  • Hello Drum Nerds, welcome to my video about BAND-MAID (MANNERS & BLACK HOLE) - DRUMMER REACTS
This Band Maid song has got to be one of the most recommended videos from you yet, maybe second only to Freedom. I am utterly blown away by all their musicianship and talent. Those drums are some of the nicest I've heard in a long time however so if you know the wood or the mics please do comment below. Akane is one of the best drummers I've listened to in terms of skill, feel, timing and overall joy at playing!
    Original Video Here - • BAND-MAID / Manners, B...
    0:00 - 1:15 - Intro
    1:16 - 9:00 - Manners
    9:01 - 16:30 - Blackhole
It's one fantastic ride so far, you're all amazing and have been showing me some wonderful drummers and band; so for that I thank you!
Hope you're also excited to see some of my own videos once the studio is up and running.
Thanks again be well and keep your stick on the ice,
    Colin

By the way, since you are a Zepp fan you'll probably appreciate this story. While visiting Tokyo, Robert Plant caught a Band-Maid show. He was so impressed with Akane's drum chops that he asked to meet with her back stage because he wanted to get a picture with her. Akane thought she was being pranked, but eventually agreed to go meet with this "fan" that was waiting out in the hall. The picture of them together is floating around out there. I'm sure a search for Robert Plant and Akane would get you there. Definitely beyond the event horizon.

@@DRUMNERD Hard to argue against Rush or Zep (and I have no reason to). But we are a few generations down the road and rock always needs new talent to keep it going. There are several reasons to love this band...great musicianship, great writing, self assembled rather than a industry assembled, etc. What put them over the top for me was, after so many years of rock and metal being defined by bands with "attitude", these young ladies are clearly having fun and want to share that fun with us. I don't know if I have ever seen a drummer have as much fun as Akane, and it is infectious.

I'm an old dude that grew up with Zep, Floyd, Deep Purple, Hendrix etc and Band-Maid has become my favorite band, superb talent and musical instincts from all band members and a constant source of musical joy. I look forward to more of your reactions and analyses .
one drummer that a Drum Nerd must be aware of is 12 year old Yoyoka from Japan. She started drumming at age 2!! by age 8 she was offering a drum lessons on her channel. she now has 180k subs on CZcams, has been on Ellen DeGeneres, has been reacted to by Robert Plant for her "Good Times Bad Times" cover and by Ian Paice(Deep Purple) for her "Burn" cover who then reached out to her to work with him on a musical project and also high praise from Dave Grohl. She is now 12 years old and a multi instrumentalist and writer. her entire family are very good musicians. You should check out "Ian Paice Deep Purple "Yoyoka" BURN reaction" on CZcams or anything off her channel

JB is my all time favourite drummer with the Professor a close 2nd. MISA is now my all time favourite bassist. Did you notice the bass solo playing underneath the lead guitar solo? They have so many songs that I could recommend. Stay with the live stuff for awhile. Real Existence from 2018, Domination, Freedom and Play from 2020 are great as well. "I feel like a deer in the headlights" is a great way to express listening to Band-Maid. I'm one of those people who pretty much lost interest in rock/metal a long, long time ago, but am experiencing a renaissance with Band-Maid. Love them to bits. Even as someone who knows next to nothing about music in the technical sense I can just FEEL the talent and greatness of this band in every area. There's so much to appreciate that it overwhelms.
A hell of a lot of credit for that has to go to Kanami for her compositions - she's so selfless and clearly wants everyone to have their moment while also making sure that they're always complimenting each other. I honestly can't think of any band I've ever listened to where each instrument sounds so consistently crystal clear, in perfect sync and blending with each other while occupying their own space. I'm not saying those bands don't exist of course, but for me it's just never been so blindingly obvious. The talent of these girls is simply off the charts.

Miku (rhythm guitarist, backup vocals) was originally going to be the lead vocalist when she formed the band (oh yeah, she did that too). She decided on her own that she didn't have the vocal power to properly sing the kind of music that she wanted Band-Maid to play, so they auditioned Saiki. Note that Miku was concerned about her power, not range or ability. Her vocal range is actually wider than Saiki's on both the top and bottom of the scale, and she nails both high and low harmony because she's a lead singer in her own right. Saiki is the power, Miku is the range, and they're both required to make Band-Maid what it is.
Now, you were also complimenting Miku on her bends...would you believe that she had never played a guitar until after the band formed? She was taught by Kanami from scratch after they brought Saiki on. Kanami is one heck of a teacher, as they had to get Miku her training on the job while touring. Miku often does a lot of the guitar 'tricks' in the songs, like the pick slides you saw in Manners, while Kanami still does the more technical parts such as tapping and pinch harmonics. But we're all waiting for Miku to bust out some shredding lead work, because it seems like she's getting closer to that all the time.

Possibly the best Metal band around, Do Break the wall live, the drummer is tiny, and adorable, but is an absolute power house, you will be exhausted just listening to how she slams.. Kanami's backing tracks are part of the reason they're so tight, and once Akane locks into it there's no throwing her off. And unless you hear something they aren't playing like a synth or something like that, you almost don't notice them, unless of course something breaks down. There's a video of those moments from Fan-Cams, but of course there would never be an official release of that. But sometimes even vocals are doubled, cymbals. You just never know. That's why people have accused BAND-MAID of not playing their own instruments. But even huge bands like The Who & KISS have had backing tracks in LIVE performances. And the computer has been lost by the airlines before, and they rearrange a few things and play just fine without it. To see them LIVE you may have to join their Fan Club. The show I saw was not advertised at all. But if you want odd fills and beats "Dice', 'Puzzle, 'Real Existence'' etc . . . 'Black Hole' sounds very much like 'Different'. If you like that type of song. But to me 'Rinne' is a better drum song. But if you don't mind a song that's more Pop than Metal influenced check out their Power Pop Masterpiece, 'Blooming'. It is perfection. But also, you did 'Freedom' LIVE without 'Domination' LVE? Go back and check out the turnaround after her mini solo. That's one of the tastiest drum licks ever! Boom Boom Boom Bip Bam Bap Bap Bap Diddelump! Rinse & Repeat . . .

One of the somewhat unfortunate side-effects of how dense their songs are is that every member is usually doing something awesome and you'd have to have a camera dedicated to each one, then watch all five to see everything you want.

so i just subbed because you actually take the time to describe what your seeing/hearing, I am a hardcore Maidiac, i have to say im well over 60 and have been listening to rock music since the 60's, I believe these ladys are the up and coming saviors of rock the way it was meant to be, i started looking into these ladies a couple years ago, and found this story, Miku the rhythm guitarist, band founder and lyrics writer was working in a Japanese maid cafe, and had her own band for J-pop music, (epic fail), but then she had the idea of a group of maids playing hard rock music, this is known in Japan as the gap, what you see and what you get are very different, so she found a lead guitarist (Kanami) on line playing Piano and guitar on YT videos, she went and asked her if she wanted to help her build a band, she agreed and said she knew a drummer (akane) who played backup for her on her videos, Akane agreed and said she knew an excellent bassist (Misa) who went to music school with her, and they started their band, however things didnt go real well, until Miku came to the realization that her voice wasnt strong enough for the music they wanted to play, so she basically fired herself as lead singer and found a new lead singer (Saiki), things started slow and they might have broke up in 2014 , but all of a sudden their first MV "Thrill" got 2 million hits in 2 weeks on YT. and like i said before now you have one of the best hard rock band in the world, sorry this got a bit long but i enjoy watching someone get hooked on this band

Miku, the girl doing the backing vocals and guitar bends, couldn't even play guitar when they started. She has put in a lot of work under the tutelage of Kanami to become a legit guitarist. You nailed the band's music right away. Well structured songs, talented musicianship and sensory overload to Black Hole.
Kanami is the genius composer and lead guitarist. You see what isolation did here. Totally creative and diverse. But that's sums up The Maids though.
The more you listen to their music, the more you'll learn to appreciate how talented they all are.
Akane is a very good drummer. The speed and diversity here is excellent. Listen to her work on Warning (the MV is action packed). It's Frenetic too.
Misa on bass is continually being creative. No main bass line for this woman.
Miku plays rhythm guitar and sings backing vocals here (lead sometimes).
    Saiki sings lead.
Here's a selection of more live material. Real Existence, Onset, Play
For MV's. Warning, Daydreaming, Bubble, Choose Me, Rinne. So many more. Listen to Hibana off their latest EP. No MV but it's well..just damn good...you'll know why when you listen to it...Gotcha Gotcha Gotcha
Enjoy the musical journey. You'll never look at music the same way again.
