  • THEY CALLED IT THE CRUISE FROM HELL.
Passengers are calling theirs cruise on P&O cruise lines a cruise from hell. They feel it was so bad that they are gathering together and suing the cruise line. Was it rough seas? maybe bad food or missing all their ports? Maybe there were lots of fights onboard. No, the reason they are suing is they caught norovirus.

I would like to see tong holders because if a person puts the tong on top of the food it’s no different than they placed their hands on the food. The best practice is to have the crew serve the food.

I'm weird... as soon as I get to my cabin, I flush the toilet, I run the shower and sink to make sure everything drains properly, I check the sliding door to the balcony and make sure the fridge is cold. If there are any problems, I can notify the staff immediately and get everything taken care of on day 1 instead of later.
The staff are great, but the previous guest could have done something.... unusual... to the cabin.

Ventura is renown for the lack of sanitisation. We were on a back to back on Ventura and there was zero sanitization, as an example, no hand sanitizers in any of the restaurants, passengers being permitted to go to breakfast in their night wear. During the first cruise we decided that we would get off when we returned to Southampton, we advised the loyalty desk that we would be disembarking and our reasons, we were then called to a meeting and aired our views. We were assured that if we stayed on things would improve. Fortunately things did improve but we shouldn't be telling them what to do. It's about time P & O were taken to task, it's not just Ventura, although the worst we've seen in their fleet, but cleaning on some of the other ships is very poor. We have now abandoned our loyalty with P & O (over 30 cruises) and we are currently enjoying trying other companies.

There are several studies and articles that critique the effectiveness of norovirus precautions on cruise lines:
      1. **Surge at Sea: Alarming Increase of Norovirus Outbreaks on Cruise Ships** - This article highlights the ongoing challenges of controlling norovirus on cruise ships, emphasizing the need for enhanced preventive measures. It points out that despite efforts, the close quarters and shared facilities on cruise ships make it difficult to contain the virus².
      2. **Norovirus on Cruise Ships: Should Americans be Worried?** - Published in SAGE Journals, this study discusses the inconsistent results of measures taken by government agencies and cruise lines to manage norovirus outbreaks. It suggests that current precautions may not be sufficient to prevent outbreaks⁴.
      3. **Cruise Ship Virus: Norovirus Symptoms and Prevention** - This article from Cruiseline.com mentions that while good hand hygiene is crucial, studies have shown that hand sanitizers are not effective against noroviruses, indicating a gap in the current preventive strategies³.
These sources suggest that while there are measures in place to prevent norovirus outbreaks, their effectiveness can be limited due to the over crowded and lack of enforcement of those procedures.,

On my first cruise to the Caribbean (2008), I became ill after the first port stop which was St. Thomas. It was a virus that lasted about two days. I didn't see the doctor on board but I think the medical department was busy because on the next two port stops there were ambulances waiting when we docked. There was also a patient on a gurney with an IV waiting to be transferred to a hospital when we arrived back in Miami. I contacted Carnival by mail because I knew that many people on the ship were sick as told to me by our cabin steward. Carnival replied but admitted no knowledge of illness aboard the ship. They did offer a "gift" on our next sailing. I didn't ask or expect anything from them other than a response.

Should the Titanic have avoided icebergs once it has already hit one and is sinking?
I believe the cruise lines should be aware of outbreaks and take additional precautions BEFORE they have hundreds of passengers who are sick.

Suing a cruise line for failure to keep their ship clean especially when the illnesses are happening on a subsequent cruise seems okay to me. They had issues on two ships this year with Nora virus weeks before they told any passengers, I was on one two weeks before with staff issues and passengers getting ill, cleaning was not stepped up. No changes in the buffet, they were boarded by the health authorities due to the numbers of complaints from passengers when they returned home.

It is the chance you take, when you go on a cruise. I got norovirus on a cruise and was in my cabin for 3 days.
All cruise lines need to SERVE the passengers, so no one touches the serving tools.
They also need to have crew in the restrooms to make sure people wash their hands.
I do not understand why the cruise lines do not do these simple steps. It would save so much time and money and keep the passengers safer.

Crew should serve food. People should not touch the spoons, forks or tongs. I’ve witness people cough and sneeze into their hands then reach for the serving utensils. A filthy, dirty habit. I’ve witnessed kids aline at the buffet picking up food with their hands then putting the food back. If crew serve the food, they also cut down on the extreme waste by some people.

Don, you have mentioned in a previous video that ships are inspected (I can’t remember if it’s annually, semi- or biannually) for health code violations and the results published. I would look at the ship’s inspection reports before and after a cruise on which I became SEVERELY ill. If the ship has consistently received poor ratings then I might consider suing. On the other hand, if the ship has consistently achieved high marks for hygiene and food safety from professional inspectors, THEN I would accept that the cruise line and crew had done

I guess you should have asked for cruise credit on that Brazil cruise. They aren't keeping up with their cleanliness standards, and you got ill. Yes, they do sue restaurants. Management goes to special classes to learn how to keep things in tip top shape. You must have insurance in case people do sue because you were negligent in clean up. If the cruise company didn't offer another cruise or money back, the people have a right to sue. It's up to the judge if they get compensation now. I don't agree that it's like a hurricane. If cruise companies are finding they have Norovirus outbreaks then they need to change their cleanliness standards. Maybe suing will get them to take better measures?

Totally agree. These companies don’t want to take the extra time and money that it takes to keep their passengers safe by keeping things sanitary so if they won’t do it voluntarily…..well, maybe now they’ll be forced to do the right things.

HOORAY!!! FINALLY cruise lines are being held accountable for their deliberate indifference regarding health and safety issues. Rather than DEMAND hand washing at the point of entry to the food areas, cruise lines turn a blind eye. They allow people to pick up items at the buffet by hand, and then put it back! During Covid, staff served the items from the buffet cafeteria style!
Hope all cruise lines face these legal challenges, and that they are required to reimburse the cost of the cruise, medical fees, fees associated with being unable to travel, AND PUNITIVE PUNISHMENT costs.
This legal action, hopefully, will to reducing what has become ubiquitous on cruise lines! 🎉

We actually EXPECTED to get sick with something on our cruise in May. Just got a "cold" virus (tested negative for Covid). Felt pretty blessed not to get something worse. Wherever you go (church included) you can catch something because people go out and about when they are sick. Suing never enters my mind. It's just life.

Re the Titanic comments. If you can show that the captain ignored iceberg warnings, and that the Marconi employees did not transmit the message from the California that they had to stop due to too many icebergs, then yes, you could sue for negligence and all the diamonds and paintings you had as luggage. Question is whether one would sue White Star or Marconi.
