  • There are a lot of tips out there about cruising... but I'll bet that what I'm about to share will be some of the most unusual you've heard about making your cruise better. But after taking dozens of cruises, they are all things I think many people will want to know, even if they are a little strange, little-known or just offbeat.

I once worked in a Verizon call center. Every day I would get very angry calls from Cruisers that had returned home to get a thousand dollars or more phone bill. AIRPLANE MODE is your Friend!! All of you Cruise blogs should have that in every episode.

Now Verizon never gave me a problem on a cruise but I switched to AT&T a couple of years ago. Went on a cruise last year in 2022, got home and my next bill was $650.00!!! I should have called AT&T and asked their police but I was used to Verizon and thought nah I’ll be ok.

Last cruise I was on, (2005) we got hit with bad weather and I got sea sick. Our server brought me bowls of broth and packets of crackers when I refused to order food. When I left my hubby to finish his meal so I could go lay down the server called someone to meet me at my room with more crackers and a couple bottles of water.

I always take a few cans of Spite or 7Up for sea sickness or nausea. If you drink it hot, it gives swift relief. I was sea sick on our last cruise and hot Sprite helped right away. Staff couldn’t heat it up for me so I had to use the blow dryer on the can.

One of the things we enjoy on our cruises is an intimate dinner, just the 2 of us. We find that if you can get the head waiter to assign you a table for 2 at one of the 2 dining times, you will have the same wait staff each night. They become friendly and attentive as they wait on you. We always tip our waiter well at the evening of the next to the last night. And we tip at the beginning of our cruise. This goes a long way to a pleasant dining experience.

Ladies, if you feel as tho your period may come on during the cruise, make sure you bring PLENTY of supplies especially if you’re heavy the first two-three days. Not only are they expensive on the ship, but they only supply light day ones and off the ship depending on where you port at.. It will be hard to find them also. Speaking from experience.

Also, and this is a bit more invasive, but If you’re aware that your cycle will start prior to the cruise you can ask your doctor for pure progesterone. I keep really good track of my cycle. So one year I knew it would ruin my trip. Progesterone worked like a charm. It postponed my cycle and when i stopped taking it my cycle came the next day. If you live in Europe, this is more commonly done as the drug is available basically over the counter.

    • @pf4773
      @pf4773 Před 4 měsíci +2

Ships count on passengers drinking a lot (buying drink packages that are incredibly expensive) or frequently going to the bar and buying the drinks without the package, and then forgetting how many they ordered. They do NOT give you a receipt unless you ask so you have no proof. And who is good about saving their tiny receipts on a cruise?! The best way to handle a cruise is to NOT charge much while on the ship!

    - Private balconies on cruises are not as private as they may seem, with low dividers and reflective glass walls allowing neighbors to see what's happening.
    - Be mindful of personal belongings and hide any items you don't want the cabin steward to find.
    - Sneaking alcohol onto a cruise ship is common but may result in confiscation; using collapsible Rum Runner pouches can be effective for discreetly bringing alcohol onboard.
    - Meetups for various groups, such as LGBTQ individuals or those battling alcohol addiction, are organized on many cruises and can be found in the daily planner.
    - Pack warm clothing even for tropical destinations, as sudden rainstorms or cool evenings on fast-moving ships can make it chilly.
In cruise ship restaurants, the menu can be seen as a suggestion, and guests can request dishes not on the daily menu or order multiple appetizers if desired.
    - Hanging a shoe organizer over the bathroom door provides convenient storage for small items and prevents clutter.
    - Cruise ship casinos offer unusual games like coin pushers and skill cranes, but remember that these games involve luck and are programmed accordingly.
    - Familiarize yourself with health and crime statistics on cruise ships through resources such as the CDC's vessel sanitation program and the U.S. Department of Transportation's reports.
    - Disembarking the ship can be a time-consuming process, but if you have all your belongings, you can leave whenever you want, regardless of the deck you're on.
    - Engaging in inappropriate relationships with crew members is prohibited and can lead to serious consequences.
    - Security cameras are present throughout the ship's public areas to enhance safety and prevent misconduct.
    - Marijuana and CBD products are generally prohibited on cruise ships, even if they are legal in certain states or have medicinal purposes.
    - Monitor your onboard account throughout the cruise using the cruise line's app to ensure all charges are accurate, and report any errors to Guest Services for resolution.

We paid corkage fees for wine we had to drink (and usually share the remainder of the bottle with wait and kitchen staff) and they kept the case we were gifting until we arrived at port. It was less expensive than getting good wine on board and we had good stuff. We each bought one cocktail on formal night.

Keep you receipts and check daily to make sure you have not been overcharged. Sort out A.S.A.P. Don’t wait till end of cruise at customer service will be slammed. You can also pay your bill with any left over currency (check what currency ship will take) but do before last night on board.

When it comes to drugs, be extremely careful in foreign ports as well, asking the local cabbie for the best place to stash is likely to land you in jail while your ship leaves port! Also, the whole ship will be "arrested" (detained) if discovered a passenger did this and made it back ( happened to me once in Jamaica)

I had received room service then shoved the door thinking it closed. However, us girls woke up the next morning to find it still cracked open. 😮Luckily we were safe. I love the tip about the food. We new this one and ordered multiple of the same appetizers and deserts and love that room service is FREE!

One thing we've found on multiple ships is that ordering 'off menu' is hit or miss. Recently, we wanted something off menu and our waiter told us they could get it the next day. We also asked about other things off menu and were given a hard 'sorry, no'. On the other hand, on one cruise (pre-shutdown), I didn't see anything on the menu that was appetizing and our waiter said 'let me bring you something' which wound up being one of the best meals I had on that trip. Additionally, with all of the changes that have been going on in the cruise space over the last few months, it seems like you may or may not get charged for a second entree if that's your thing, YMMV.

Every time, they tell him they have to bring the entire plate (it’s an assembly line system, after all). But maybe on the premium or luxury lines they would have the time and manpower to make it happen. I will say that DCL was by far the most flexible. Novel warning: I got caught sneaking booze along with a friend/roommate. We both had our own cabins with our girlfriends so 4 guests, two cabins. About 2-3 months before we sailed we all started drinking nothing but box wine. We saved the bladders, washed them out and backfilled them with various liquors to sneak on. The bags had no metal and an easy use spout, essentially they were perfect. We rolled them with towels, jeans, hoodies and anywhere we could think. Both of our bags were flagged and we had to go to the “naughty room” which was a hallway converted into a staging area with all the other passengers and their confiscated bags. You had to open the bag in front of the security staff and everyone in line could see. While in line we saw multiple guests with 1 or 2 full liquor bottles and others with 1 or 2 rum runner bags. We were up next. They opened our bags, and started unrolling clothes and discovering the bladders. After the 3rd and 4th bladders we could hear giggling and gasps from those waiting and watching behind us as the they removed our contraband, bag after bag after bag after bag. They pulled 6 bladders from my bag and 6 bladders from my friends bag. Since the liquor wasn’t in its original bottles they would not hold it for us and threw it in the trash. Both of our girlfriends had brought the same amount of liquor in wine bags in their luggage and never got caught. The plan was to bring enough in each bag that if only one bag got through we would still have a decent amount to drink. It worked. It honestly wasn’t worth the work of messing with the wine bladders and we’ve been buying a drink package for the last 10 or so cruises. Please don’t do the mouthwash bottle trick. The staff knows about it and even if it works, no matter what you do you will never get rid of the mouthwash taste.
