Fantastic little engines but imo, they could have done more for the money! Next you have to try the 00 version - from what I've heard (and seen from a friend!) they're fantastic!
As far as value. You can expect to pay £140 for a steam A4 loco without lights but admittedly with detailed drive rods etc. Which puts the trailer car at about £50. Compare to a pullman with lights this is not far off. I think Hornby should make an HST starter pack which would be a brilliant entry in this scale, and far less fragile.
And 21 have been exported so far 11 in Mexico and 10 to Nigeria plus a load of mark 3s. Some of the cross country ones were exported within a couple of weeks of finishing in the uk.
I have this version of the set, but still waiting for the coaches to be delivered. Once my layout has power, I'll see about chipping my HST and putting it through its paces.
Here in Australia, we have a locomotive that was heavily based on the HST called the XPT. They are currently still in service but aging, and I believe they are planning on phasing them out relatively soon
Fun Fact, the HSTs used be classed as Diesel Electric Multi Units as seen with the either 253 or 254 number on the fron 253 being Western Region, 254 being Eastern Region, this can also be seen as the PCs are in the coach format of numbering in TOPS with the region also. However they were classed as Diesel locos and coaches when BR found it to be a pain to have them in fixed rakes instead allowing for PCs to be swapped between sets.
Hornby's latest news video tells us that these will be available in a pack with two coaches at £249.99, which is helpful (although you'll still need 3 or 4 more coaches for a realistic train).
I agree with you Sam that the finish should be more satin as on their latest OO scale locomotives. And yes, price is to high! A Pico TT DB ICE 3 with two cars comes at 182.5€ retail. But a single Arnold TT ( =Hornby Group ) diesel Bo-Bo loc cost 175€. Must be company price politics... Otherwise a nicely detailed and fantastic runner. Thanks for reviewing.
It seems overall that the TT range by Hornby is well thought, even if it does not goes with a wide variety of vehicles yet. This model is nice and worth a buy. If I would be starting model trains from scratch by now, the TT offer would have my ear.
near £200 for what is essentially a loco and a lit coach seems a tad ludicrous to me. it's a good loco, but I think if the second engine isn't powered it should be more around £150. either that or add a coach or two into the pack. that would've been a great deal! An inter city starter set i think would actually be a good idea for hornby. price it at 200 to 300 and give it a decent number of coaches. since it is a high speed engine some extra straights thrown in might be a good idea as well.
To tell you the truth, I barely got any work done today, my mind kept thinking about you... How many videos have you prepared for April the First this year? 😉
I’d like to see another manufacturer get into TT; maybe MicroTrains who makes great freight cars (vans and wagons, for you British folk) in N scale here in the States. Perhaps Dapol or Bachmann UK. Maybe even Kato.
If you set both decoders to the same address you should be able to programme CV29 on the dummy loco to reverse the lights so they're the opposite of the powered one.
I seem to recall the 00 scale 40th anniversary HST pack from Hornby costing £219.99 less than a decade ago. The fact that this is the same loco, same manufacturer, same livery even, but in a smaller scale, yet it’s the same price? Either inflation has royally messed up the hobby or Hornby are greedy, claiming TT:120 is more affordable and 00.
Smaller size, less hand applied details, more molding, equals a cheaper price... Always has been that way, its why Hornby produced so many pocket rockets...
I think the answer lies in looking at everything you purchase today vs a decade ago. Utilities, Eating Out, car prices… the list is endless. It’s not a “Hornby” issue.
blue and yellow one end, intercity the other end. with mix of coaches in same two liveries as at change over. I will be using both power cars on this train with the dummies and gwr brake coaches on the GWR mainline section for interest only.
Lovely model and a credit to Hornby. Bit expensive I agree, but we're used to Hornby ovepricing, and a satin sheen isn't too much to ask. Love to see some MK 3s in the consist. Cheers Sam.
Great bit of kit in TT, thanks for that. I am supposed to be in the UK in May and I will try to get that set and the 08 class as well. In terms of very good US HO scale models you can't go wrong with Walthers Mainline equipment. So far I have not had one bad item from them. YMV.
With the new train pack announced, it's only an extra 25 at the retailer's for what I'd amusing is the same drive car and dummy car but with 2 coaches, don't think they'll sell well as just a the power cars. Unfortunately for those that bought them without the coaches.
Great video. Just need to do the OO version now. If you do get one of the latest OO versions, be weary of the fan mechanisms as the lubricant Hornby used in them can jam them up which i demonstrated in a couple of my own reviews
One of my all time favourite trains. You should absolutely review the MK3s as well. FYI Dapol do a fairly impressive N gauge set like this, both PC / Dummy and book sets with 2 MK3s included. These are significantly cheaper than the TT equivilant as well.
Peco were the first Manufacturer to announce the launch of their T.T range, when do you intend to review their rolling stock range?. No locomotives to review of course as they still haven't produced any, but their waggons look interesting to the untrained eye. Can't fault your Hornby review, Good work 👏 👍.
Money, money, money.... it all comes down to money. For me, TT scale is and was, always perfect. I would love to return to this wonderful hobby.. but.... these prices? Forget it.... learn to play an instrument.. it's cheaper, more challenging and it broadens the mind.
I'm very tempted to get one of these models after seeing your review regarding new models im hoping with the announcements on Tuesday a first or second generation multiple unit might be announced and maybe diesels from the 50s and 60s
I will admit I have been waiting to see these, with them being based on the new tool HSTs from hornby they are sure to be excellent models, currently I only have one set of the OO premium HST power cars from hornby but will hopefully have another set soon when the new GNER ones are released.
Good looking model. Too bad it doesn't come with coaches. I hope Sam gets to review some Japanese N scale models some day, where you get full train sets for less than that. Even despite of new tooling, inflation, shipping and whatnot. :)
I have a 9 Car HST in Intercity livery by Hornby (7 coaches plus 2 power cars) and am absolutely delighted with it. It is a stunning model with excellent performance and wonderful appearance. I also have the sound version of the set you review here. I see that you consider this set to be expensive/overpriced. Indeed you mention this several times. Can I ask what you are comparing the price with ….given that you don’t seem to have any other manufacturer’s TT models??? As you are aware the Hornby Intercity 2 power car set with sound and 2 mk3 coaches cost £366 (From Rails). By way of comparison, my KRES Goritz 4 car express railcar with sound cost me last year £684 (price now is £741). My KRES Flying Hamburger 4 car set with sound cost £802. A single add-on coach for the Flying Hamburger cost me a further £140. Compare this with a Hornby TT120 coach at £34.10. I have a sizeable TT collection and find the Hornby TT120 items to be really excellent value for money compared to other items on the TT market and I think your comments on value for money are misplaced here. (Note I live in France so there were no UK import duty charges on the Kres items.)
The new Hornby Class 43 / Intercity 125 looks very nice and it runs very well. Plus, I do like this model, but the quality is a bit off and it is too expensive which I do have to agree with you Sam. Overall, it is a pretty good model.
An HST is always a safe bet, a true icon of the railways and the power cars do look like they're nicely done. The ride height has me a bit concerned now though. I'm old enough to remember seeing Mk1 coaches coupled to Mk3 coaches on the West Coast Mainline, and they were the same height. The HST power cars tower above those Mk1 coaches, so are the Mk3 coaches going to be as tall or are they going to be the same height as the Mk1 coaches as they should be...and in either case, which model has Hornby got their measurements wrong on?
You need Mk3s Sam . Please review . I’m very interested but will only invest in TT120 when we get critical mass , to me that means the promised 37 and 47 . Once these in place I could contemplate a layout with the 08 and 50 . Would like a Met Camm dmu too . But I have a soft spot for these HSTs I remember seeing them new at Berwick Upon Tweed in 1979 . So it’s a definite possibility once more blur/grey stock available .
An equitable review again Sam. We have been wondering if H have their TT made by Arnold which are their acquired TT subsidiary. We question this because Arnold's prices seem to be far better whilst fidelity seems upping H's. A bit awkward but fidelity is difficult to compare on pictures alone. Prices however are contrasted easy peasy by looking into both's webshop. Perhaps getting some Arnold stuff for some comparison would be an idea Sam. It would be most interesting actually. Cheerio.
@@veitwilberg1277 Having looked at Tillig's webshop and prices converted to Sterling, an ICE loco set comes at least with 1 coach at around a tad lower RRP than H's HST which comes without even a coach as demonstrated by Sam. However..., almost no rolling stock is readily available on Tillig's webshop... Can we assume that Tillig works on pre-order only?
@@lindaoffenbach With Tillig most models work pre-order only, especially the so-called limited editions, that only get manufactured if enough pre-order is issued. About half the models that are quite generic models for the most TT-involved countries are manufactured in a way that you can either pre-order them, or you can place an order in the year after initial delivery, and a second run is going to be made 1-3 years after that. There are very few products that are available from the warehouse.

Love a class 43, definitely one of the all time favourites, TT is an interesting scale but I don't see the point in it and I'm sticking with my 00 gauge, this was a very interesting and great review as usual keep up the amazing work! :)
The selling points are there (more space-efficient than OO yet larger than N, standardized features and quality, etc.) are there, but the question is whether it’s worth switching. And with a very minimalistic range, even the inquisitive will struggle to be motivated to make the tradeoff. Sam’sTrains video “Was TT a Mistake?” (or was that just the sentence from the thumbnail) analyses the predicaments Hornby will experience in selling the scale quite well.
I have to agree that I don't really see the point of TT if it is purely on the space element. As others have said I will stick with my extensive 00 gauge layout and I make do with the space I have and compromise like lots of us in the hobby do. I think TT is vanity project and feel they the 00 gauge range has suffered massively over the past few years because of this. Most of the so called new modern image stock is just old Lima tooling tarted up a bit. Not saying there is anything wrong with that as I loved the Lima models back in the day. I think this the 00 gsuge old tooling locos could be a great way to get new people into the hobby if the prices are too correct. Sorry to bang on about prices again but it is an issue even though some in the hobby seem to think it is not an issue.
@@jonathanmillar1975 Here was the complete list of official reasons. I’m guessing people will beg to differ on the price, but if anyone wants to argue about any of the points being valid, it would be helpful if you watched Sam's video first so you know you're not missing any critical information (It is called "Hornby TT:120 | Was It A Mistake?" by the way). Do more with a given space Less fiddly than N scale Cheaper than 00, but similar detail Models in scale with track Cohesive range (Referring the couplings, DCC compatibility, etc) To be fair, Sam’sTrains suggested that there would need to be at least 20 engines in the range before people would start taking it seriously.
@Charmaster04 Just to clarify, I did watch Sam's video, which was thought-provoking on the subject, which, in my opinion, has resulted in both positive and negative responses from the railway modelling world. Like anyone, you can make your own mind up on the subject. I have previously committed on Sam's channel that IMO Hornby and Bachmann have had a bit of a monopoly in 00 gauge, but in the last 5 to 10 years they have had a shock with the likes of Dapol, Accurascale, Cavalex and Revolution Trains coming onto the market. Hornby don't seem to be up for the fight, so to speak. The question I posed is, would Hornby have been better investing in the 00 gauge offering. As I have previously posted on a number of sites I have nothing against Hornby, and know that they can make brilliant models which are reliable, run well and have super detail when they want too (I am a diesel modeller Class 56 and Class 60 been good examples). Unfortunately, Cavalex have stepped up the game with their Class 56 and suspect their Class 60 will be equally as good and prices are less than the Hornby models.
The thing I love about Sam's trains is that he can tear down Hornby and call them out when they try to pull nonsense, but doesn't hold a grudge when they put out a nice model.
Amazing to see the newer GWR livery get some love with these new HST sets! I would love to see the older First Great Western livery too though!
Another great video sam I'm not that interested in tt scale but I do like the intercity 125's so this was down my line
Happy Easter Sam
TT isn’t for me unfortunately but nice to see it all the same.
Would love a comparison between the similar era APT-E and APT-P in oo gauge.
That's understandable - yeah I'd like to do a comparison!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
blue and yellow one end, intercity the other end. with mix of coaches in same two liveries as at change over.
YMV.
No problem glad you liked it! That sounds great - hope you enjoy the models if you get them!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Fantastic Adam - I'll have to look out for Dapol's - didn't know they had one!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Peco were the first Manufacturer to announce the launch of their T.T range, when do you intend to review their rolling stock range?. No locomotives to review of course as they still haven't produced any, but their waggons look interesting to the untrained eye. Can't fault your Hornby review, Good work 👏 👍.
Great though more value in set and most of us have paid out already to get started. May hang on for the 66
Money, money, money.... it all comes down to money.
For me, TT scale is and was, always perfect. I would love to return to this wonderful hobby.. but.... these prices?
Forget it.... learn to play an instrument.. it's cheaper, more challenging and it broadens the mind.
Also there is the train set with sound ( £306 shop discount price )
I've been thinking, maybe you should put the scale along with the ranking in your books
I'm very tempted to get one of these models after seeing your review regarding new models im hoping with the announcements on Tuesday a first or second generation multiple unit might be announced and maybe diesels from the 50s and 60s
I agree on price maybe if you had a centre coach the price would have been reasonable as a train pack offering.
honestly if Hornby made an LNER O4, id get into TT scale immediately
I think you might be in for a long wait...
The lights look significantly better than the 00 version… have hornby updated the 00 one to look like that in recent years?
Happy Easter all. I’d love to see one in the green East Midlands livery.
Cheerio.
Waiting for sam to test something from Tillig.
Bit off topic but woukd love to see bachmann class 37 william cookworthy cornish railways
I want to love this scale so desperately, but with how it is now, I don’t think I’ll pick any of it up.
Great review Sam, so Hornby can produce a great model, sadly to expensive. There should have been at least one coach for the money. Thanks Sam, regards to Chloe, we haven't seen for ages. God bless you both
someone needs to make a Hornby custom of Pip and Emma from the RWS cause why not?
I have two HST. 1 and 2 coaches in swole livery in witch I have fitted lights.
The other 1 is in GWR livery sounds fitted.
No coaches yet for this one.
I am doing a video on the light. See my video on fitting a sound chip.
StevenTT120
Swole is a great livery
Thanks just put light in the crotch
Hey Sam, I think the next models you could review could be more German engines. Maybe like a BR 80, BR 55 or BR 56.
Continue the good work btw love Ur vids 👍👍👍
a fellow tt scale folk i honeslty prefer tillig Bahn's or Roco's track than any other but this class 43 is incredibly beautiful i am a sucker fo british locos like that one also can someone tell me where i can find what the 125 interCity consist cars are?
Really like the look of this. I've seen they've just released a train pack with coaches and maybe track too. Now my question to you is, at an RRP of £250 do you think we will be receiving the same product as you have got, or a Railroad type equivalent, seems too good value to be true if it is the same quality
Will you review the OO HSTs Sam? Some liveries have come down in price. :)
How about a logbook for TT scale, as this would be better than putting locos of different scales up against eachother!
would love the Mark 3 coaches when it is convenient
Convenient as in available? I have mine on pre-order; I believe they are due Q1 (already passed) or Q2.
thanks for this film sam. will be buying 2 sets to make up a mixed set. caroline
Hi Caroline. Mixed in what way?
Looks very nice. Very good. The little baby stunter looks cute. But these look cool. Keep being awesome my friend. Ur trains are the best. Keep up the good work. Soon be buying a new train soon
I don't think baby stunters are legal these days. Medically outlawed in the 1970s.
please compare it to a dapol n gauge hst. the dapol version is fairly old now but would be interesting to compare detail and value for money with hornby tt.
I see rails have the kato 800 series in n gauge for £200. Thats with three carriages. Cant see how the hornby price strategy will encourage tt scale
Low co motives. Love that way you say that.
Have you ever tried the OO versions? I thought the ‘LNER Silver Jubilee’ version would of been right up you’re street, especially with the recent clearance sales on them
I am hopint Hornby release this as 4-car train pack as they have done in OO. Just the two ends for £200 is a bit too pricey. Thanks for uploading.
I was expecting you to review these with some of the matching mark 3 coaches. I just assumed you left them out because they weren't in stock yet.
i like the hst 125 in tt scale it has a nice livery and nice details.
i hope that hornby next release in tt has the same crisp detalis and colors and a good quality motor and bouild.
happy easter sam.
🐣🐣🐣🐰🐰🐰
a bit of a shame they didn't do the tooling for the XPT at the same time. Would seam like an easy win - in a market segment that is underserved.
I'd like to see a review of the TT Mark 3 coaches please.
It would excellerate the development of the scale if other manufacturers offered items. I wonder if rhey will?
Scotrail Sam. Scotrail run them in Inter 7 City livery, connecting the major cities of Scotland.
Lack of a satin or glossy finish is strange, as you say. Otherwise pretty amazing. I'm sure TT will take off really well if they keep this up.
Awesome video today Sam I think hornby should make this a train set
I'm not really a fan of diesel locomotive Sam, but great review ;)
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Love a class 43, definitely one of the all time favourites, TT is an interesting scale but I don't see the point in it and I'm sticking with my 00 gauge, this was a very interesting and great review as usual keep up the amazing work! :)
Yeah it's iconic isn't it?? That's fair enough - I hear the OO one is awesome too!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Do more with a given space
Less fiddly than N scale
Cheaper than 00, but similar detail
Models in scale with track
Cohesive range (Referring the couplings, DCC compatibility, etc)
To be fair, Sam’sTrains suggested that there would need to be at least 20 engines in the range before people would start taking it seriously.
It’s a bit cheeky calling it a pack when they didn’t include any passenger carriages. It’s just a loco, another Hornby ripp off
Awesome video Sam's trains
Happy Easter everyone, nice review
Have you considered reviewing Rapido's Royal Hudson? Or the Jeco X2000?
I wonder what other types of locomotives we're are going to get in TT scale Sam, I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
With the TT event set for Tuesday, hopefully we will know more soon
Everything is identified on the relevant part of Hornby's website 🎉
They are Pip and Emma from The railway series
Hi Sam, from your experience what gauge is your favourite?
