Starobilsk is an eastern Ukrainian city located on the left bank of the Aidar River. This is a city founded by the Kozaks in a wild field, which later became a city of merchants and farmers. There are no mines or industrial plants here. This is a leisurely and quiet city, where the favourite mode of transport is cycling. As the locals call it, "lisapet". Many famous masters of the word were born in Starobilsk. A dissident and one of the Sixtiers, Ivan Svitlychnyi, and our contemporary poet, winner of several literary awards, Serhii Zhadan, were born here. And you can also see Starobilsk in the films! It was here that the Wild Field film was made. This was an adaptation of one of Zhadan's works.
Since the beginning of March 2022, Starobilsk has been under Russian occupation. Local residents met the invaders with resistance: they blocked the road for Russian tanks, went to rallies with national flags and sang the national anthem of Ukraine. Until now, the partisans of Starobilsk continue to put a spoke in the wheels of the occupation authorities and do not get tired of reminding them that Starobilsk is Ukraine.
