minny alot earlier than in the film. He comes home early one day and meets Minny who who panics but he's kind to her and asks her to not say a word to Celia that he knows about Minny working for them and just carry on as normal. At the benefit someone makes a remark about how hot Celia is and Johnny gives him a warning not to disrespect his wife. The guy then compares Hilly and Celia and Johnny replies that it was like moving from the Antarctic to Hawaii. It's also hinted that Johnny knows exactly what Hilly is like because when she goes to talk to him she's all sweetness and light but she makes a cutting remark about Celia to his face he answers icy poite and cuts the conversation off pretty quick. I really recommend reading the book it's a brilliant read.
Fun fact Celia (Jessica Chastain) actually argued for equal pay for Minnie (Octavia Spencer) when she found out black women were getting paid less than not only white men but white women. When I found that out it just made this scene and this friendship (on and off camera) more special to me.
Kris J Wow! When Octavia Spencer won The Oscar, I noticed her mouth saying "I love you", when Octavia embraced her just before walking onto the stage to accept her Oscar. It was so genuine. I thought her spirit was so loving. She was also nominated in the same category and her reaction when Octavia won was in support. She wanted her to win. I never knew this. Beautiful.
"If you leave Mr. Johnny, then Miss Hilly won the whole ball game. And she done beat you, and she done beat me" Those are such powerful words. It makes a point that if you give in, you're giving your bullies exactly what they want: for you to give up.
In the book there's more detail about Celia and Johnny. Johnny actually adores Celia. @@robyndismon394 What I meant was, don't let bullies beat you down from enjoying your personal happiness. Celia thinks if only Hilly would like her, she'll have friends and be accepted by everybody. Yeah, but Hilly had a lot of status and Power and I'm sure that the Ladies were scared of her. Remember in The Neighborhood, there was a Kid whom everyone hated but was scared of and if he/she turned on you, it was horrible. Believe Me, I've been there.
Hilly is the proverbial "big fish in a small pond". Every town has at least one. They have to stay in their little pond to rule though. If they were suddenly dropped into a bigger pond, they'd lose their control and status. Hilly is really a pathetic creature in so many ways.
whutzat I was thinking the same thing to be honest. She does have power in Jackson, but what if she were to go someplace bigger? How easy would it be for her to remain in control then? Not very much I'd imagine. Hilly is a really dislikable character.
They're all just afraid of Hilly because she wields so much power there in Jackson and because of her relentless, vicious pursuit of those she dislikes. Hilly is a classic narcissist: capable of pretending like she has loyalty, admiration, and love for her friends, but she uses it to guilt-trip them. And she only befriends and helps those who can help her get ahead with her agenda - which is sadly to be the "Queen Bee" among her troop of women. She's the kind who is at the perpetual stage of a twelve year-old. Pathetic, really.
I absolutely love the scene Johnny has with Minnie. "I dont know what y'all been upto, but the moment you started working here, she started getting better!" Johnny really is a genuine, sweet guy who has married a genuine sweet girl. Even after Celia told him about the graves of 4, having her was all that mattered to him. So glad he and Hilly split up. He was to good for her.
It's also so pathetic for Hildy. She'll be scheming her whole life to attain some ideal while the world and probably her family moves ahead. Meanwhile this couple build a good sweet family because they strive for love and happiness, not being a elitist trophy.

The fact that they both are such good friends in real life makes their on screen friendship so much lovable. Jessica and Octavia made another movie that hasn't come out yet and Jessica said she wouldn't do the movie unless Octavia was paid as much money as her. That is loyalty.
Naaah Celia was way too sweet for Minny to even think of such a thing......they both came from a lower background. Different color of skin but same circumstances when it came to being an outcast of society.
Minnie was right. If Celia left, she not only would’ve broken Johnny’s heart tremendously but given Hilly more power to bully and intimidate others. People like Celia are stronger than that realize.
Johnny and Celia's relationship was actually love as opposed to others in the town that married for power or privilege. Hilly might have been able to control other people and relationships like Elizabeth who follows everything Hilly does regardless if they can't afford it. Skeeter and Johnny were the only two she couldn't control.
@@rubyanne4909 I noticed that. Compare to how Hilly and her husband were cold and distant, Johnny was proud to have Celia on his arm at the Christmas party, and how he’s so sweet and affectionate with her. Hilly’s jealousy was eating at her and it truly showed.
I really wanted Minnie to ask Skeeter as a favour to hang out with Celia once. The two of them would have gotten along because Celia was just a nice, sweet, sincere person and that's what Skeeter was looking for.
Actually, in the book there was a small scene before the ball where Minny tried to encourage CELIA to reach out to Skeeter because she recognized that they were both decent people. However, Celia brushed her off because she was so desperate to fit in and mistakenly thought Hilly was her only avenue to acceptance. Like I said, it was a small scene but it stuck out for me because I could relate to it.
Even though their were alone in the house, she shut the door just to show how important and private that conversation was. It's the little things in movies i love.
This is what makes me sad about Celia’s character. She never wanted the uptown life that Hilly and the other women had. She just wanted to be with the man she loved. Hilly and her group know that and that’s why they exclude Celia. They know it would hurt Celia and make her feel unwelcome.
What's the point of including her if they don't share the similar way of life? If she didn't want an uptown life, then why does she want to be pary of an uptown group?
Celia was the kindest most gentle soul in the whole movie... When they hurt her it was out of nothing more then spite and hatred.. Loved the movie but Celia was like one of my sisters.. I love the friendship that develops between these two women, both outcasts in their own way yet wonderful people, and how they both help each other. This was the highlight of this movie. To be fair I could watch a whole movie about just the two of them and honestly wish I had. I don’t care about any other character in this movie as much as I care about Minnie and Celia’s story.
Just the way she looked at Minnie towards the end was priceless. What's even more priceless is the fact that Celia would still eat Minnie's cooking after finding out about the Terrible Awful!
I truly loved this spectacular movie. It shows what cruelty can do, but also it shows what courage and willingness to deal with it, can do! We are the Human Race and there is no room for disassociation. 🤔 When the novel came out and exposed the cruelty, it made everyone aware of it and who was who. That was such an effective blow to those who thought they were in power! The truth always blows the lies. 😌
Johann Griggs I think it's because Celia has white privilege (and money privilege after marrying Johnny) but instead of being like those other white women, she stayed a nice person.
Johann Griggs oh they do. But Minnie does something about it because she knows. Celia is so innocently naive that she can't see why. It's like watching a child be mistreated by their friends, really.
I think people don't like the way minnie and the maids were treated too. But i think people feel bad for miss celia is she just is SO innocent almost like a child. She just wants friends and to know she has meaning to her life.
Johann Griggs Just because people can recognize the misery one person is in doesn't mean that they're discrediting the struggles of others in any way. Obviously the maids have it much worse than someone who's being bullied. But it's not a competition. Skeeter is a sympathetic character too; everyone but Hilly and her minions are deserving of empathy in some way.
Yup and everyone is like it’s because she’s so sweet and naive. Oh yeah well try being fully aware and conscious of your subservient position every single day of your life and still getting your ass up and making it through with nobody saying aww poor baby and coddling you. That’s a whole hell of a lot harder, but that’s our experience.
This was so funny. Celia had no words, the look on her face says it all. Lol I wonder if she was just a little scared of Minnie after? I loved their relationship, though. Seemed like they were friends by the end of the movie.
Thing is Johnny and Cecilia obviously had more money than all those stuckup bit chez put together .And more heart and more character. You just know they and Minnie lived happily ever after👍❤

To me her face look like she wanted to break out laughing when Minnie told that story lol oh but I bet she was really laughing when she sent that check to "Two Slice Hilly" 😂
Lol as a side note I always love Celia’s reaction of flabbergast when she says “thank you for sharing that with me” and then that side glance 😂😂😂 it’s almost like I better not mess with her or she’s gonna feed be cow dung or something 😂😂😂😂😂
I’d hang out with Celia every damn day. She is such a good person.
This whole movie and I wanna say big respect to all actors and the more to the actresses on this movie the good caractères and the bad one all of them played them roles just amazing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 big respect to them all ♥️
One of the best scenes in cinematic history. Jessica was fabulous in this, as was Miss Octavia! Still one of my favorite movies of all time.
My heart goes out to Celia and I am glad Minnie came into her life at the right time and vice versa.
Right
And because of this scene she writes a check to "two-slice Hilly" so funny!
I swear that last look by Celia is like her thinking…” I’m NEVER making you mad, you’ll crap in my pie!! “. Lolol
It’s another perfect scene
This was the highlight of this movie. To be fair I could watch a whole movie about just the two of them and honestly wish I had. I don’t care about any other character in this movie as much as I care about Minnie and Celia’s story.
I love the way Minnie is so protective of Celia.
I loved these two!!
I know right!!
Minnie is my favorite character! She is so brave and authentic. That academy award was well deserved!! 👏👏
In that moment, you know Celia is scared and has a newfound respect for Minnie and what she did
Jessica finally gets recognized for her talent. Congratulations on your Oscar win ☺
Jessica is one I love !
Celia stole my heart. She was too advanced for those times
I freaking loved this movie and still do so very much!!!!!! Why can't we all be like these 2!!!!! Love this so much
Just the way she looked at Minnie towards the end was priceless.
When the novel came out and exposed the cruelty, it made everyone aware of it and who was who. That was such an effective blow to those who thought they were in power! The truth always blows the lies. 😌
All she wanted was a friend 😢😢😢
I wish Celia and Skeeter met. They would have been such great friends.
omg i've just realised they never had a scene together 😮
I think they did eventually!
@adrox1815 no they don't! I had seen the movie a few times before I realized that.
One of the best movies I've seen if not the best
The side-eye Celia gives Minnie at the end like “damn girl, you really did that 💩???” 😂😂
Don’t cry Celia :’( I’ll come over if they don’t come over.
"I'm nought rat fah this cana laugh, Meanny" I love it
Fallen Angel 😂
Octavia Spencer came to my school(^.^)(^.^)
I saw her speak at Albany, she's absolutely lovely and so funny :)
Barbie Movies455 That must’ve been so exciting! ♥️
Dorian Graye dumb asssss
I loved watching how these women build their friendship..... I imagine them as best friends for the rest of their lives.
Lol shell shocked ‘Thank you for telling me that’ with the sideways, ‘note to self never anger Minnie’ look hahaha Loved these two.
Their friendship is something magical
I’ve seen this movie dozens of times and I had NO IDEA that it was Jessica Chastain! Amazing actress…. She became Celia👏
It crazy how people hate the way Celia was treated and don't see an issue on how Minnie was treated
Jessica Chastain has been and is a wonderful actress. Her diversity for each character is A+
I would watch anything with Octavia Spencer in it. Shes one of a great actress of our time. Her acting is just phenomenal!
She was FABULOUS in Hidden Figures!!!!
Lol at the side eye
This was so funny. Celia had no words, the look on her face says it all. Lol I wonder if she was just a little scared of Minnie after? I loved their relationship, though. Seemed like they were friends by the end of the movie.
Minny exposed Hilly's nature and whilst the tidbid of the chocolate cake did scare Celia, it also gifted Celia some knowledge/power over Hilly.
The two best characters in this film- Both Octavia and and JEssica played their parts to a T. You can tell they had great chemistry.
Thing is Johnny and Cecilia obviously had more money than all those stuckup bit chez put together .And more heart and more character. You just know they and Minnie lived happily ever after👍❤
Minny don't burn chicken. Best line ever!!!!!
The she looked at her when she told her about that pie!!
The 'way' she looked at her..lol
Poor Celia 🥺 god I loved her. Minny helped her find her strength and Celia helped Minny as well. such a beautiful friendship
Celia scenes make me cry so hard.. I relate to this character so much
I am a huge fan of Jessica. I love her versatility and ability to disappear in a role. I loved her performance in "Zero Dark Thirty".
You gotta love her character! Both of them. Expert portrayal of both. You leave the movie wanting friends like those in your life.
I love this movie, and Celia was absolutely the most lovable character in it.
Celia rights hilly a check for "two sliced pie" 🤣🤣 awesome comeback!
*writes
I love Velia foot. So sweet and good friend. A friend like Celia is real gold .🥰
One of the best movies I love their friendship ❤
Y'all are making me want to rewatch this movie. 😅😭❤️
I dont know. But look at Celia's face, she must think that: Did I treat Minny not well? Did she put anything else in my food that I dont know? =)))
THen she cooks Minny a meal for a reason =))
lol j/k
This was the character that made me a big fan of Jessica!
“You can’t move back to sugar ditch” 😂😂
Celia and Minnie were my absolute FAVORITES in this movie!!!!
1:25 Celia looked at her in the end like "shit i aint fina piss you off bih!" 🤣🤣🤣
