How to Prepare PDF Patterns

  • If you're new to working with PDF patterns, here's a great tutorial on how to print, cut and assemble them. I share two different options for printing the patterns. I'm also demonstrating three ways to cut the patterns. If you've never assembled a PDF pattern before, don't worry, I've got you covered with step-by-step instructions. I even take you onto a website to observe as I order a PDF pattern. I mean, you never know. Someone may not have a clue about how it works.
    Sometimes when you're learning something new, you want all the steps, so that's what I'm providing here. Enjoy the video and maybe you will be inspired to start sewing with PDF patterns too.
    The dress I'm wearing in the video is McCall's 7563 (Out-of-Print)

    Many years ago I subscribed to a fashion magazine that included a multiple centerfold with sewing patterns that used the same premise. I am so glad to learn that today there is a source where single patterns can be accessed, as opposed to being saddled with an unwanted “ pattern package” 😊

    I used grid paper to cut my own pattern forms using this copier printed version as a template. I cut out the pieced paper form. Place it over the grid material available at cloth store by the yard. I use painter tape to hold them together. Remove easily without residue or damage. It works great for multiple uses.

    I avoided them like the plague for too many years. I think the first one I did was for my daughter who wanted a short cape to wear on a trip to Europe that would allow her some coverage and warmth but allow her to keep her arms and hands free. It wasn’t the best drafted pattern, but it opened my eyes to possibilities. Fast forward 7 years, I sew almost exclusively with them, everything from dresses, camis, tops, jackets/cardigans. In fact, I have only sewn maybe 2 or three of the big 4 in the last 3 years! This summer, I made 3 dresses, one for me, and one for both daughters and they wear the same size. I have done both print shop files and at home. I use he cheapest paper for at home, when the print shops closed for a while. I love that I can grade patterns easier. I used the true Bias cami pattern to make a slip for my daughter to wear under her dress, light colored linen. She was extremely pleased with both. Currently, I love Love Notions, Style Arc, Patterns 4 Pirates. So wonderful to buy one pattern and have the ability to do it in multiple sizes.
    PS, you have fallen into the rabbit hole, Alice!

    I use PDF patterns more than commercial patterns. 1) It is a good way to support small businesses. 2) You can find sew a longs from the pattern makers and their staff. 3) Some have very supportive Facebook groups and I’m not a fan of Facebook anymore but AMAZING positive sewing groups. Also if one decides to use pdfplotting.com its more economical to have several patterns done at once. Staples is also able to print AO patterns you would just use their blueprint printing service, but can be pricey depending on the pattern.

I don't mind putting them all together, kind of find it relaxing. Used a glue stick to put the pages together. I will be looking into the option of having them printed as one or two pages ....didn't know about that option, glad you shared that info! I enjoy your relaxed and thorough method of teaching...thanks so much for all you research and share with us. I recently learned of a pattern company Lekala Sewing Patterns (on-line) that will create PDF patterns for your personal measurements/height ...tried out two of their free patterns to see how well that worked out and the top and pants fit me perfectly! This was great, Anita. You are so thorough. Thank you for doing this. I avoided them, too. But, what I like most is the quality paper they can be printed on. Next, I think I would print two copies so I can make alterations on one and keep the original in case I mess up. I like supporting the independent pattern maker, too. But, I notice the big houses are even offering PDFs. Thanks, again. Take care.

    Great instructions Anita! I usually print the test page before the entire document. Ink is expensive and I am frugal. I will save the file with the other sizes removed and print at copy shop. Thank you for this lesson. I don't usually use my laptop. I didn't think to use my rotary cutter. 🤭

    Agree with others, beautifully explained. You are a natural teacher! It's demystified PDF patterns for me. That said, they are as expensive as buying ready to go patterns ( with the pre printed tissue and instructions), yet you're supplying the paper and doing quite a bit of prep to get it to where you can start cutting fabric. Hmnnnn🤨🙂

    • @AnitabyDesign
      @AnitabyDesign  Před 4 lety

      Yes, you're right. They are about the same in cost. The only problem is that not all the patterns are available "ready-to-go". If there's an option I've chosen the paper copy. But I'm gonna give this a try and see how I like it. I've heard that there are lots of free PDF Patterns available. We shall see what happens. 🤗 Thank you for your compliment.

    Excellent info. Anita, thank you. I love using pdfplotting, especially for the patterns that have a lot of pages like pants & maxi dresses & for the free patterns from outside the U.S. like those from Peppermint Magazine that only have AO & A4 print options (no pdf). I just sent off their woven Pocket Skirt & Bardon Dress patterns with a few others from Love Notions, Helen's Closet & Closet Core (all well designed pdf patterns). It is more expensive, but saves me so much time printing & taping those patterns. I agree ordering several patterns at once is more cost efficient. They ship fast too. Have a blessed day!
