  • If you've never heard of Charlie Calzaretta, you're not alone! Let's learn some more about him.
Link to a full analysis of his solo on "Blue Lou": • Vibes Solo Analysis: '...
Charlie Calzaretta (1921-1986) was a Chicago area vibraphonist who recorded with the Art Van Damme quintet in the 1940s and 1950s. I love discovering musicians like this - he was clearly a total pro and could swing with anyone. It's kind of a shame that he never recorded anything under his own name, but at least we have the recordings he did make. It's worth a rabbit hole for sure.
Here is the link to the 1951 'David Garroway At Large' clip: • art van damme-show in ...
Here is 'Blue Lou', recorded with Art Van Damme in 1953: • The Art Van Damme Quin...
Do you agree with my analysis of his style? Let me know in the comments! Let me know of other unsung vibes heroes as well!
    Thanks as always for watching.

Thank you Tim for producing this stuff, most appreciated. Looking forward to see and hear you in June in Unterfahrt Jazz-Club Munich. Sorry, I can not make it to NY ;-).

And here I thought that Terry Gibbs was the pinnacle of the "lost" vibraphonists. Thanks for expanding my personal musical horizon. Danke Schoen!

Calzaretta is on it! Some of his solos remind me of Godfrey Hirsch's who both were self-taught. Godfrey played with Louie Prima as well as Pete Fountain.

I used to play drums with Teddy Charles in Long Island. I also studied with him on vibraphone. Great player but as we say, quite of a "son of a gun." He at one point owned a large schooner that he used to take tourists out in Greenport, N.Y.

Yeah I actually have him in mind- didn’t he quit playing and just captain a ship in the Caribbean for 30 years or so? I have a couple of his records. Cool stuff.

Yes, exactly. A fan of his (and jazz player) happened to be in Caribbean and went on one of his cruises and suddenly asked, are you the Teddy Charles the vibraphonist? I spent a lot of time with him, very smart guy. By the way Tim, I have bought your book and love your videos. I am mainly a drummer but studied classical marimba at Oberlin and am relearning the vibes (Musser grip). @@TimCollinsVibes

Just think how many other great players there were who never got recorded much but were as good as those that did.
