  • This is the Second Episode of The Visual Scholar Podcast - With Tim Mcburnie.
One of the questions that comes up again and again is... How much should I draw?
Do you need to draw 18 hours a day until your fingers bleed? What about burnout? Does more equal better results? What if you're a professional?
What makes a difference when it comes to learning? What is actually happening when we begin to learn and perfect a new skill like Drawing or Art.
In this Episode I go deep into the concepts of Time, Energy and Focus. What does it take to make it as an artist... What does it take to keep going and get to the next level?
I have spent a lot of time mentoring students and seeing everyone explore different strategies when it comes to learning art. There are many traps that present themselves when it comes to focus. Especially in the current age of distraction.
One of the best things you can do is to spend some serious time and effort understanding how you personally relate to the ideas of productivity and focus. Knowing your own mind and body is key. When do you work best... how do you work best... what can you do to set yourself up well to succeed- To give yourself the best chance of deploying your energy and focus properly.
This is not just about grit, determination and hustle... pushing yourself will only get so far. The key is to build good habits and rituals around sitting down... to create.
This episode breaks down some of the key ideas around focus, productivity and learning. With advice for how to apply them as an Artist.
    Books mentioned:
The Power of Full Engagement: by James E. Loehr and Tony Schwartz
    Flow: by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

There's a dark humor mini comic by Mizuki Shigeru, 'The Power of Sleep' that I think every artist should read. Can't overstate how important sleep, regular meals, and hydration are. It made me so sad seeing classmates in art school pulling regular all-nighters for their work. If you aren't meeting fundamental basic needs, everything else suffers. Caffeine is really like a credit card too, you pay back the energy you get with interest later. Thanks for the vid Tim!

I'm a stay at home dad of two that's only a couple months into attempting to 'get gud' at art.
This idea of energy management is huge for me.

Awesome! Yeah that’s a challenge for sure! I think these ideas are critical for tackling that type of situation. It can be difficult to find proper focus time. And often you don’t have a huge amount of it :-)

I love this podcast your doing its simple and chill and you've been a massive help in my artistic development
I know this may sound dramatic but your one of the main reasons I didn't quit art and actually stuck with it and got better

Incorporating positive emotion is a great point. I try to do this and I find that when I think about the act of drawing, it really is correlated with those positive emotions. Usually when I learn something big or come up with something that I didn't know I had the skill to pull off

I found that recording my art process forces me to focus on the art and nothing else. Sometimes I put something on in the background but it’s usually just me and the paper. The thing is that I didn’t realize “why it works” until I watched this video, so thank you!

I run one 3 hour drawing session / day or 21 hours /week. This includes four 5 min breaks in each session.
Im 45 now and only started drawing 2 years ago as a complete begineer. There hasnt been one week where i haven't practiced for 21 hours.
My progress has been beyond my expectations.

omg, I had the same shock when I went to a 9-to-5 work. It's like, wow, I don't actually have to be "on" and 100% all the time? What??? Oh is that why I've been so stressed? XD

  • @DennisCNolasco

Great podcast Tim. I haven’t heard anyone discuss the topic of artificial studying “aids” for any type of learning/studying video, let alone art videos, so I’m glad you mentioned it. I bet many people wonder how certain people are able to do those 16+ hour days, but of course they don’t mention their secret sauce. IMO, better to stay healthy and learn sustainable study habits than to be dependent on substances that will be less effective over time and potentially dangerous to your health in the long run. (Assuming they actually worked those hours and not just “working.”)

    • @Tim-Mcburnie
      @Tim-Mcburnie  Před rokem +1

Yeah! This is a real topic for sure. It's interesting not many people seem to discuss it. It seems to be political in some ways.
I know for a fact that some people who have done really well at high pressure top art schools pulling all-nighters (or more... days and days at a time) to produce high quality work... were using 'stuff' to stay focused.
I'm glad that bit spoke to you. I don't honestly know a lot about it, but thought it was worth mentioning (I come from a more alternative/natural health and wellbeing background... so it just seems crazy to me.) But I know that for a lot of students the pressure to do this to keep up is there. And there is not a lot of counter info on how to be more focused through natural means.
