Tony Humphries Is The Perfect Example Of What A DJ Is Supposed To Be.
As a teenager standing in line to get into the Zanzibar, you could feel the beat and vibrations pulsate thru your body. It was like no other feeling.
I 🎉 a
Facts
100% straight facts!
And the thing about Zanz's sound system ,i got off the bus by accident on night 3 blocks away and as i was walking i heard thumping bass coming from somewhere and thought it was another club in the area, but soon realized it was Tony trying to break the F'N concrete LOL. 3 city blocks and you could hear and start to feel the subs rockin.
I have always had much admiration for this man Tony Humphries - one of the most grounded, down to earth and genuine people I've had the good fortune to meet and be in the company of. Always learned from him as a teacher; inspired and excited by him - a national treasure!
God bless the Hump! #dondada 💕
A true House Music legend and an inspiration! Loved the Zanzibar!
TONY, thank you for the shout out to Andy & myself on The Beloved "Sun Rising" remix we did! We had and made good times in the studio those long nights... Thank you big bro!!! Thank you RBMA, some of the DJ's and House Music Lovers in the world needed this interview to remember what has inspired us to do what we do musically, TONY HUMPHRIES is a BIG reason for inspiration. Forever blessed working with you T. Hump!!!
JOn Marsh here ... thank you guys for turning out such incredible timeless mixes... all up on streaming platforms now for everyone to enjoy! open.spotify.com/album/0QmtNTJp1GNj2Ric6Xg8lr?si=wMnecctwTM2-jqrO2nO7Dg xx
Interviewer makes my skin crawl. Fascinating listening to Tony.
so much! rbma has so many better interviewers, yet this fuck is given some of the top names. the bernie worrell one is so painful. bernie gets visibly agitated.
Jules Badman Bro,yes the guy is obviously out of his league ,the interviewer, but he is a little awestruck so it is what it is but Tony is awesome!!!!
THE BRICK CITY LOVES YOU TONY
Salute to the Great DJ Tony Humphries #clubzanzibar #newjersey #newark
Sometimes I went to Zans just to listen to him play some amazing shit, I remember a mix he did with once in a lifetime by Talking Heads where he kept the beginning going before the vocal came in it had you in a trance.
it wasn't this was it? czcams.com/video/OvFombFbWZ8/video.html
I Remember Seeing Tony Play One Night And I Must've Went Up To Him A Dozen Times Asking For Names Of Records He Was Playing , And He Was The Coolest Guy , Didn't Get Pissed One Bit And Said Obviously You're A Dj So It's Alright , Glad You're Enjoying My Music . Utmost Respect For This Legend.
My late mentor Gerry would have loved this..we used to listen to cassettes of his early 90s mixes late into the night
One of my fave RBMA interviews. Tony is such a special figure.
So nice to see Tony getting lost in the music, overwhelmed with emotion, and his obvious passion/love for the music... Respect
YES!!! YES TONY LOL,HE SAID HE MADE ZANZIBAR HIS PARADISE GARAGE, and so yeah, why not? it's more cozy less to worry or think about, just concentrate on the music. But i wish i could've heard Larry play at the Garage in like say 80 to 86 cause thats when a lot of hot hot hot music came out(too many to try and list) but at that time i was barely going to basement/house parties, around the corner or next block was a different world in 1980,i didn't start to go to a club until like 84 (New Experience had just turned into Club Sensations) wanted to go to Paradisio but i heard bad stuff about the crowd, and i didn't start at Zanzibar until 86/87. Which where i got my Philly education, i never heard a DJ play like Tony Humphries(and still haven't really).
I've seen this man djing live and I must say both times were a pleasure, great nights, amazing music, always putting a vibe!
I'm always coming back and checking this video so you're going to see a few comments from me, i wanna say "This time" ... BY THE TIME I WAS OLD ENOUGH TO GET IN (about 86/ 87) .... House music was KING, the Philly stuff was still being played, mostly after 2am . Some nights he'd turn the system up SOOOOO LOUD !!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 people just went BANANAS!!!! JUMPIN UP AND DOWN, SCREAMING, SINGING ALONG WITH THE SONG... it was absolutely amazing to be in the atmosphere as a teen and into my early twenties.
Superb. I was at High On Hope when Tony Humphries played in London back in the day, hooked ever since.
I was lucky enough to be Tony's night in Tokyo and he delivered. Nobody has a deeper bag!
I had the pleasure of actually being in the booth with Tony at times at Club Zanzibar. Much respect goes out to Tony for what he has done for House music/Club Music/Underground Music or what ever you may call it. I just want to touch on a statement he made about " Structured Programming " I can't remember the exact date, But I remember asking him that same exact question...And he explained to me that very premise of how to keep a floor packed and consistent and I've use that same format in my career as a DJ and it has become second nature in all my sets. I haven't seen or heard from him in years, but he has truly become a force in music that sets him at the top of the game, Much respect Mr. Humpries. #livingledgend
I absolutely have the greatest respect and admiration for this this man! One of my influences as a DJ and a very nice person!
Tony Humphries rules
HISTORY ! ! 💯
NEW-JERSEY REPRESENT 🖤
One of my favorite albums is the Choice mix by Tony Humpries. Let's go back to the Zanzibar to see Tonayyyy!
These videos are so much better when they leave in the tracks
what lovely fella Tony is....
Changed my whole outlook when I heard TH residency at MOS 92, loved all the HOT 97 mix shows I used to trade with a guy in NYC. I still try to emulate Tony every mix I do!
Thank you Tony Humphries - What a Dj - What a man ❤️
marvelous! Thank you mister Tony
Having spoken to him a few times,he's as down to earth as he appears here
inspirational, thanks!
Much love and respect from Chicago!!!
Mr tony Humphreys thank you for the music. I was going to the Zanzibar before i was of legal age. And i enjoyed every minute.
Great posting
best thing red bull has ever produced.
my thanks for the education ! beautiful man .
Just love this guy. Thank you Tony from Nigel.
Best interview ever
Thanks for the Jersey House Music History Lesson :) Honest™
One of my inspirations to be a DJ
Great interview
Tony S2 maximum respect S2

Hallelujah.
Tony was the man
Lovely video
The legend
A legend!
Best radio dj ever....he can make you like what you think you dont like....
the legend the man
57:20 one of the best mixes of Tony, you can hear this mix here on CZcams, the track is Hear The Music remix by Gypsymen (Todd Terry)
Great history
MY MAN!
Genius!
ZZBAR always showed love..drive from LES NYC to Newark listening to Tony in car 98.7 Kiss while driving after making a track printed on reel that we just finished to bring to Tony. Open arms hugs from Carlton and Bruce always walked us to booth and there was TONY rooooockiiiiin. Everyone is dancing sweating listening to TONY on that system. Its hard to explain the feeling! Ill just say it was NUTZ.wish we can.
czcams.com/video/tMnXJaDiQWU/video.html
Was walking around LES listening to Kiss FM on my radio and this popped on...we went nuts
and its Romanthony not romananthony ..just had to make that clear
hella dope
the "UK / speed garage" thing wasn't really addressed here ; Mr Humphries wasn't biting, no matter how much the interviewer thought he was...
I wish the interviewer had not pushed him on this because he clearly didn't want to talk about it and gave him an opportunity to move on..
Wonderful to hear Celestrial Choir 'Stand On The World' (Larry Levan Mix).
+KC Management thanks for sharing information. In Thailand, people still dig classic disco and soulful house.
+KC Management how about I leave it for those who know. Some of my early tracks were posted on CZcams by someone and sometimes CZcams claimed somebody else owes the right to my songs....how weird isn't it?
+KC Management the music speaks for itself. Respect is overdue for sure, but the most important messages of the song spreads all over the global dance floors
Nice video
You can tell Tony LOVES music. Very hard to find a better DJ. Amazing he didn't have the need to produce much to stay on top. It's a shame though, he has a lot to offer there too! 🙌
period.
@58:00 that's the vibe
On playing " COMMERCIAL MUSIC " .... one night Tony played LADIES NIGHT by KOOL & GANG , he played it double layed (2 copies ) took one out letting the other go .... THEN he brought back from the TOP .... TURNED THE PLACE OUT !!!! i along with others were impressed by that. But something funny happened right after ... Tony went to take a break and the jock after him tried playing it AGAIN ... and you could hear Tony yelling NOOOOOOOOOOO, I JUST F'N PLAYED IT 3 TIMES !!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Epic
Tony is the pastor of the Zanzibar Church… his disciples were devout
Having said that, whoever is responsible for RBMA absolutely has the right idea with who matters in the history of this industry!!
Great DJ
🖤
Dj tony love you
I thought "Stand on the Word" was Larry Levan puppy. It does have his name and copyright on it
What's the track at 1:05?
BIG UP TONY HUMPHRIES~MY TOP INSPIRATION....BUT INTERVIEWER ON A SCALE 1 TO 10 HE GETS A 3~"WHO IS THIS LARRY LEVAN GUY"~SMH BUT TONY'S IS A LEGEND~LONG LIVE THE JERSEY SOUND....
DJLORDYASIN42 Of course the interviewer knows about Larry. He just wanted Mr. Humphries to talk about Larry.
***** No he didn't because he said "Who is this Larry Levan guy that you talk about" so he didn't know who this legend was.....
DJLORDYASIN42 Oh I missed that part, but still there is no way he didn't know. Any one who knows about "Stand On The Word" song knows about Larry Levan.
+DJLORDYASIN42 lol just curious because I love 90s house, but damn its tough to categorize! How would exactly describe the Jersey sound as opposed to NY or Chicago?
+AQUAPHREESH193 watch?v=3HnmwMmFA-I House is house.
I'm producing in ableton using stock synths analog and operator, asking how to sound design in this style? and music theory
also supporting the label and artist buying copies, clearly talent :)
JERZ 💯💯💯
Tony looks like Bill Duke
Zans was the shit! It should of been made a historical place in Jerz
What time would they stay open till
Diane : )
All these interviewers seem like they could use a shot of red bull. So low key and zero enthusiasm or energy for these great musical talents.
That's acedemia for ya. lol
Great intro tune? Sounds Spanish moorish ,, very great!
His father's band. Colombian
Brickcity baby Zanzibar was my spot
In addition to my below comment .... You see those 3 dudes dancing at the very end of that clip? The Heavy Dude is named APPLE( never knew his real name) he's no longer with us (so RIP APPLE) but the skinny dude , KAREEM, went on to be one of ZANZIBAR's DJ'S, he also had a record store for a few years "PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS", he's still around , look up DJ PUNCH MAN CAVE W/ KAREEM.
Ah! If i'm not mistaken, Kareem used to send some crazy fun videos on DHP in its last years (before the forums closed)
Any ideas on the first track (before Luv Dancin) on the break at 1:05:00 approx?
For anyone that cares, it is czcams.com/video/GJrjbV5eaOY/video.html.
What's the name of this song @ 58:59 ?
can anyone help me out with some of the songs he played at the end?
tom einstein "Where Will You Go When the Party's Over" by Archie Bell.
Tom Einstein E2E4 one of the longest songs ever made. I used to almost cry hearing it. It was one of the best ending songs for this Gentleman
Would it have been so hard to mix the music in at normal levels instead of the over-the-speaker audio?
looks like they fixed that lol
6:20 I love the gospel song. what's the title of the song? I NEED to get it!
***** Stand on the Word
+Anthony Arroyo Thank you!
I really love the song now. Through the internet site of RedBull where they listed a few important japanese musicians I found this song. There was this radio podcast of 2014 and right in the beginning there was this song :D
and now I know its name.
Red Bull you have some GREAT guests being interviewed, but the people you have interviewing them are terrible.
Agreed but the over intellectualised context itself already makes it a stiff interview situation. "Music Academy" is pretentious name and setting. A club set up would lend itself to everyone being more relaxed and at home. Not one of the guests they have had would have so intellectual about music. But I love to hear what Tony Humphries is saying and many others, so something good is coming out of it with all the wanking going on around it
lmao i was thinking the same shit this nigga asking some dumb ass questions
To continue from the above re: the host..yes he is terrible but he's probably talking to one of his heroes do we have to cut him a little slack. Again no disrespect to anyone.. let's just dig the music...
I agree with the comment below ... the interviews are unenthusiastic and monotone , sorry to say it but this interviewer and the interviewer who did the Nicky SIANO interview have had a personality bypass?
Can anyone please ID the track he droppes at 40:00 (Lyrics - Dancefloor of Live)
+DJ Andy
Phalon - "Dancefloor Of Life"
Id at 1:07:00 plsss someone?
Found it lol underground solution - luv dancin ✌
Hope this guy is joking with the "who is Larry Levan?'
he is
Colin Boyes Of course the interviewer knows about Larry. There is no way he does not know about Larry. He just wanted Mr. Humphries to talk about Larry.
joubert
Redbull - the best choice for Tony Humphries as a subject to interview, the worst choice interviewer wise. He could not have made it anymore flat and boring. Come on it's Tony Humphries!!
Oh man, I was thinking the same thing :( Could have been such a more well constructed interview. I wish Gerd Janson did it instead
RBMA has never not been cringe. Chubby sword guy interviewer - don't quit your day job.
All the hipsters!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love Tony Humphries, but this is such awkward set up. Interviewer : ummm, ummm.
how much are head nodding audience members paid. young cousins lookin for a j o b
